    Termhood-based Comparability Metrics of Comparable Corpus in Special Domain

    Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) and machine translation (MT) resources, such as dictionaries and parallel corpora, are scarce and hard to come by for special domains. Besides, these resources are just limited to a few languages, such as English, French, and Spanish and so on. So, obtaining comparable corpora automatically for such domains could be an answer to this problem effectively. Comparable corpora, that the subcorpora are not translations of each other, can be easily obtained from web. Therefore, building and using comparable corpora is often a more feasible option in multilingual information processing. Comparability metrics is one of key issues in the field of building and using comparable corpus. Currently, there is no widely accepted definition or metrics method of corpus comparability. In fact, Different definitions or metrics methods of comparability might be given to suit various tasks about natural language processing. A new comparability, namely, termhood-based metrics, oriented to the task of bilingual terminology extraction, is proposed in this paper. In this method, words are ranked by termhood not frequency, and then the cosine similarities, calculated based on the ranking lists of word termhood, is used as comparability. Experiments results show that termhood-based metrics performs better than traditional frequency-based metrics

    In no uncertain terms : a dataset for monolingual and multilingual automatic term extraction from comparable corpora

    Automatic term extraction is a productive field of research within natural language processing, but it still faces significant obstacles regarding datasets and evaluation, which require manual term annotation. This is an arduous task, made even more difficult by the lack of a clear distinction between terms and general language, which results in low inter-annotator agreement. There is a large need for well-documented, manually validated datasets, especially in the rising field of multilingual term extraction from comparable corpora, which presents a unique new set of challenges. In this paper, a new approach is presented for both monolingual and multilingual term annotation in comparable corpora. The detailed guidelines with different term labels, the domain- and language-independent methodology and the large volumes annotated in three different languages and four different domains make this a rich resource. The resulting datasets are not just suited for evaluation purposes but can also serve as a general source of information about terms and even as training data for supervised methods. Moreover, the gold standard for multilingual term extraction from comparable corpora contains information about term variants and translation equivalents, which allows an in-depth, nuanced evaluation

    Automatic term extraction is a task in the field of natural language processing that aims to automatically identify terminology in collections of specialised, domain-specific texts. Terminology is defined as domain-specific vocabulary and consists of both single-word terms (e.g., corpus in the field of linguistics, referring to a large collection of texts) and multi-word terms (e.g., automatic term extraction). Terminology is a crucial part of specialised communication since terms can concisely express very specific and essential information. Therefore, quickly and automatically identifying terms is useful in a wide range of contexts. Automatic term extraction can be used by language professionals to find which terms are used in a domain and how, based on a relevant corpus. It is also useful for other tasks in natural language processing, including machine translation. One of the main difficulties with term extraction, both manual and automatic, is the vague boundary between general language and terminology. When different people identify terms in the same text, it will invariably produce different results. Consequently, creating manually annotated datasets for term extraction is a costly, time- and effort- consuming task. This can hinder research on automatic term extraction, which requires gold standard data for evaluation, preferably even in multiple languages and domains, since terms are language- and domain-dependent. Moreover, supervised machine learning methodologies rely on annotated training data to automatically deduce the characteristics of terms, so this knowledge can be used to detect terms in other corpora as well. Consequently, the first part of this PhD project was dedicated to the construction and validation of a new dataset for automatic term extraction, called ACTER – Annotated Corpora for Term Extraction Research. Terms and Named Entities were manually identified with four different labels in twelve specialised corpora. The dataset contains corpora in three languages and four domains, leading to a total of more than 100k annotations, made over almost 600k tokens. It was made publicly available during a shared task we organised, in which five international teams competed to automatically extract terms from the same test data. This illustrated how ACTER can contribute towards advancing the state-of-the-art. It also revealed that there is still a lot of room for improvement, with moderate scores even for the best teams. Therefore, the second part of this dissertation was devoted to researching how supervised machine learning techniques might contribute. The traditional, hybrid approach to automatic term extraction relies on a combination of linguistic and statistical clues to detect terms. An initial list of unique candidate terms is extracted based on linguistic information (e.g., part-of-speech patterns) and this list is filtered based on statistical metrics that use frequencies to measure whether a candidate term might be relevant. The result is a ranked list of candidate terms. HAMLET – Hybrid, Adaptable Machine Learning Approach to Extract Terminology – was developed based on this traditional approach and applies machine learning to efficiently combine more information than could be used with a rule-based approach. This makes HAMLET less susceptible to typical issues like low recall on rare terms. While domain and language have a large impact on results, robust performance was reached even without domain- specific training data, and HAMLET compared favourably to a state-of-the-art rule-based system. Building on these findings, the third and final part of the project was dedicated to investigating methodologies that are even further removed from the traditional approach. Instead of starting from an initial list of unique candidate terms, potential terms were labelled immediately in the running text, in their original context. Two sequential labelling approaches were developed, evaluated and compared: a feature- based conditional random fields classifier, and a recurrent neural network with word embeddings. The latter outperformed the feature-based approach and was compared to HAMLET as well, obtaining comparable and even better results. In conclusion, this research resulted in an extensive, reusable dataset and three distinct new methodologies for automatic term extraction. The elaborate evaluations went beyond reporting scores and revealed the strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches. This identified challenges for future research, since some terms, especially ambiguous ones, remain problematic for all systems. However, overall, results were promising and the approaches were complementary, revealing great potential for new methodologies that combine multiple strategies

