    An Algebraic Framework for the Real-Time Solution of Inverse Problems on Embedded Systems

    This article presents a new approach to the real-time solution of inverse problems on embedded systems. The class of problems addressed corresponds to ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with generalized linear constraints, whereby the data from an array of sensors forms the forcing function. The solution of the equation is formulated as a least squares (LS) problem with linear constraints. The LS approach makes the method suitable for the explicit solution of inverse problems where the forcing function is perturbed by noise. The algebraic computation is partitioned into a initial preparatory step, which precomputes the matrices required for the run-time computation; and the cyclic run-time computation, which is repeated with each acquisition of sensor data. The cyclic computation consists of a single matrix-vector multiplication, in this manner computation complexity is known a-priori, fulfilling the definition of a real-time computation. Numerical testing of the new method is presented on perturbed as well as unperturbed problems; the results are compared with known analytic solutions and solutions acquired from state-of-the-art implicit solvers. The solution is implemented with model based design and uses only fundamental linear algebra; consequently, this approach supports automatic code generation for deployment on embedded systems. The targeting concept was tested via software- and processor-in-the-loop verification on two systems with different processor architectures. Finally, the method was tested on a laboratory prototype with real measurement data for the monitoring of flexible structures. The problem solved is: the real-time overconstrained reconstruction of a curve from measured gradients.     Artificial Intelligence and Systems Theory: Applied to Cooperative Robots

    This paper describes an approach to the design of a population of cooperative robots based on concepts borrowed from Systems Theory and Artificial Intelligence. The research has been developed under the SocRob project, carried out by the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the Institute for Systems and Robotics - Instituto Superior Tecnico (ISR/IST) in Lisbon. The acronym of the project stands both for "Society of Robots" and "Soccer Robots", the case study where we are testing our population of robots. Designing soccer robots is a very challenging problem, where the robots must act not only to shoot a ball towards the goal, but also to detect and avoid static (walls, stopped robots) and dynamic (moving robots) obstacles. Furthermore, they must cooperate to defeat an opposing team. Our past and current research in soccer robotics includes cooperative sensor fusion for world modeling, object recognition and tracking, robot navigation, multi-robot distributed task planning and coordination, including cooperative reinforcement learning in cooperative and adversarial environments, and behavior-based architectures for real time task execution of cooperating robot teams

    A new generation of real-time systems in the JET tokamak

    Recently a new recipe for developing and deploying real-time systems has become increasingly adopted in the JET tokamak. Powered by the advent of x86 multi-core technology and the reliability of the JET’s well established Real-Time Data Network (RTDN) to handle all real-time I/O, an official Linux vanilla kernel has been demonstrated to be able to provide realtime performance to user-space applications that are required to meet stringent timing constraints. In particular, a careful rearrangement of the Interrupt ReQuests’ (IRQs) affinities together with the kernel’s CPU isolation mechanism allows to obtain either soft or hard real-time behavior depending on the synchronization mechanism adopted. Finally, the Multithreaded Application Real-Time executor (MARTe) framework is used for building applications particularly optimised for exploring multicore architectures. In the past year, four new systems based on this philosophy have been installed and are now part of the JET’s routine operation. The focus of the present work is on the configuration and interconnection of the ingredients that enable these new systems’ real-time capability and on the impact that JET’s distributed real-time architecture has on system engineering requirements, such as algorithm testing and plant commissioning. Details are given about the common real-time configuration and development path of these systems, followed by a brief description of each system together with results regarding their real-time performance. A cycle time jitter analysis of a user-space MARTe based application synchronising over a network is also presented.     Squeeze-and-Excitation SqueezeNext: An Efficient DNN for Hardware Deployment

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Convolution neural network is being used in field of autonomous driving vehicles or driver assistance systems (ADAS), and has achieved great success. Before the convolution neural network, traditional machine learning algorithms helped the driver assistance systems. Currently, there is a great exploration being done in architectures like MobileNet, SqueezeNext & SqueezeNet. It improved the CNN architectures and made it more suitable to implement on real-time embedded systems. This thesis proposes an efficient and a compact CNN to ameliorate the performance of existing CNN architectures. The intuition behind this proposed architecture is to supplant convolution layers with a more sophisticated block module and to develop a compact architecture with a competitive accuracy. Further, explores the bottleneck module and squeezenext basic block structure. The state-of-the-art squeezenext baseline architecture is used as a foundation to recreate and propose a high performance squeezenext architecture. The proposed architecture is further trained on the CIFAR-10 dataset from scratch. All the training and testing results are visualized with live loss and accuracy graphs. Focus of this thesis is to make an adaptable and a flexible model for efficient CNN performance which can perform better with the minimum tradeoff between model accuracy, size, and speed. Having a model size of 0.595MB along with accuracy of 92.60% and with a satisfactory training and validating speed of 9 seconds, this model can be deployed on real-time autonomous system platform such as Bluebox 2.0 by NXP

    Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop Laboratory Testing for Multisensor Sense and Avoid Systems

    This paper focuses on a hardware-in-the-loop facility aimed at real-time testing of architectures and algorithms of multisensor sense and avoid systems. It was developed within a research project aimed at flight demonstration of autonomous non-cooperative collision avoidance for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. In this framework, an optionally piloted Very Light Aircraft was used as experimental platform. The flight system is based on multiple-sensor data integration and it includes a Ka-band radar, four electro-optical sensors, and two dedicated processing units. The laboratory test system was developed with the primary aim of prototype validation before multi-sensor tracking and collision avoidance flight tests. System concept, hardware/software components, and operating modes are described in the paper. The facility has been built with a modular approach including both flight hardware and simulated systems and can work on the basis of experimentally tested or synthetically generated scenarios. Indeed, hybrid operating modes are also foreseen which enable performance assessment also in the case of alternative sensing architectures and flight scenarios that are hardly reproducible during flight tests. Real-time multisensor tracking results based on flight data are reported, which demonstrate reliability of the laboratory simulation while also showing the effectiveness of radar/electro-optical fusion in a non-cooperative collision avoidance architecture

    The next stage of naval electrical engineering system testing at the Power Networks Demonstration Centre

    This paper gives an overview of the Power Hardware in the Loop (PHIL) system, that is now operational at the PNDC (a University of Strathclyde Research Centre), to extend the centres capability for marine electrical system testing. In this paper, the key components of the PHIL system and their corresponding interfaces are presented; representative case studies showing typical applications for the PHIL system at the PNDC are illustrated; and the next stage of future marine power system testing (flywheel energy storage) utilising the PHIL platform is discussed. The objective of this test bed is to: facilitate integration of engineering systems into marine power system platforms; support the development of future electric ships; to de-risk the integration of the next generation of energy weapons and sensors; and to supplement and replace the need for ship demonstrators. This facility development and associated project plan involves a productive mix of industry, academia, UK MoD and US DoD. The two key components of the PHIL test bed are: (1) A Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) system that is capable of simulating marine electrical systems in real time; and (2) A Triphase converter, a uniquely modular solution that can be re-configured for AC and DC output, used as the link between simulation and real hardware under test. The RTDS interface with the Triphase converter system employs fibre communication to issue control commands and receive measurement feedback. The hardware to be tested, connected to the Triphase, is interfaced directly to simulation in real time. In this paper it is demonstrated how a flywheel energy storage device could be directly connected to a simulated ship power system and operated in real time. This test setup would be used to evaluate the interaction between the ship power system and flywheel. This test bed can be reconfigured for long term research and development for a multitude of ship power system solutions. The ship power system is represented in simulation which means it can be modified to represent existing or planned ship architectures. This facilitates testing of hardware planned for retrofit in existing ship power systems; and it allows future ship powers systems to be simulated and interfaced with existing hardware. Both options support reduced cost and life cycle time to develop ship power systems

    Parallel Algorithms for Isolated and Connected Word Recognition

    For years researchers have worked toward finding a way to allow people to talk to machines in the same manner a person communicates to another person. This verbal man to machine interface, called speech recognition, can be grouped into three types: isolated word recognition, connected word recognition, and continuous speech recognition. Isolated word recognizers recognize single words with distinctive pauses before and after them. Continuous speech recognizers recognize speech spoken as one person speaks to another, continuously without pauses. Connected word recognition is an extension of isolated word recognition which recognizes groups of words spoken continuously. A group of words must have distinctive pauses before and after it, and the number of words in a group is limited to some small value (typically less than six). If these types of recognition systems are to be successful in the real world, they must be speaker independent and support a large vocabulary. They also must be able to recognize the speech input accurately and in real time. Currently there is no system which can meet all of these criteria because a vast amount of computations are needed. This report examines the use of parallel processing to reduce the computation time for speech recognition. Two different types of parallel architectures are considered here, the Single Instruction stream - Multiple Data (S1MD) machine and the VLSI processor array. The SIMD machine is chosen for its flexibility, which makes it a good candidate for testing new speech recognition algorithms. The VLSI processor array is selected as being good for a dedicated recognition system because of its simple processors and fixed interconnections. This report involves designing SIMD systems and VLSI processor arrays for both isolated and connected word recognition systems. These architectures are evaluated and contrasted in terms of the number of processors needed, the interprocessor connections required, and the “power” each processor needs to achieve real time recognition. The results show that an SIMD machine using 100 processors, each with an MC68000 processor, can recognize isolated words in real time using a 20 KHz sampling rate and a 1,000 word vocabulary

