    Joint precoding and antenna selection in massive mimo systems

    This thesis presents an overview of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and proposes new algorithms to jointly precode and select the antennas. Massive MIMO is a new technology, which is candidate for comprising the fifth-generation (5G) of mobile cellular systems. This technology employs a huge amount of antennas at the base station and can reach high data rates under favorable, or asymptotically favorable, propagation conditions, while using simple linear processing. However, massive MIMO systems have some drawbacks, such as the high cost related to the base stations. A way to deal with this issue is to employ antenna selection algorithms at the base stations. These algorithms reduce the number of active antennas, decreasing the deployment and maintenance costs related to the base stations. Moreover, this thesis also describes a class of nonlinear precoders that are rarely addressed in the literature; these techniques are able to generate precoded sparse signals in order to achieve joint precoding and antenna selection. This thesis proposes two precoders belonging to this class, where the number of selected antennas is controlled by a design parameter. Simulation results show that the proposed precoders reach a lower bit-error rate than the classical antenna selection algorithms. Furthermore, simulation results show that the proposed precoders present a linear relation between the aforementioned design parameter that controls the signals’ sparsity and the number of selected antennas. Such relation is invariant to the number of base station’s antennas and the number of terminals served by this base station.Esta dissertação apresenta uma visão geral sobre MIMO (do termo em inglês, multiple-input multiple-output) massivo e propõe novos algoritmos que permitem a pré-codificacão de sinais e a seleção de antenas de forma simultânea. MIMO massivo é uma nova tecnologia candidata para compor a quinta geração (5G) dos sistemas celulares. Essa tecnologia utiliza uma quantidade muito grande de antenas na estação-base e, sob condições de propagação favorável ou assintoticamente favorável, pode alcançar taxas de transmissão elevadas, ainda que utilizando um simples processamento linear. Entretanto, os sistemas MIMO massivo apresentam algumas desvantagens, como por exemplo, o alto custo de implementação das estações-bases. Uma maneira de lidar com esse problema é utilizar algoritmos de seleção de antenas na estação-base. Com esses algoritmos é possível reduzir o número de antenas ativas e consequentemente reduzir o custo nas estações-bases. Essa dissertação também apresenta uma classe pouco estudada de pré-codificadores não-lineares que buscam sinais pré-codificados esparsos para realizar a seleção de antenas conjuntamente com a pré-codificação. Além disso, este trabalho propõem dois novos pré-codificadores pertencentes a essa classe, para os quais o número de antenas selecionadas é controlado por um parâmetro de projeto. Resultados de simulações mostram que os pré-codificadores propostos conseguem uma BER (do termo em inglês, bit-error rate) menor que os algoritmos clássicos usados para selecionar antenas. Além disso, resultados de simulações mostram que os pré-codificadores propostos apresentam uma relação linear com o parâmetro de projeto que controla a quantidade de antenas selecionadas; tal relação independe do número de antenas na estação-base e do número de terminais servidos por essa estação

    Collaborative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks

    The radio frequency (RF) spectrum is a scarce natural resource, currently regulated by government agencies. With the explosive emergence of wireless applications, the demands for the RF spectrum are constantly increasing. On the other hand, it has been reported that localised temporal and geographic spectrum utilisation efficiency is extremely low. Cognitive radio is an innovative technology designed to improve spectrum utilisation by exploiting those spectrum opportunities. This ability is dependent upon spectrum sensing, which is one of most critical components in a cognitive radio system. A significant challenge is to sense the whole RF spectrum at a particular physical location in a short observation time. Otherwise, performance degrades with longer observation times since the lagging response to spectrum holes implies low spectrum utilisation efficiency. Hence, developing an efficient wideband spectrum sensing technique is prime important. In this thesis, a multirate asynchronous sub-Nyquist sampling (MASS) system that employs multiple low-rate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) is developed that implements wideband spectrum sensing. The key features of the MASS system are, 1) low implementation complexity, 2) energy-efficiency for sharing spectrum sensing data, and 3) robustness against the lack of time synchronisation. The conditions under which recovery of the full spectrum is unique are presented using compressive sensing (CS) analysis. The MASS system is applied to both centralised and distributed cognitive radio networks. When the spectra of the cognitive radio nodes have a common spectral support, using one low-rate ADC in each cognitive radio node can successfully recover the full spectrum. This is obtained by applying a hybrid matching pursuit (HMP) algorithm - a synthesis of distributed compressive sensing simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (DCS-SOMP) and compressive sampling matching pursuit (CoSaMP). Moreover, a multirate spectrum detection (MSD) system is introduced to detect the primary users from a small number of measurements without ever reconstructing the full spectrum. To achieve a better detection performance, a data fusion strategy is developed for combining sensing data from all cognitive radio nodes. Theoretical bounds on detection performance are derived for distributed cognitive radio nodes suffering from additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), Rayleigh fading, and log-normal fading channels. In conclusion, MASS and MSD both have a low implementation complexity, high energy efficiency, good data compression capability, and are applicable to distributed cognitive radio networks

