An Experimental Digital Library Platform - A Demonstrator Prototype for the DigLib Project at SICS
Within the framework of the Digital Library project at SICS, this thesis describes the implementation of a demonstrator prototype of a digital library (DigLib); an experimental platform integrating several functions in one common interface. It includes descriptions of the structure and formats of the digital library collection, the tailoring of the search engine Dienst, the construction of a keyword extraction tool, and the design and development of the interface. The platform was realised through sicsDAIS, an agent interaction and presentation system, and is to be used for testing and evaluating various tools for information seeking. The platform supports various user interaction strategies by providing: search in bibliographic records (Dienst); an index of keywords (the Keyword Extraction Function (KEF)); and browsing through the hierarchical structure of the collection. KEF was developed for this thesis work, and extracts and presents keywords from Swedish documents. Although based on a comparatively simple algorithm, KEF contributes by supplying a long-felt want in the area of Information Retrieval. Evaluations of the tasks and the interface still remain to be done, but the digital library is very much up and running. By implementing the platform through sicsDAIS, DigLib can deploy additional tools and search engines without interfering with already running modules. Assessing Visualization Techniques for the Search Process in Digital Libraries
In this paper we present an overview of several visualization techniques to
support the search process in Digital Libraries (DLs). The search process
typically can be separated into three major phases: query formulation and
refinement, browsing through result lists and viewing and interacting with
documents and their properties. We discuss a selection of popular visualization
techniques that have been developed for the different phases to support the
user during the search process. Along prototypes based on the different
techniques we show how the approaches have been implemented. Although various
visualizations have been developed in prototypical systems very few of these
approaches have been adapted into today's DLs. We conclude that this is most
likely due to the fact that most systems are not evaluated intensely in
real-life scenarios with real information seekers and that results of the
interesting visualization techniques are often not comparable. We can say that
many of the assessed systems did not properly address the information need of

A user evaluation of hierarchical phrase browsing
Phrase browsing interfaces based on hierarchies of phrases extracted automatically from document collections offer a useful compromise between automatic full-text searching and manually-created subject indexes. The literature contains descriptions of such systems that many find compelling and persuasive. However, evaluation studies have either been anecdotal, or focused on objective measures of the quality of automatically-extracted index terms, or restricted to questions of computational efficiency and feasibility. This paper reports on an empirical, controlled user study that compares hierarchical phrase browsing with full-text searching over a range of information seeking tasks. Users found the results located via phrase browsing to be relevant and useful but preferred keyword searching for certain types of queries. Users experiences were marred by interface details, including inconsistencies between the phrase browser and the surrounding digital library interface
Ariadne's Thread - Interactive Navigation in a World of Networked Information
This work-in-progress paper introduces an interface for the interactive
visual exploration of the context of queries using the ArticleFirst database, a
product of OCLC. We describe a workflow which allows the user to browse live
entities associated with 65 million articles. In the on-line interface, each
query leads to a specific network representation of the most prevailing
entities: topics (words), authors, journals and Dewey decimal classes linked to
the set of terms in the query. This network represents the context of a query.
Each of the network nodes is clickable: by clicking through, a user traverses a
large space of articles along dimensions of authors, journals, Dewey classes
and words simultaneously. We present different use cases of such an interface.
This paper provides a link between the quest for maps of science and on-going
debates in HCI about the use of interactive information visualisation to

Moving towards Adaptive Search
Information retrieval has become very popular over the last decade with the advent of the Web. Nevertheless, searching on the Web is very different to searching on smaller, often more structured collections such as intranets and digital libraries. Such collections are the focus of the recently started AutoAdapt project1. The project seeks to aid user search by providing well-structured domain knowledge to assist query modification and navigation. There are two challenges: acquiring the domain knowledge and adapting it automatically to the specific interest of the user community.