    Corpora creation in contrastive linguistics (Cтворення корпусів у дослідженнях з зіставного мовознавства)

    Universal and specific features of language usage can become more evident if tested against the non-elicited language data on large scale. This requirement can be met by using corpora that provide ample data to test research hypotheses in contrastive language studies in objective and falsifiable manner. However, criteria in corpora creation and comparability measures in the evaluation of available corpora present a separate problem in contrastive linguistics. The article presents an overview of the types of corpora used in Contrastive Linguistics research and describes their characteristic features. The study proceeds to look into the sources of data used in corpora creation both in (commercially) available corpora and data collections compiled to answer a particular research question. The article describes the techniques used in creating comparable corpora for contrastive studies and presents the comparability measures to evaluate the corpora. The study examines the case of building a topic-specific comparable corpus in English and Ukrainian. The corpus focuses on education-related vocabulary in the languages under analysis. The corpus comparability is measured using translation equivalence and word frequency similarity. The article used the procedures outlined above to collect a quasi-comparable (non-aligned) corpus focusing on the topic of education with the English and Ukrainian languages in contrast. Using frequency comparability measure it was established that both components of the corpus (in the English and Ukrainian languages) contain keywords related to the topic of education. (У статті проаналізовано типи корпусів, які використовуються у дослідженнях з зіставного мовознавства з метою виявлення універсальних та специфічних особливостей мов. Встановлено основні джерела матеріалів для укладання корпусів, критерії відбору текстів, етапи укладання корпусів, моделі оцінки та характеристики корпусів для контрастивних студій. У статті розглянуто методи, що використовуються у створенні корпусів для зіставних досліджень, описано досвід укладання корпусів для зіставних досліджень на матеріалі англійської та української мов. Критерії відбору матеріалу, етапи побудови корпусів та перспектив їх використання розглянуто на прикладі корпусів лексики сфери освіти в аналізованих мовах.

Darbā uzmanība pievērsta ne tikai metodēm terminu integrācijai SMT, bet arī metodēm valodas resursu, kas nepieciešami dažādu uzdevumu veikšanai terminu integrācijas SMT darbplūsmās, ieguvei. Piedāvātās metodes ir novērtētas automātiskas un manuālas novērtēšanas eksperimentos. Iegūtie rezultāti parāda, ka statiskās un dinamiskās integrācijas metodes ļauj būtiski uzlabot tulkošanas kvalitāti. The author presents novel methods for terminology integration in SMT systems during training (through static integration) and during translation (through dynamic integration). The work focusses not only on the SMT integration techniques, but also on methods for acquisition of linguistic resources that are necessary for different tasks involved in workflows for terminology integration in SMT systems. The proposed methods have been evaluated using automatic and manual evaluation methods. The results show that both static and dynamic integration methods allow increasing translation quality.     Statistical analysis of grouped text documents