    6G Wireless Systems: Vision, Requirements, Challenges, Insights, and Opportunities

    Mobile communications have been undergoing a generational change every ten years or so. However, the time difference between the so-called "G's" is also decreasing. While fifth-generation (5G) systems are becoming a commercial reality, there is already significant interest in systems beyond 5G, which we refer to as the sixth-generation (6G) of wireless systems. In contrast to the already published papers on the topic, we take a top-down approach to 6G. We present a holistic discussion of 6G systems beginning with lifestyle and societal changes driving the need for next generation networks. This is followed by a discussion into the technical requirements needed to enable 6G applications, based on which we dissect key challenges, as well as possibilities for practically realizable system solutions across all layers of the Open Systems Interconnection stack. Since many of the 6G applications will need access to an order-of-magnitude more spectrum, utilization of frequencies between 100 GHz and 1 THz becomes of paramount importance. As such, the 6G eco-system will feature a diverse range of frequency bands, ranging from below 6 GHz up to 1 THz. We comprehensively characterize the limitations that must be overcome to realize working systems in these bands; and provide a unique perspective on the physical, as well as higher layer challenges relating to the design of next generation core networks, new modulation and coding methods, novel multiple access techniques, antenna arrays, wave propagation, radio-frequency transceiver design, as well as real-time signal processing. We rigorously discuss the fundamental changes required in the core networks of the future that serves as a major source of latency for time-sensitive applications.     Spectrum measurement, sensing, analysis and simulation in the context of cognitive radio

    The radio frequency (RF) spectrum is a scarce natural resource, currently regulated locally by national agencies. Spectrum has been assigned to different services and it is very difficult for emerging wireless technologies to gain access due to rigid spectmm policy and heavy opportunity cost. Current spectrum management by licensing causes artificial spectrum scarcity. Spectrum monitoring shows that many frequencies and times are unused. Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is a potential solution to low spectrum efficiency. In DSA, an unlicensed user opportunistically uses vacant licensed spectrum with the help of cognitive radio. Cognitive radio is a key enabling technology for DSA. In a cognitive radio system, an unlicensed Secondary User (SU) identifies vacant licensed spectrum allocated to a Primary User (PU) and uses it without harmful interference to the PU. Cognitive radio increases spectrum usage efficiency while protecting legacy-licensed systems. The purpose of this thesis is to bring together a group of CR concepts and explore how we can make the transition from conventional radio to cognitive radio. Specific goals of the thesis are firstly the measurement of the radio spectrum to understand the current spectrum usage in the Humber region, UK in the context of cognitive radio. Secondly, to characterise the performance of cyclostationary feature detectors through theoretical analysis, hardware implementation, and real-time performance measurements. Thirdly, to mitigate the effect of degradation due to multipath fading and shadowing, the use of -wideband cooperative sensing techniques using adaptive sensing technique and multi-bit soft decision is proposed, which it is believed will introduce more spectral opportunities over wider frequency ranges and achieve higher opportunistic aggregate throughput.Understanding spectrum usage is the first step toward the future deployment of cognitive radio systems. Several spectrum usage measurement campaigns have been performed, mainly in the USA and Europe. These studies show locality and time dependence. In the first part of this thesis a spectrum usage measurement campaign in the Humber region, is reported. Spectrum usage patterns are identified and noise is characterised. A significant amount of spectrum was shown to be underutilized and available for the secondary use. The second part addresses the question: how can you tell if a spectrum channel is being used? Two spectrum sensing techniques are evaluated: Energy Detection and Cyclostationary Feature Detection. The performance of these techniques is compared using the measurements performed in the second part of the thesis. Cyclostationary feature detection is shown to be more robust to noise. The final part of the thesis considers the identification of vacant channels by combining spectrum measurements from multiple locations, known as cooperative sensing. Wideband cooperative sensing is proposed using multi resolution spectrum sensing (MRSS) with a multi-bit decision technique. Next, a two-stage adaptive system with cooperative wideband sensing is proposed based on the combination of energy detection and cyclostationary feature detection. Simulations using the system above indicate that the two-stage adaptive sensing cooperative wideband outperforms single site detection in terms of detection success and mean detection time in the context of wideband cooperative sensing

