Ten Challenges for Normative Multiagent Systems
In this paper we discuss the shift from a legal to an interactionist view
on normative multiagent systems, examples, and ten new challenges in
this more dynamic setting
The Current State of Normative Agent-Based Systems
Recent years have seen an increase in the application of ideas from the social sciences to computational systems. Nowhere has this been more pronounced than in the domain of multiagent systems. Because multiagent systems are composed of multiple individual agents interacting with each other many parallels can be drawn to human and animal societies. One of the main challenges currently faced in multiagent systems research is that of social control. In particular, how can open multiagent systems be configured and organized given their constantly changing structure? One leading solution is to employ the use of social norms. In human societies, social norms are essential to regulation, coordination, and cooperation. The current trend of thinking is that these same principles can be applied to agent societies, of which multiagent systems are one type. In this article, we provide an introduction to and present a holistic viewpoint of the state of normative computing (computational solutions that employ ideas based on social norms.) To accomplish this, we (1) introduce social norms and their application to agent-based systems; (2) identify and describe a normative process abstracted from the existing research; and (3) discuss future directions for research in normative multiagent computing. The intent of this paper is to introduce new researchers to the ideas that underlie normative computing and survey the existing state of the art, as well as provide direction for future research.Norms, Normative Agents, Agents, Agent-Based System, Agent-Based Simulation, Agent-Based Modeling
Towards a Design Framework for Controlled Hybrid Social Games
We propose a framework for designing and deploying games where social behaviour is kept under control. Massively multiple online role playing games as normative multiagent systems
The latest advancements in computer games offer a domain of human and artificial agent behaviour well suited for analysis and development based on normative multi agent systems research. One of the most influential gaming trends today, Massively Multi Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG), poses new questions about the interaction between the players in the game. If we model the players and groups of players in these games as multiagent systems with the possibility to create norms and sanction norm violations we have to create a way to describe the different kind of norms that may appear in these situations. Certain situations in MMORPG are subject to discussions about how norms are created and propagated in a group, one such example involves the sleeper in the game Everquest, from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). The Sleeper was at first designed to be unkillable, but after some events and some considerations from SOE the sleeper was finally killed. The most interesting aspect of the story about the sleeper is how we can interpret the norms being created in this example. We propose a framework to analyse the norms involved in the interaction between players and groups in MMORPG. We argue that our model adds complexity where we find earlier norm typologies lacking some descriptive power of this phenomenon, and we can even describe and understand the confusing event with the sleeper in Everquest

A note on validity in law and regulatory systems (position paper)
The notion of validity fulfils a crucial role in legal theory. The emerging Web 3.0 opens a new landscape
where Semantic Web languages, legal ontologies, and the construction of Normative Multiagent Systems are built up
to cover new regulatory needs. Conceptual models for complex regulatory systems shape the characteristic features
of rules, norms and principles in different ways. This position paper outlines one of such multilayered governance
models, designed for the CAPER platform
Designing normative open virtual enterprises

the globalisation of the economy, the rapid growth of information technologies and the
increase of competitiveness. In this paper we deal with the development of normative
open virtual enterprises (NOVEs). They are systems with a global objective that are
composed of a set of heterogeneous entities and enterprises that exchange services
following a specific normative context. In order to analyse and design systems of this
kind the multi-agent paradigm seems suitable because it offers a specific solution for
supporting the social and contractual relationships between enterprises and for formalising
their business processes. This paper presents how the Regulated Open Multiagent
systems (ROMAS) methodology, an agent-oriented software methodology, can
be used to analyse and design NOVEs. ROMAS offers a complete development
process that allows identifying and formalising of the structure of NOVEs, their
normative context and the interactions among their members. The use of ROMAS is

Exploring the resource recovery potentials of municipal solid waste: a review of solid wastes composting in developing countries
Population explosion, high urbanization and improved living standards have induced rapid changes in quantities and materiacompositions of solid waste generation globally. Until recently solid waste disposal in landfills and open dump sites waconsidered more economical and it is the most widely used methods in developing countries. Hence the potentials in the othealternative methods such as the resource recovery and recycling and their integration into waste management have been scarcelassessed. However, the ever growing challenges posed by the rapidly increasing quantities and compositions of solid wastes ideveloping countries led to the searching for alternative waste disposal methods. In this regard the paper presented an assessmenof the resource potentials of municipal solid waste materials arising from cities in developing countries as a strategy fosustainable solid waste management. Using published data on solid waste composition the paper has identified that there is higpotentials of composting in the solid waste stream from cities in developing countries. In conclusion, it recommended the recoverof organic waste material and papers for composting and the recycling of plastic, metals, textiles and others to explore their resource recovery potentials. This will largely reduce the ultimate quantities of solid waste for disposal and lower the operatincosts. This strategy will achieve sustainable waste management in developing countries. It is hoped that the paper has provided useful guide for wastes management policy decisions in developing countries
