    Digital Innovations for a Circular Plastic Economy in Africa

    Plastic pollution is one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century that requires innovative and varied solutions. Focusing on sub-Saharan Africa, this book brings together interdisciplinary, multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder perspectives exploring challenges and opportunities for utilising digital innovations to manage and accelerate the transition to a circular plastic economy (CPE). This book is organised into three sections bringing together discussion of environmental conditions, operational dimensions and country case studies of digital transformation towards the circular plastic economy. It explores the environment for digitisation in the circular economy, bringing together perspectives from practitioners in academia, innovation, policy, civil society and government agencies. The book also highlights specific country case studies in relation to the development and implementation of different innovative ideas to drive the circular plastic economy across the three sub-Saharan African regions. Finally, the book interrogates the policy dimensions and practitioner perspectives towards a digitally enabled circular plastic economy. Written for a wide range of readers across academia, policy and practice, including researchers, students, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), digital entrepreneurs, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and multilateral agencies, policymakers and public officials, this book offers unique insights into complex, multilayered issues relating to the production and management of plastic waste and highlights how digital innovations can drive the transition to the circular plastic economy in Africa.     IoT Transmission Technologies for Distributed Measurement Systems in Critical Environments

    Distributed measurement systems are spread in the most diverse application scenarios, and Internet of Things (IoT) transmission equipment is usually the enabling technologies for such measurement systems that need to feature wireless connectivity to ensure pervasiveness. Because wireless measurement systems have been deployed for the last years even in critical environments, assessing transmission technologies performances in such contexts is fundamental. Indeed, they are the most challenging ones for wireless data transmission due to their intrinsic attenuation capabilities. Several scenarios in which measurement systems can be deployed are analysed. Firstly, marine contexts are treated by considering above-the-sea wireless links. Such setting can be experienced in whichever application requiring remote monitoring of facilities and assets that are offshore installed. Some instances are offshore sea farming plants, or remote video monitoring systems installed on seamark buoys. Secondly, wireless communications taking place from the underground to the aboveground are covered. This scenario is typical of precision agriculture applications, where the accurate measurement of underground physical parameters is needed to be remotely sent to optimise crops reducing the wastefulness of fundamental resources (e.g., irrigation water). Thirdly, wireless communications occurring from the underwater to the abovewater are addressed. Such situation is inevitable for all those infrastructures monitoring conservation status of underwater species like algae, seaweeds and reef. Then, wireless links happening traversing metal surfaces and structures are tackled. Such context is commonly encountered in asset tracking and monitoring (e.g., containers), or in smart metering applications (e.g., utility meters). Lastly, sundry harsh environments that are typical of industrial monitoring (e.g., vibrating machineries, harsh temperature and humidity rooms, corrosive atmospheres) are tested to validate pervasive measurement infrastructures even in such contexts that are usually experienced in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. The performances of wireless measurement systems in such scenarios are tested by sorting out ad-hoc measurement campaigns. Finally, IoT measurement infrastructures respectively deployed in above-the-sea and underground-to-aboveground settings are described to provide real applications in which such facilities can be effectively installed. Nonetheless, the aforementioned application scenarios are only some amid their sundry variety. Indeed, nowadays distributed pervasive measurement systems have to be thought in a broad way, resulting in countless instances: predictive maintenance, smart healthcare, smart cities, industrial monitoring, or smart agriculture, etc. This Thesis aims at showing distributed measurement systems in critical environments to set up pervasive monitoring infrastructures that are enabled by IoT transmission technologies. At first, they are presented, and then the harsh environments are introduced, along with the relative theoretical analysis modelling path loss in such conditions. It must be underlined that this Thesis aims neither at finding better path loss models with respect to the existing ones, nor at improving them. Indeed, path loss models are exploited as they are, in order to derive estimates of losses to understand the effectiveness of the deployed infrastructure. In fact, some transmission tests in those contexts are described, along with providing examples of these types of applications in the field, showing the measurement infrastructures and the relative critical environments serving as deployment sites. The scientific relevance of this Thesis is evident since, at the moment, the literature lacks a comparative study like this, showing both transmission performances in critical environments, and the deployment of real IoT distributed wireless measurement systems in such contexts

    Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure

    A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium

    The European Experience: A Multi-Perspective History of Modern Europe, 1500–2000

    The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience.     Managing distributed situation awareness in a team of agents

