Style Separation and Synthesis via Generative Adversarial Networks
Style synthesis attracts great interests recently, while few works focus on
its dual problem "style separation". In this paper, we propose the Style
Separation and Synthesis Generative Adversarial Network (S3-GAN) to
simultaneously implement style separation and style synthesis on object
photographs of specific categories. Based on the assumption that the object
photographs lie on a manifold, and the contents and styles are independent, we
employ S3-GAN to build mappings between the manifold and a latent vector space
for separating and synthesizing the contents and styles. The S3-GAN consists of
an encoder network, a generator network, and an adversarial network. The
encoder network performs style separation by mapping an object photograph to a
latent vector. Two halves of the latent vector represent the content and style,
respectively. The generator network performs style synthesis by taking a
concatenated vector as input. The concatenated vector contains the style half
vector of the style target image and the content half vector of the content
target image. Once obtaining the images from the generator network, an
adversarial network is imposed to generate more photo-realistic images.
Experiments on CelebA and UT Zappos 50K datasets demonstrate that the S3-GAN
has the capacity of style separation and synthesis simultaneously, and could
capture various styles in a single model
Exploring the structure of a real-time, arbitrary neural artistic stylization network
In this paper, we present a method which combines the flexibility of the
neural algorithm of artistic style with the speed of fast style transfer
networks to allow real-time stylization using any content/style image pair. We
build upon recent work leveraging conditional instance normalization for
multi-style transfer networks by learning to predict the conditional instance
normalization parameters directly from a style image. The model is successfully
trained on a corpus of roughly 80,000 paintings and is able to generalize to
paintings previously unobserved. We demonstrate that the learned embedding
space is smooth and contains a rich structure and organizes semantic

Single-picture reconstruction and rendering of trees for plausible vegetation synthesis
State-of-the-art approaches for tree reconstruction either put limiting constraints on the input side (requiring multiple photographs, a scanned point cloud or intensive user input) or provide a representation only suitable for front views of the tree. In this paper we present a complete pipeline for synthesizing and rendering detailed trees from a single photograph with minimal user effort. Since the overall shape and appearance of each tree is recovered from a single photograph of the tree crown, artists can benefit from georeferenced images to populate landscapes with native tree species. A key element of our approach is a compact representation of dense tree crowns through a radial distance map. Our first contribution is an automatic algorithm for generating such representations from a single exemplar image of a tree. We create a rough estimate of the crown shape by solving a thin-plate energy minimization problem, and then add detail through a simplified shape-from-shading approach. The use of seamless texture synthesis results in an image-based representation that can be rendered from arbitrary view directions at different levels of detail. Distant trees benefit from an output-sensitive algorithm inspired on relief mapping. For close-up trees we use a billboard cloud where leaflets are distributed inside the crown shape through a space colonization algorithm. In both cases our representation ensures efficient preservation of the crown shape. Major benefits of our approach include: it recovers the overall shape from a single tree image, involves no tree modeling knowledge and minimal authoring effort, and the associated image-based representation is easy to compress and thus suitable for network streaming.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
A Generative Model of Natural Texture Surrogates
Natural images can be viewed as patchworks of different textures, where the
local image statistics is roughly stationary within a small neighborhood but
otherwise varies from region to region. In order to model this variability, we
first applied the parametric texture algorithm of Portilla and Simoncelli to
image patches of 64X64 pixels in a large database of natural images such that
each image patch is then described by 655 texture parameters which specify
certain statistics, such as variances and covariances of wavelet coefficients
or coefficient magnitudes within that patch.
To model the statistics of these texture parameters, we then developed
suitable nonlinear transformations of the parameters that allowed us to fit
their joint statistics with a multivariate Gaussian distribution. We find that
the first 200 principal components contain more than 99% of the variance and
are sufficient to generate textures that are perceptually extremely close to
those generated with all 655 components. We demonstrate the usefulness of the
model in several ways: (1) We sample ensembles of texture patches that can be
directly compared to samples of patches from the natural image database and can
to a high degree reproduce their perceptual appearance. (2) We further
developed an image compression algorithm which generates surprisingly accurate
images at bit rates as low as 0.14 bits/pixel. Finally, (3) We demonstrate how
our approach can be used for an efficient and objective evaluation of samples
