Testing Resource Description and Access (RDA) with Dublin Core

Resource Description and Access (RDA) is a new standard for describing all types of resources. Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign evaluated the guidelines by means of the Dublin Core element set during the U.S. National Libraries RDA Test, held from October to December 2010. This paper speaks to the issues which emerged during the test and what each institution did to address them. Applying RDA to digital resources metadata

This presentation will describe how Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been applied in cataloging, updating, and migrating digital resources at the University of Central Florida Libraries. Presenters will explain the similarities and differences of using RDA to catalog traditional serials in an Integrated Library System (ILS) and digitized serials and serial analytics in a Content Management System (CMS). Examples will be used to illustrate the issues of using RDA in conjunction with other metadata standards such as Dublin Core (DC) and Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) to catalog digital resources including digitized newspapers and monographs, such as: relating RDA core elements to the DC and MODS fields; treating analytical description; transcribing newspaper information; applying roles and vocabularies as specified in RDA; exhibiting work, expression, and manifestation relationship; and describing designator relationships. It will also address the typical changes made to convert old records to RDA in migrating them to new systems. This session will help catalogers and metadata librarians react to the changing cataloging rules and apply them in their daily work

Cooperative Cataloging in Academic Libraries: From Mesopotamia to Metadata

This presentation provides a short historical survey of the development of library cataloging in the Western world and includes information on the gradual growth of cooperation among libraries in terms of using shared standardized cataloging rules and classification systems. Contemporary cooperation in cataloging is also covered focusing on cataloging facilitated by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), OhioLINK, and the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) Consortium. Describing Scholarly Works with Dublin Core: A Functional Approach

This article describes the development of the Scholarly Works Application Profile (SWAP)—a Dublin Core application profile for describing scholarly texts. This work provides an active illustration of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) “Singapore Framework” for Application Profiles, presented at the DCMI Conference in 2007, by incorporating the various elements of Application Profile building as defined by this framework—functional requirements, domain model, description set profile, usage guidelines, and data format. These elements build on the foundations laid down by the Dublin Core Abstract Model and utilize a preexisting domain model (FR-BR—Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) in order to support the representation of complex data describing multiple entities and their relationships. The challenges of engaging community acceptance and implementation will be covered, along with other related initiatives to support the growing corpus of scholarly resource types, such as data objects, geographic data, multimedia, and images whose structure and metadata requirements introduce the need for new application profiles. Finally, looking to other initiatives, the article will comment on how Dublin Core relates to the broader scholarly information world, where projects like Object Re-use and Exchange are attempting to better equip repositories to exchange resources

Moving ahead with RDA

A PowerPoint presentation given at the British Columbia Library Association Conference on April 8, 2011. The presentation reviews the progress made toward implementation of RDA, the new cataloguing content standrd for resource description. Early results from the formal testing which took place in the United States are shared. Resources for training are provided and examples of RDA records are discussed