    The research presented in this thesis investigates the best ways to manage Distributed Situation Awareness (DSA) for a team of agents tasked to conduct search activity with limited resources (battery life, memory use, computational power, etc.). In the first part of the thesis, an algorithm to coordinate agents (e.g., UAVs) is developed. This is based on Delaunay triangulation with the aim of supporting efficient, adaptable, scalable, and predictable search. Results from simulation and physical experiments with UAVs show good performance in terms of resources utilisation, adaptability, scalability, and predictability of the developed method in comparison with the existing fixed-pattern, pseudorandom, and hybrid methods. The second aspect of the thesis employs Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) to define and manage DSA based on the information obtained from the agents' search activity. Algorithms and methods were developed to describe how agents update the BBN to model the system’s DSA, predict plausible future states of the agents’ search area, handle uncertainties, manage agents’ beliefs (based on sensor differences), monitor agents’ interactions, and maintains adaptable BBN for DSA management using structural learning. The evaluation uses environment situation information obtained from agents’ sensors during search activity, and the results proved superior performance over well-known alternative methods in terms of situation prediction accuracy, uncertainty handling, and adaptability. Therefore, the thesis’s main contributions are (i) the development of a simple search planning algorithm that combines the strength of fixed-pattern and pseudorandom methods with resources utilisation, scalability, adaptability, and predictability features; (ii) a formal model of DSA using BBN that can be updated and learnt during the mission; (iii) investigation of the relationship between agents search coordination and DSA management

    The Administrative Turn in Contemporary Art: The Figure of the Arts Administrator — a case study of the Taipei Biennial (1996-2020)

    This PhD uses “the Administrative Turn” to describe the specific, but also the more general, changing nature of the local and global administrative networks which support contemporary art. Through a case study of the figure of the arts administrator at the Taipei Biennial (TB), this research examines these changes in three ways – on (1) changes in institutional principles of arts administration, (2) changes in administrative methodology, and (3) changes in function for arts administrators. Taking a transdisciplinary approach drawing on Arts Management, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies and Art History, this thesis engages critically with the value of “the administrative” as a necessary approach to catalyse a shift in focus away from the highly visible and spectacularised norm of the global contemporary art world, towards the infrastructural significance of the backstage. This change in perspective through the study of the TB arts administrators sets out to present a missing puzzle of what makes that art world functions as it does and how in fact the support network of the contemporary art practices have transformed because of changes in the administrative capacity in terms of its institution, methodology and function. Chapter 1 details the developmental history of the system of arts administration at TB, as an institution situated within a government-backed, museum-based, contemporary art exhibitionary ecosystem, and finds that the institution history and design principles of arts administration are not only a reflection but also an active author of Taiwanese national identity. Chapter 2 demonstrates how arts management and its methodology as a practice-centric tradecraft based on the narrative of professionalism and a stewardship process, is iterative and relies on a balance of control and care. With a close analysis of the administrative capacity, Chapter 3 establishes the figure of the arts administrators as reflexive and its function pedagogical and consultative. This research concludes that acting as critical infrastructure, arts administrators as ascending co-development stewards, possess the transformative agency to radically re-imagine their sphere of practice and re-conceptualise how the support network could better function for a fast-evolving and increasingly multi-stakeholder production reality, which underpins the culture of contemporary art biennials globally

La cuarta revolución industrial trajo consigo la implantación de maquinaria en la mayor parte de procesos industriales, y una fortaleza de estos es su repetitividad. Los robots móviles autónomos, que son los que ofrecen una mayor flexibilidad, carecen de esta capacidad, principalmente debido al ruido inherente a las lecturas ofrecidas por los sensores y al dinamismo existente en la mayoría de entornos. Por este motivo, gran parte de este trabajo se centra en cuantificar el error cometido por los principales métodos de mapeado y localización de robots móviles,ofreciendo distintas alternativas para la mejora del posicionamiento.Asimismo, las principales fuentes de información con las que los robots móviles son capaces de realizarlas funciones descritas son los sensores exteroceptivos, los cuales miden el entorno y no tanto el estado del propio robot. Por esta misma razón, algunos métodos son muy dependientes del escenario en el que se han desarrollado, y no obtienen los mismos resultados cuando este varía. La mayoría de plataformas móviles generan un mapa que representa el entorno que les rodea, y fundamentan en este muchos de sus cálculos para realizar acciones como navegar. Dicha generación es un proceso que requiere de intervención humana en la mayoría de casos y que tiene una gran repercusión en el posterior funcionamiento del robot. En la última parte del presente trabajo, se propone un método que pretende optimizar este paso para así generar un modelo más rico del entorno sin requerir de tiempo adicional para ello

