    Mapping and classification of ecologically sensitive marine habitats using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery and object-based image analysis (OBIA)

    Nowadays, emerging technologies, such as long-range transmitters, increasingly miniaturized components for positioning, and enhanced imaging sensors, have led to an upsurge in the availability of new ecological applications for remote sensing based on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), sometimes referred to as “drones”. In fact, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry coupled with imagery acquired by UAVs offers a rapid and inexpensive tool to produce high-resolution orthomosaics, giving ecologists a new way for responsive, timely, and cost-effective monitoring of ecological processes. Here, we adopted a lightweight quadcopter as an aerial survey tool and object-based image analysis (OBIA) workflow to demonstrate the strength of such methods in producing very high spatial resolution maps of sensitive marine habitats. Therefore, three different coastal environments were mapped using the autonomous flight capability of a lightweight UAV equipped with a fully stabilized consumer-grade RGB digital camera. In particular we investigated a Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadow, a rocky coast with nurseries for juvenile fish, and two sandy areas showing biogenic reefs of Sabelleria alveolata. We adopted, for the first time, UAV-based raster thematic maps of these key coastal habitats, produced after OBIA classification, as a new method for fine-scale, low-cost, and time saving characterization of sensitive marine environments which may lead to a more effective and efficient monitoring and management of natural resource

    Comparison of pixel-based and object-based image classification techniques in extracting information from UAV imagery data

As the rapid development is being focused in the urban area, there is a need for the utilisation of a rapid system for updating this profile immediately. One of the current technologies being applied in recent years is the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for mapping purposes. The use of UAV is widespread in various fields because it is low cost, has high resolution and is able to fly at low altitude without the constraints of cloudy weather. Typically, the method of data extraction for UAV in Malaysia is still very limited and the traditional methods are still being implemented by some industries. The features from aerial photo orthomosaic are manually detected and digitised from visual interpretation for the mapping purposes. Unfortunately, these methods are tedious, expensive, consume much time, and may involve much fieldwork, to acquire only a limited information. Pixel-based technique is often used to extract low level features where the image is classified according to the spectral information where the pixels in the overlapping region will be misclassified due to the confusion among the classes. The supervised object-based image analysis (OBIA) classification technique is widely used nowadays for automatic data extraction. Therefore, the general objective of this study is to assess the capability of UAV with high resolution data for image classifications. The pixel-based and OBIA classifications were compared using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The classifications were assessed using different numbers of sample size. The result shows that OBIA gives a better result of Overall Accuracy (OA) than pixel-based. The consequences of this study accommodate further understanding and additional insight of utilising OBIA technique with different classifiers for the extended study

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for monitoring soil erosion in Morocco

    This article presents an environmental remote sensing application using a UAV that is specifically aimed at reducing the data gap between field scale and satellite scale in soil erosion monitoring in Morocco. A fixed-wing aircraft type Sirius I (MAVinci, Germany) equipped with a digital system camera (Panasonic) is employed. UAV surveys are conducted over different study sites with varying extents and flying heights in order to provide both very high resolution site-specific data and lower-resolution overviews, thus fully exploiting the large potential of the chosen UAV for multi-scale mapping purposes. Depending on the scale and area coverage, two different approaches for georeferencing are used, based on high-precision GCPs or the UAV’s log file with exterior orientation values respectively. The photogrammetric image processing enables the creation of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and ortho-image mosaics with very high resolution on a sub-decimetre level. The created data products were used for quantifying gully and badland erosion in 2D and 3D as well as for the analysis of the surrounding areas and landscape development for larger extents

    The potential of small unmanned aircraft systems and structure-from-motion for topographic surveys: a test of emerging integrated approaches at Cwm Idwal, North Wales

Due to the diverse range of survey configurations available and the infancy of these new methods, further research is required. Here, the accuracy, precision and potential applications of this approach are investigated. A total of 543 images of the Cwm Idwal moraine–mound complex were captured from a light (b5 kg) semi-autonomous multi-rotor unmanned aircraft system using a consumer-grade 18 MP compact digital camera. The imageswere used to produce a DSM(digital surfacemodel) of themoraines. The DSMis in good agreement with 7761 total station survey points providing a total verticalRMSE value of 0.517mand verticalRMSE values as lowas 0.200mfor less densely vegetated areas of the DSM. High-precision topographic data can be acquired rapidly using this technique with the resulting DSMs and orthorectified aerial imagery at sub-decimetre resolutions. Positional errors on the total station dataset, vegetation and steep terrain are identified as the causes of vertical disagreement. Whilst this aerial survey approach is advocated for use in a range of geomorphological settings, care must be taken to ensure that adequate ground control is applied to give a high degree of accuracy

    Low-Altitude UAV Imaging Accurately Quantifies Eelgrass Wasting Disease From Alaska to California