    L'argomento di questa tesi sono i modelli statistici per l'analisi dei dati testuali, con particolare attenzione ai contesti in cui i campioni di testo sono raggruppati. Quando si ha a che fare con dati testuali, il primo problema è quello di elaborarli, per renderli compatibili dal punto di vista computazionale e metodologico con i metodi matematici e statistici prodotti e continuamente sviluppati dalla comunità scientifica. Per questo motivo, la tesi passa in rassegna i metodi esistenti per la rappresentazione analitica e l'elaborazione di campioni di dati testuali, compresi i "Vector Space Models", le "rappresentazioni distribuite" di parole e documenti e i "contextualized embeddings". Questa rassegna comporta la standardizzazione di una notazione che, anche all'interno dello stesso approccio di rappresentazione, appare molto eterogenea in letteratura. Vengono poi esplorati due domini di applicazione: i social media e il turismo culturale. Per quanto riguarda il primo, viene proposto uno studio sull'autodescrizione di gruppi diversi di individui sulla piattaforma StockTwits, dove i mercati finanziari sono gli argomenti dominanti. La metodologia proposta ha integrato diversi tipi di dati, sia testuali che variabili categoriche. Questo studio ha agevolato la comprensione sul modo in cui le persone si presentano online e ha trovato stutture di comportamento ricorrenti all'interno di gruppi di utenti. Per quanto riguarda il turismo culturale, la tesi approfondisce uno studio condotto nell'ambito del progetto "Data Science for Brescia - Arts and Cultural Places", in cui è stato addestrato un modello linguistico per classificare le recensioni online scritte in italiano in quattro aree semantiche distinte relative alle attrazioni culturali della città di Brescia. Il modello proposto permette di identificare le attrazioni nei documenti di testo, anche quando non sono esplicitamente menzionate nei metadati del documento, aprendo così la possibilità di espandere il database relativo a queste attrazioni culturali con nuove fonti, come piattaforme di social media, forum e altri spazi online. Infine, la tesi presenta uno studio metodologico che esamina la specificità di gruppo delle parole, analizzando diversi stimatori di specificità di gruppo proposti in letteratura. Lo studio ha preso in considerazione documenti testuali raggruppati con variabile di "outcome" e variabile di gruppo. Il suo contributo consiste nella proposta di modellare il corpus di documenti come una distribuzione multivariata, consentendo la simulazione di corpora di documenti di testo con caratteristiche predefinite. La simulazione ha fornito preziose indicazioni sulla relazione tra gruppi di documenti e parole. Inoltre, tutti i risultati possono essere liberamente esplorati attraverso un'applicazione web, i cui componenti sono altresì descritti in questo manoscritto. In conclusione, questa tesi è stata concepita come una raccolta di studi, ognuno dei quali suggerisce percorsi di ricerca futuri per affrontare le sfide dell'analisi dei dati testuali raggruppati.The topic of this thesis is statistical models for the analysis of textual data, emphasizing contexts in which text samples are grouped. When dealing with text data, the first issue is to process it, making it computationally and methodologically compatible with the existing mathematical and statistical methods produced and continually developed by the scientific community. Therefore, the thesis firstly reviews existing methods for analytically representing and processing textual datasets, including Vector Space Models, distributed representations of words and documents, and contextualized embeddings. It realizes this review by standardizing a notation that, even within the same representation approach, appears highly heterogeneous in the literature. Then, two domains of application are explored: social media and cultural tourism. About the former, a study is proposed about self-presentation among diverse groups of individuals on the StockTwits platform, where finance and stock markets are the dominant topics. The methodology proposed integrated various types of data, including textual and categorical data. This study revealed insights into how people present themselves online and found recurring patterns within groups of users. About the latter, the thesis delves into a study conducted as part of the "Data Science for Brescia - Arts and Cultural Places" Project, where a language model was trained to classify Italian-written online reviews into four distinct semantic areas related to cultural attractions in the Italian city of Brescia. The model proposed allows for the identification of attractions in text documents, even when not explicitly mentioned in document metadata, thus opening possibilities for expanding the database related to these cultural attractions with new sources, such as social media platforms, forums, and other online spaces. Lastly, the thesis presents a methodological study examining the group-specificity of words, analyzing various group-specificity estimators proposed in the literature. The study considered grouped text documents with both outcome and group variables. Its contribution consists of the proposal of modeling the corpus of documents as a multivariate distribution, enabling the simulation of corpora of text documents with predefined characteristics. The simulation provided valuable insights into the relationship between groups of documents and words. Furthermore, all its results can be freely explored through a web application, whose components are also described in this manuscript. In conclusion, this thesis has been conceived as a collection of papers. It aimed to contribute to the field with both applications and methodological proposals, and each study presented here suggests paths for future research to address the challenges in the analysis of grouped textual data

    From Texts to Prerequisites. Identifying and Annotating Propaedeutic Relations in Educational Textual Resources

    openPrerequisite Relations (PRs) are dependency relations established between two distinct concepts expressing which piece(s) of information a student has to learn first in order to understand a certain target concept. Such relations are one of the most fundamental in Education, playing a crucial role not only for what concerns new knowledge acquisition, but also in the novel applications of Artificial Intelligence to distant and e-learning. Indeed, resources annotated with such information could be used to develop automatic systems able to acquire and organize the knowledge embodied in educational resources, possibly fostering educational applications personalized, e.g., on students' needs and prior knowledge. The present thesis discusses the issues and challenges of identifying PRs in educational textual materials with the purpose of building a shared understanding of the relation among the research community. To this aim, we present a methodology for dealing with prerequisite relations as established in educational textual resources which aims at providing a systematic approach for uncovering PRs in textual materials, both when manually annotating and automatically extracting the PRs. The fundamental principles of our methodology guided the development of a novel framework for PR identification which comprises three components, each tackling a different task: (i) an annotation protocol (PREAP), reporting the set of guidelines and recommendations for building PR-annotated resources; (ii) an annotation tool (PRET), supporting the creation of manually annotated datasets reflecting the principles of PREAP; (iii) an automatic PR learning method based on machine learning (PREL). The main novelty of our methodology and framework lies in the fact that we propose to uncover PRs from textual resources relying solely on the content of the instructional material: differently from other works, rather than creating de-contextualised PRs, we acknowledge the presence of a PR between two concepts only if emerging from the way they are presented in the text. By doing so, we anchor relations to the text while modelling the knowledge structure entailed in the resource. As an original contribution of this work, we explore whether linguistic complexity of the text influences the task of manual identification of PRs. To this aim, we investigate the interplay between text and content in educational texts through a crowd-sourcing experiment on concept sequencing. Our methodology values the content of educational materials as it incorporates the evidence acquired from such investigation which suggests that PR recognition is highly influenced by the way in which concepts are introduced in the resource and by the complexity of the texts.