    Rural implementation of connected, autonomous and electric vehicles

    Connected, autonomous and electric vehicles (CAEV) are at the forefront of transport development. They are intended to provide efficient, safe and sustainable transport solutions to solve everyday transport problems including congestion, accidents and pollution. However, despite significant industry and government investment in the technology, little has been done in the way of exploring the implementation of CAEVs in rural scenarios. This thesis investigates the potential for rural road CAEV implementation in the UK. In this work, the rural digital and physical infrastructure requirements for CAEVs were first investigated through physical road-based experimentation of CAEV technologies. Further investigations into the challenges facing the rural implementation of CAEVs were then conducted through qualitative consultations with transport planning professionals. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of these investigations revealed a need for better rural infrastructure, and an overall lack of understanding regarding CAEVs and their rural implementation requirements amongst the transport planning industry. The need for a measurement tool for transport planners was identified, to expose the industry to, and educate them about, CAEVs and their rural potential. As a result, a CAEV Rural Transport Index (CARTI) is proposed as a simple measurement tool to assess the potential for rural CAEV implementation. The CARTI was implemented, and its effectiveness tested, through further consultation with transport planning professionals. The results indicate the potential for the CARTI to be used as a component of decision-making processes at both local authority and national levels. In conclusion, effective rural CAEV implementation relies on transport planners having a strong understanding of rural community transport needs, the solutions CAEV technologies can offer and the supporting infrastructure they require. Further, the CARTI was found to be an effective tool to support the development of this required understanding and recommendations have therefore been made for its future development

    PARAMETRIC APPROACHES TO BALANCE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT AND HUMAN WELLBEING WITHIN URBAN GREEN SPACE

    Through rapid urbanisation, urban green spaces (UGS) have become increasingly limited and valuable in high-density urban environments. However, meeting the diverse requirements of sustainable urban development often leads to conflicts in UGS usage. For example, the presence of stormwater treatment facilities may hinder residents' access to adjacent UGS. Traditional approaches to UGS design typically focus on separate evaluations of human wellbeing and stormwater management. However, using questionnaires, interviews, and surveys for human wellbeing evaluation can be challenging to generalise across different projects and cities. Additionally, professional hydrological models used for stormwater management require extensive knowledge of hydrology and struggle to integrate their 2D evaluation methods with 3D models. To address these challenges, this thesis proposes a novel framework to integrate the two types of analysis within a system for balancing the needs of human wellbeing and stormwater management in UGS design. The framework incorporates criteria and parameters for evaluating human wellbeing and stormwater management in a 3D model and introduces an approach to compare these two needs in terms of UGS area and suitable location. The contributions of this thesis to multi-objective UGS design are as follows: (1) defining human wellbeing evaluation through Accessibility and Usability assessment, which considers factors such as connectivity, walking distance, space enclosure, and space availability; (2) simplifying stormwater evaluation using particle systems and design curves to streamline complex hydrological models; (3) integrating the two evaluations by comparing their quantified requirements for UGS area and location; and (4) incorporating parameters to provide flexibility and accommodate various design scenarios and objectives. The advantages of this evaluation framework are demonstrated through two case studies: (1) the human wellbeing analysis based on spatial parameters in the framework shows sensitivity to site variations, including UGS quantity and distribution, population density, terrain, road context, height of void space, and more; (2) the simplified stormwater analysis effectively captures site variations represented by UGS quantity and distribution, building distribution, as well as terrain, providing recommendations for each UGS with different types and sizes of stormwater facilities. (3) With the features of spatial parameter evaluation, the framework is feasible to adjust relevant thresholds and include more parameters to respond to specific project needs. (4) By quantifying the two different requirements for UGS and comparing them, any UGS with high usage conflicts can be easily identified. By evaluating all proposed criteria for UGSs in the 3D model, designers can conveniently observe simulation and adjust design scenarios to address identified usage conflicts. Thus, the proposed evaluation framework in this thesis would be valuable in effectively supporting further multi-objective UGS design