    Declines in eelgrass, an important and widespread coastal habitat, are associated with wasting disease in recent outbreaks on the Pacific coast of North America. This study presents a novel method for mapping and predicting wasting disease using Unoccupied Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with low-altitude autonomous imaging of visible bands. We conducted UAV mapping and sampling in intertidal eelgrass beds across multiple sites in Alaska, British Columbia, and California. We designed and implemented a UAV low-altitude mapping protocol to detect disease prevalence and validated against in situ results. Our analysis revealed that green leaf area index derived from UAV imagery was a strong and significant (inverse) predictor of spatial distribution and severity of wasting disease measured on the ground, especially for regions with extensive disease infection. This study highlights a novel, efficient, and portable method to investigate seagrass disease at landscape scales across geographic regions and conditions

    Analysis of Unmanned Aerial System-Based CIR Images in Forestry—A New Perspective to Monitor Pest Infestation Levels

    The detection of pest infestation is an important aspect of forest management. In the case of the oak splendour beetle (Agrilus biguttatus) infestation, the affected oaks (Quercus sp.) show high levels of defoliation and altered canopy reflection signature. These critical features can be identified in high-resolution colour infrared (CIR) images of the tree crown and branches level captured by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). In this study, we used a small UAS equipped with a compact digital camera which has been calibrated and modified to record not only the visual but also the near infrared reflection (NIR) of possibly infested oaks. The flight campaigns were realized in August 2013, covering two study sites which are located in a rural area in western Germany. Both locations represent small-scale, privately managed commercial forests in which oaks are economically valuable species. Our workflow includes the CIR/NIR image acquisition, mosaicking, georeferencing and pixel-based image enhancement followed by object-based image classification techniques. A modified Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVImod) derived classification was used to distinguish between five vegetation health classes, i.e., infested, healthy or dead branches, other vegetation and canopy gaps. We achieved an overall Kappa Index of Agreement (KIA) of 0.81 and 0.77 for each study site, respectively. This approach offers a low-cost alternative to private forest owners who pursue a sustainable management strategy

    Uncertainty of Object-Based Image Analysis for Drone Survey Images

    With the recent developments in the acquisition of images using drone systems, object-based image analysis (OBIA) is widely applied to such high-resolution images. Therefore, it is expected that the application of drone survey images would benefit from studying the uncertainty of OBIA. The most important source of uncertainty is image segmentation, which could significantly affect the accuracy at each stage of OBIA. Therefore, the trans-scale sensitivity of several spatial autocorrelation measures optimizing the segmentation was investigated, including the intrasegment variance of the regions, Moran’s I autocorrelation index, and Geary’s C autocorrelation index. Subsequently, a top-down decomposition scheme was presented to optimize the segmented objects derived from multiresolution segmentation (MRS), and its potential was examined using a drone survey image. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed strategy is able to effectively improve the segmentation of drone survey images of urban areas or highly consistent areas

    Images from unmanned aircraft systems for surveying aquatic and riparian vegetation

    Aquatic and riparian vegetation in lakes, streams, and wetlands has important ecological and regulatory functions and should be monitored to detect ecosystem changes. Field surveys are often tedious and in countries with numerous lakes and streams a nationwide assessment is difficult to achieve. Remote sensing with unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) provides aerial images with high spatial resolution and offers a potential data source for detailed vegetation surveys. The overall objective of this thesis was to evaluate the potential of sub-decimetre resolution true-colour digital images acquired with a UAS for surveying non-submerged (i.e., floating-leaved and emergent) aquatic and riparian vegetation at a high level of thematic detail. At two streams and three lakes in northern Sweden we applied several image analysis methods: Visual interpretation, manual mapping, manual mapping in combination with GPS-based field surveys, and automated object-based image analysis and classification of both 2D images and 3D point data. The UAS-images allowed for high taxonomic resolution, mostly at the species level, with high taxa identification accuracy (>80%) also in mixed-taxa stands. UAS-images in combination with ground-based vegetation surveys allowed for the extrapolation of field sampling results, like biomass measurement, to areas larger than the sampled sites. In automatically produced vegetation maps some fine-scale information detectable with visual interpretation was lost, but time-efficiency increased which is important when larger areas need to be covered. Based on spectral and textural features and height data the automated classification accuracy of non-submerged aquatic vegetation was ~80% for all test sites at the growth-form level and for four out of five test sites at the dominant-taxon level. The results indicate good potential of UAS-images for operative mapping and monitoring of aquatic, riparian, and wetland vegetation. More case studies are needed to fully assess the added value of UAS-technology in terms of invested labour and costs compared to other survey methods. Especially the rapid technical development of multi- and hyperspectral lightweight sensors needs to be taken into account
