Cataloged from PDF version of article. The interest for multimedia database management systems has grown rapidly due to the need for the storage of huge volumes of multimedia data in computer systems. An important building block of a multimedia database system is the query processor, and a query optimizer embedded to the query processor is needed to answer user queries efficiently. Query optimization problem has been widely studied for conventional database systems; however it is a new research area for multimedia database systems. Due to the differences in query processing strategies, query optimization techniques used in multimedia database systems are different from those used in traditional databases. In this paper, a query optimization strategy is proposed for processing spatio-temporal queries in video database systems. The proposed strategy includes reordering algorithms to be applied on query execution tree. The performance results obtained by testing the reordering algorithms on different query sets are also presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Inventory management manually inhibit the performance of institutions. This research was aimed at developing a multimedia-based inventory information system program that can meet users\u27 specific needs. The information system program was developed on multimedia basis to produce output of inventory data in the form of 3D texts and visuals that are accessible online to multi users. The development research adopted the SLDC method. Initially, the program was developed using XAMPP as the local web server that includes Apache Web Server, PHP Script Language, MySQL Database, and phpMyAdmin Database Manager.Data were collected through observation, interviews and document study of educational institutions and public institutions. The program\u27s feasibility was tested by Stub Testing, Unit Testing, Black Box Testing, and White Box Testing, as well as Integration Testing. Its execution includes access modules with system login as the main access gate. The program database scheme includes (1) System Login, (2) Menu Manager,(3) Data Entry, (4) Circulation or Transaction, (5) Maintenance, and (6) Report. The information system model is capable of presenting information in the form of texts or images, and the data input uses the barcode system. The system provides access to a menu of top-down and bottom-up to facilitate the use and meet the specific needs and complete. The system was designed as an open source program, so it is open to development for studio or workshopand library information system

Dari hasil pengujian, didapatkan perbedaan performansi yang cukup dignifikan dari file system databaseKata Kunci : Multimedia database, performansiABSTRACT: Nowadays, in information era, the development of multimedia is increasing rapidly. The data exchange which happen not only just structured data, but also unstructured dat such as multimedia data. Therefore, we need a storage that can manage easily and guarantee data integration. Multimedia database is one of storage media that we hope can guarantee factors mentioned above, but the multimedia database has limitations that can influence performance of proccess read and write that file. Because in teoriticly, the proccess read and write into application layer is longer than file system layer so that can decrease the performance In this final project, the performance of multimedia database will be analyzed in response time, throughput, and some superior features. From testing result, the difference of performance of multimedia database is quite significant from file system database.Keyword: Multimedia database, performanc

Two research contributions in 64-bit computing: Testing and Applications

Following the release of Windows 64-bit and Redhat Linux 64-bit operating systems (OS) in late April 2005, this is the one of the first 64-bit OS research project completed in a British university. The objective is to investigate (1) the increase/decrease in performance compared to 32-bit computing; (2) the techniques used to develop 64-bit applications; and (3) how 64-bit computing should be used in IT and research organizations to improve their work. This paper summarizes research discoveries for this investigation, including two major research contributions in (1) testing and (2) application development. The first contribution includes performance, stress, application, multiplatform, JDK and compatibility testing for AMD and Intel models. Comprehensive testing results reveal that 64-bit computing has a better performance in application performance, system performance and stress testing, but a worse performance in compatibility testing than the traditional 32-bit computing. A 64-bit dual-core processor has been tested and the results show that it performs better than a 64-bit single-core processor, but only in application that requires very high demands of CPU and memory consumption. The second contribution is .NET 1.1 64-bit implementations. Without additional troubleshooting, .NET 1.1 does not work on 64-bit Windows operating systems in stable ways. After stabilizing .NET environment, the next step is the application development, which is a dynamic repository with functions such as registration, download, login-logout, product submissions, database storage and statistical reports. The technology is based on Visual Studio .NET 2003, .NET 1.1 Framework with Service Pack 1, SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4 and IIS Server 6.0 on the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 platform with Service Pack 1

Improving performance of content based image retrieval system with color features

Content based image retrieval (CBIR) encompasses a variety of techniques with a goal to solve the problem of searching for digital images in a large database by their visual content. Applications where the retrieval of similar images plays a crucial role include personal photo and art collections, medical imaging, multimedia publications and video surveillance. Main objective of our study was to try to improve the performance of the query-by-example image retrieval system based on texture features – Gabor wavelet and wavelet transform – by augmenting it with color information about the images, in particular color histogram, color autocorrelogram and color moments. Wang image database comprising 1000 natural color images grouped into 10 categories with 100 images was used for testing individual algorithms. Each image in the database served as a query image and the retrieval performance was evaluated by means of the precision and recall. e number of retrieved images ranged from 10 to 80. e best CBIR performance was obtained when implementing a combination of all 190 texture- and color features. Only slightly worse were the average precision and recall for the texture- and color histogram-based system. is result was somewhat surprising, since color histogram features provide no color spatial informa- tion. We observed a 23% increase in average precision when comparing the system containing a combination of texture- and all color features with the one consisting of exclusively texture descriptors when using Euclidean distance measure and 20 retrieved images. Addition of the color autocorrelogram features to the texture de- scriptors had virtually no e ect on the performance, while only minor improvement was detected when adding rst two color moments – the mean and the standard deviation. Similar to what was found in the previous studies with the same image database, average precision was very high in case of dinosaurs and owers and very low with beach, food, monuments and mountains images