    Shallow SqueezeNext: An Efficient & Shallow DNN

    CNN has gained great success in many applications but the major design hurdles for deploying CNN on driver assistance systems or ADAS are limited computation, memory resource, and power budget. Recently, there has been greater exploration into small DNN architectures, such as SqueezeNet and SqueezeNext architectures. In this paper, the proposed Shallow SqueezeNext architecture for driver assistance systems achieves better model size with a good model accuracy and speed in comparison to baseline SqueezeNet and SqueezeNext architectures. The proposed architecture is compact, efficient and flexible in terms of model size and accuracy with minimum tradeoffs and less penalty. The proposed Shallow SqueezeNext uses SqueezeNext architecture as its motivation and foundation. The proposed architecture is developed with intention for implementation or deployment on a real-time autonomous system platform and to keep the model size less than 5 MB. Due to its extremely small model size, 0.370 MB with a competitive model accuracy of 82.44 %, decent both training and testing model speed of 7 seconds, it can be successfully deployed on ADAS, driver assistance systems or a real time autonomous system platform such as BlueBox2.0 by NXP. The proposed Shallow SqueezeNext architecture is trained and tested from scratch on CIFAR-10 dataset for developing a dataset specific trained model

    Neural Architectures for Control

    The cerebellar model articulated controller (CMAC) neural architectures are shown to be viable for the purposes of real-time learning and control. Software tools for the exploration of CMAC performance are developed for three hardware platforms, the MacIntosh, the IBM PC, and the SUN workstation. All algorithm development was done using the C programming language. These software tools were then used to implement an adaptive critic neuro-control design that learns in real-time how to back up a trailer truck. The truck backer-upper experiment is a standard performance measure in the neural network literature, but previously the training of the controllers was done off-line. With the CMAC neural architectures, it was possible to train the neuro-controllers on-line in real-time on a MS-DOS PC 386. CMAC neural architectures are also used in conjunction with a hierarchical planning approach to find collision-free paths over 2-D analog valued obstacle fields. The method constructs a coarse resolution version of the original problem and then finds the corresponding coarse optimal path using multipass dynamic programming. CMAC artificial neural architectures are used to estimate the analog transition costs that dynamic programming requires. The CMAC architectures are trained in real-time for each obstacle field presented. The coarse optimal path is then used as a baseline for the construction of a fine scale optimal path through the original obstacle array. These results are a very good indication of the potential power of the neural architectures in control design. In order to reach as wide an audience as possible, we have run a seminar on neuro-control that has met once per week since 20 May 1991. This seminar has thoroughly discussed the CMAC architecture, relevant portions of classical control, back propagation through time, and adaptive critic designs

    Performance Testing of Distributed Component Architectures

    Performance characteristics, such as response time, throughput andscalability, are key quality attributes of distributed applications. Current practice,however, rarely applies systematic techniques to evaluate performance characteristics.We argue that evaluation of performance is particularly crucial in early developmentstages, when important architectural choices are made. At first glance, thiscontradicts the use of testing techniques, which are usually applied towards the endof a project. In this chapter, we assume that many distributed systems are builtwith middleware technologies, such as the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) or theCommon Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). These provide servicesand facilities whose implementations are available when architectures are defined.We also note that it is the middleware functionality, such as transaction and persistenceservices, remote communication primitives and threading policy primitives,that dominates distributed system performance. Drawing on these observations, thischapter presents a novel approach to performance testing of distributed applications.We propose to derive application-specific test cases from architecture designs so thatthe performance of a distributed application can be tested based on the middlewaresoftware at early stages of a development process. We report empirical results thatsupport the viability of the approach
