Cyclic proof systems for modal fixpoint logics

    Get PDF
This thesis is about cyclic and ill-founded proof systems for modal fixpoint logics, with and without explicit fixpoint quantifiers.Cyclic and ill-founded proof-theory allow proofs with infinite branches or paths, as long as they satisfy some correctness conditions ensuring the validity of the conclusion. In this dissertation we design a few cyclic and ill-founded systems: a cyclic one for the weak Grzegorczyk modal logic K4Grz, based on our explanation of the phenomenon of cyclic companionship; and ill-founded and cyclic ones for the full computation tree logic CTL* and the intuitionistic linear-time temporal logic iLTL. All systems are cut-free, and the cyclic ones for K4Grz and iLTL have fully finitary correctness conditions.Lastly, we use a cyclic system for the modal mu-calculus to obtain a proof of the uniform interpolation property for the logic which differs from the original, automata-based one

Indeterminacy and the law of the excluded middle

This thesis is an investigation into indeterminacy in the foundations of mathematics and its possible consequences for the applicability of the law of the excluded middle (LEM). It characterises different ways in which the natural numbers as well as the sets may be understood to be indeterminate, and asks in what sense this would cease to support applicability of LEM to reasoning with them. The first part of the thesis reviews the indeterminacy phenomena on which the argument is based and argues for a distinction between two notions of indeterminacy: a) indeterminacy as applied to domains and b) indefiniteness as applied to concepts. It then addresses possible attempts to secure determinacy in both cases. The second part of the thesis discusses the advantages that an argument from indeterminacy has over traditional intuitionistic arguments against LEM, and it provides the framework in which conditions for the applicability of LEM can be explicated in the setting of indeterminacy. The final part of the thesis then applies these findings to concrete cases of indeterminacy. With respect to indeterminacy of domains, I note some problems for establishing a rejection of LEM based on the indeterminacy of the height of the set theoretic hierarchy. I show that a coherent argument can be made for the rejection of LEM based on the indeterminacy of its width, and assess its philosophical commitments. A final chapter addresses the notion of indefiniteness of our concepts of set and number and asks how this might affect the applicability of LEM

Epistemic Logics of Structured Intensional Groups

Epistemic logics of intensional groups lift the assumption that membership in a group of agents is common knowledge. Instead of being represented directly as a set of agents, intensional groups are represented by a property that may change its extension from world to world. Several authors have considered versions of the intensional group framework where group-specifying properties are articulated using structured terms of a language, such as the language of Boolean algebras or of description logic. In this paper we formulate a general semantic framework for epistemic logics of structured intensional groups, develop the basic theory leading to completeness-via-canonicity results, and show that several frameworks presented in the literature correspond to special cases of the general framework.Comment: In Proceedings TARK 2023, arXiv:2307.0400

    Rethinking inconsistent mathematics

    Get PDF
This dissertation has two main goals. The first is to provide a practice-based analysis of the field of inconsistent mathematics: what motivates it? what role does logic have in it? what distinguishes it from classical mathematics? is it alternative or revolutionary? The second goal is to introduce and defend a new conception of inconsistent mathematics - queer incomaths - as a particularly effective answer to feminist critiques of classical logic and mathematics. This sets the stage for a genuine revolution in mathematics, insofar as it suggests the need for a shift in mainstream attitudes about the rolee of logic and ethics in the practice of mathematics

Conjuntos construibles en modelos valuados en retĂculos

We investigate different set-theoretic constructions in Residuated Logic based on Fitting’s work on Intuitionistic Kripke models of Set Theory. Firstly, we consider constructable sets within valued models of Set Theory. We present two distinct constructions of the constructable universe: L B and L B , and prove that the they are isomorphic to V (von Neumann universe) and L (Gödel’s constructible universe), respectively. Secondly, we generalize Fitting’s work on Intuitionistic Kripke models of Set Theory using Ono and Komori’s Residuated Kripke models. Based on these models, we provide a general- ization of the von Neumann hierarchy in the context of Modal Residuated Logic and prove a translation of formulas between it and a suited Heyting valued model.
