Este número da revista Cadernos de Estudos Sociais estava em organização quando fomos colhidos pela morte do sociólogo Ernesto Laclau. Seu falecimento em 13 de abril de 2014 surpreendeu a todos, e particularmente ao editor Joanildo Burity, que foi seu orientando de doutorado na University of Essex, Inglaterra, e que recentemente o trouxe à Fundação Joaquim Nabuco para uma palestra, permitindo que muitos pudessem dialogar com um dos grandes intelectuais latinoamericanos contemporâneos. Assim, buscamos fazer uma homenagem ao sociólogo argentino publicando uma entrevista inédita concedida durante a sua passagem pelo Recife, em 2013, encerrando essa revista com uma sessão especial sobre a sua trajetória

Intra- and Extra-articular Features of Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis in the Cat (Felis catus).
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is an uncommon clinical entity in human and veterinary medicine. However, the condition is severely debilitating and is life-limiting if not treated. This study sought to characterize the intra- and extra-articular features of naturally occurring TMJ ankylosis in cats. TMJs from client-owned cats (n = 5) that underwent bilateral TMJ gap arthroplasty were examined and compared with TMJs from healthy, age-matched feline cadavers (n = 2) by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), micro-computed tomography (μCT) and histologically. Features of bilateral intra- and extra-articular ankylosis compounded by degenerative joint lesions were identified radiographically and histologically in all affected cats. Features of TMJ 'true' ankylosis included variable intracapsular fibro-osseous bridging, degeneration of the disc and the articular surfaces, narrowing of the joint space and flattening of the condylar process of the mandible. Extra-articular features of TMJ ankylosis included periarticular bone formation and fibro-osseous bridging between the mandible, zygomatic arch and coronoid process. In addition, subchondral bone loss or sclerosis, irregular and altered joint contours and irregularly increased density of the medullary bone characterized the degenerative changes of the osseous components of the TMJ. Complex radiological and histological features of both ankylosis and pseudoankylosis were identified that clinically manifested in complete inability to open the mouth

Design and manufacture of a customised temporomandibular prosthesis
In this work, design, manufacture and surgical success of a personalised temporomandibular prosthesis is featured. A fused deposition modelling technique and Die forging process constitute the methodology used in a patient who had an amputation in the upper third branch of the mandible, without considering the joint capsule. The implant was designed using a processed resection image of a computational tomography and using the methodology of Özkaya and Nordin. The jaw operating conditions were simulated by the finite element method (FEM). The main considered factors were the morphological geometry of the patient, implant fixation in the first third of the branch, implant fixation on
the chin, dental post for placement of the teeth, and the form of the sub-lingual fossa weight optimisation. Special consideration was to preserve the patients facial aesthetics.Peer Reviewe
THREE-DIMENSIONAL COMPUTER MODELLING AND STRESS-STRAIN ANALYSIS OF TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT
The main purpose of the study is to build 3D model of temporomandibular joint and mandible using programs for modelling and design, research stress and strain in cartilage and bone of model depending on different contraction of chewing muscles (especially lateral pterygoid muscle). There were used such methods as computer tomography data, finite element method and analysis topography of lateral pterygoid muscle on cadavers. In results of study was obtained maximal stress in anterior and distal parts of articular disc between 1,4–3 MPa and 0,4–1 MPa. Thus, static loads of articular disc were different, depends on force of contraction lateral pterygoid muscle. Muscle disturbances (hyperfunctioning, atrophy etc.) should be considered in treatment of temporomandibular dysfunction and examined on magnetic resonance investigation if it is present in the same patient
FEM and BEM Analysis of a Human Mandible with Added Temporomandibular Joints
Mathematical modelling of human mandible and its temporomandibular joints (TMJs) is one of the most
important steps for developing a powerful forecasting tool to analyse the stress/strain behaviour of a human masticatory
system under occlusal loads.
In this work the structural behaviour of a mandible with articular discs, undergoing a unilateral occlusion, is numerically
analysed by means of both Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM). The mandible is
considered as completely edentulous and its anisotropic and non-homogeneous bone material behaviour is modelled. The
material behaviour of the articular discs was assumed to be either elastic or hyper-elastic. The loads applied to the
mandible are related to the active muscle groups during a unilateral occlusion. The results of FEM and BEM analyses are
presented mainly in terms of stress distribution on the mandible and on the articular discs. Due to the uncertainty in the
determination of the biological parameters, a sensitivity analysis is provided, which demonstrates the impact of the
variation of articular disc stiffness and TMJ friction coefficient on the mandible stress peaks and on the occlusal loads (for
a given intensity of muscle loads). Moreover a comparison between the effectiveness of the BEM and FEM numerical
approaches on this kind of problem is provided
