    Get PDF
    Temporary Services with Carmen Papalia explores the topic of accessibility as it relates to public space, the Art institution, and visual culture through an interview, an essay, and case studies. This book is part of the Reference Points series published through Portland State University Art and Social Practice MFA Program. The series is an evolving pedagogical framework in which graduate students formulate and research a significant topic or practitioner(s) related to socially engaged art. Because the series is designed to shift and respond to the concerns of the program\u27s current students and faculty, mode, structure, and content are open-ended.https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/reference_points/1006/thumbnail.jp

    Temporary Marriage

    Parties to a temporary marriage agree in advance that their marriage will only last for a fixed period of time unless renewed: that it will automatically expire after two years, for instance, or five, or twenty. This paper defends the claim that temporary marriages deserve state recognition. The main argument for this is an application of a principle of marriage equality. Some other arguments for are also canvassed, including an argument from religious freedom, and a number of arguments against recognition are also discussed. The paper also discusses the question of whether such “temporary marriages” are in fact a kind of marriage, and defends the claim that they are, or would be, genuinely marriages

    Subsidized Jobs for Unemployed Workers in Slovakia

    Full text link
    This paper uses an administrative dataset from the Slovak Republic on durations of individual unemployment spells. The focus of the analysis is on the effect of the duration of temporary subsidized jobs on the job finding rate of unemployed workers. It appears that the duration of the temporary jobs is an important determinant of the speed by which unemployed workers find regular jobs. In this sense shorter temporary jobs are more effective than long temporary jobs. The main reason for this is probably that temporary jobs with a long duration induce workers in the first period on the temporary job to search less intensive for a regular job than temporary jobs with a short duration do.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39695/3/wp311.pd

    How temporary is temporary employment in Spain?.

    We use the Spanish Labor Force Survey (EPA) for the period 1987-1996 to study trends, characteristics, and labor force transitions of temporary workers. These are workers who hold fixed-term contracts, which the Spanish labor law distinguishes from indefinite contracts. Since the EPA questionnaire allows us to identify permanent from temporary workers, we are able to compare their characteristics. More importantly, we can use matched fIles from the same data source to analyze transitions from temporary to permanent employment. The aim is to test the extent to which temporary workers tend to be trapped in temporary employment relationships. Indeed, we fmd some evidence of this.Permanent and temporary employment; Fixed-term contract; Transition rate;

    1st Annual Report of the Temporary Home for Women and Children

    In reviewing the work done by us, in this, the first year of our organization, it seems desirable to give a brief sketch of the causes which led to the establishment of the Home. Early last spring a few ladies met to incorporate a new charitable society, having as its object, \u27\u27to provide shelter for the women and children of the State, who might be found in the streets, or in bad homes, in police stations, or in public institutions, or discharged from imprisonment, or who are reduced to dependence on public charity and who are not elsewhere provided with a beneficent home influence. lt had been for years the aim of the station committee of the Women\u27s Christian Temperance Union, to provide for women discharged from imprisonment, homes in some neighborhood, where the surroundings should be such as to encourage them to make a fresh start in life. But places are not found without searching, where a woman of wrong tendencies and a dark record in the past will be received, and the need was deeply felt of a temporary place of shelter, where a good influence could be exerted and the first impulses given towards a better life, while efforts were making towards procuring a more permanent home. There was a desire to help another class of women also, whose weak moral natures had led them to yield to temptation, and who had been made to feel in consequence that they were outside the reach of sympathy, and that any effort to lead a virtuous life was hopeless. Many of these were in homes where all the influences were bad, and the only hope lay in removing them entirely from their former associations. In addition to those of openly immoral lives, there were others who needed to be shielded from temptation, especially children, who from unfortunate surroundings were almost sure to grow up into vicious and dangerous members of the community, should they have no restraining and ennobling influences thrown around them. A consideration of all these facts, led to the meeting which has been referred to, for the incorporation of this society. This was held on April 6th, 1882. Later, the number of ladies was increased and constituted a board of managers, an advisory board of gentlemen and an auxiliary state committee were chosen, and the organization completed.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1021/thumbnail.jp

    Temporary Trade

    Get PDF
    Most trade theories assume bilateral trade relationships are forged on the basis of some comparative advantages, scale considerations, market structure or some productivity advantage of firms. Since these factors change slowly, bilateral trade relationships should be stable. However, we argue that over half of the non-zero bilateral trade relationships are of temporary nature: they last for a short period only or appear and disappear in an erratic fashion. With a very detailed country-product transaction level dataset on Hungarian exports, evidence is provided for the importance of temporary trade relationships at the bilateral level. A large share of bilateral trade flows are driven by just a few firms, and results indicate that temporary trade is important for all kinds of firms and products. In terms of empirical applications, we show that gravity equations suggest important differences between the determinants of permanent and temporary trade; and the extensive and intensive margins of trade can also be very sensitive to changes in temporary trade.international trade, duration of trade, firm-product level data

    Transitions into permanent employment in Spain : an empirical analysis for young workers

    Get PDF
    We analyze the Spanish temporary workers’ transitions into permanent employment and to what extent those who become unemployed are able to achieve a permanent job. Our focus is placed on the role of the individual’s sequence of temporary contracts on the probability of moving from temporary into permanent employment. We apply multiplespell duration techniques to a longitudinal dataset of temporary workers obtained from Social Security records for the period 1996-2003. We basically find that even though transitions into permanent employment increase with tenure, temporary jobs do not constitute stepping stones towards permanent employment, since the probability of obtaining a permanent job decreases with repeated temporary jobs. Results also show that individuals with high duration of unemployment flow into permanent work less frequently

    The twentieth year of the Temporary Home for Women and Children has passed, and the institution, planted in weakness, nurtured under reproach, and kept alive only by untiring effort, has become firmly established as one of the well-organized charities of the State, with a record entitling it not only to respect and honor from the people, but to an annual appropriation from the State treasury to carry on its work.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1009/thumbnail.jp