    Novel Estimation and Detection Techniques for 5G Networks

    The thesis presents several detection and estimation techniques that can be incorporated into the fifth-generation (5G) networks. First, the thesis presents a novel system for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to estimate the channel blindly. The system is based on modulating particular pairs of subcarriers using amplitude shift keying (ASK) and phase-shift keying (PSK) adjacent in the frequency domain, which enables the realization of a decision-directed (DD) one-shot blind channel estimator (OSBCE). The performance of the proposed estimator is evaluated in terms of the mean squared error (MSE), where an accurate analytical expression is derived and verified using Monte Carlo simulation under various channel conditions. The system has also extended to exploits the channel correlation over consecutive OFDM symbols to estimate the channel parameters blindly. Furthermore, a reliable and accurate approach has been introduced to evaluate the spectral efficiency of various communications systems. The metric takes into consideration the system dynamics, QoS requirements, and design constraints. Next, a novel efficient receiver design for wireless communication systems that incorporate OFDM transmission has been proposed. The proposed receiver does not require channel estimation or equalization to perform coherent data detection. Instead, channel estimation, equalization, and data detection are combined into a single operation, and hence, the detector performs a direct data detector (D3). The performance of the proposed D3 is thoroughly analyzed theoretically in terms of bit error rate (BER), where closed-form accurate approximations are derived for several cases of interest, and validated by Monte Carlo simulations. The computational complexity of D3 depends on the length of the sequence to be detected. Nevertheless, a significant complexity reduction can be achieved using the Viterbi algorithm (VA). Finally, the thesis proposes a low-complexity algorithm for detecting anomalies in industrial steelmaking furnaces operation. The algorithm utilizes the vibration measurements collected from several built-in sensors to compute the temporal correlation using the autocorrelation function (ACF). Furthermore, the proposed model parameters are tuned by solving multi-objective optimization using a genetic algorithm (GA). The proposed algorithm is tested using a practical dataset provided by an industrial steelmaking plant

    Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output automotive radar with novel signal processing algorithms

    Advanced driver assistance systems that actively assist the driver based on environment perception achieved significant advances in recent years. Along with this development, autonomous driving became a major research topic that aims ultimately at development of fully automated, driverless vehicles. Since such applications rely on environment perception, their ever increasing sophistication imposes growing demands on environmental sensors. Specifically, the need for reliable environment sensing necessitates the development of more sophisticated, high-performance radar sensors. A further vital challenge in terms of increased radar interference arises with the growing market penetration of the vehicular radar technology. To address these challenges, in many respects novel approaches and radar concepts are required. As the modulation is one of the key factors determining the radar performance, the research of new modulation schemes for automotive radar becomes essential. A topic that emerged in the last years is the radar operating with digitally generated waveforms based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Initially, the use of OFDM for radar was motivated by the combination of radar with communication via modulation of the radar waveform with communication data. Some subsequent works studied the use of OFDM as a modulation scheme in many different radar applications - from adaptive radar processing to synthetic aperture radar. This suggests that the flexibility provided by OFDM based digital generation of radar waveforms can potentially enable novel radar concepts that are well suited for future automotive radar systems. This thesis aims to explore the perspectives of OFDM as a modulation scheme for high-performance, robust and adaptive automotive radar. To this end, novel signal processing algorithms and OFDM based radar concepts are introduced in this work. The main focus of the thesis is on high-end automotive radar applications, while the applicability for real time implementation is of primary concern. The first part of this thesis focuses on signal processing algorithms for distance-velocity estimation. As a foundation for the algorithms presented in this thesis, a novel and rigorous signal model for OFDM radar is introduced. Based on this signal model, the limitations of the state-of-the-art OFDM radar signal processing are pointed out. To overcome these limitations, we propose two novel signal processing algorithms that build upon the conventional processing and extend it by more sophisticated modeling of the radar signal. The first method named all-cell Doppler compensation (ACDC) overcomes the Doppler sensitivity problem of OFDM radar. The core idea of this algorithm is the scenario-independent correction of Doppler shifts for the entire measurement signal. Since Doppler effect is a major concern for OFDM radar and influences the radar parametrization, its complete compensation opens new perspectives for OFDM radar. It not only achieves an improved, Doppler-independent performance, it also enables more favorable system parametrization. The second distance-velocity estimation algorithm introduced in this thesis addresses the issue of range and Doppler frequency migration due to the target’s motion during the measurement. For the conventional radar signal processing, these migration effects set an upper limit on the simultaneously achievable distance and velocity resolution. The proposed method named all-cell migration compensation (ACMC) extends the underlying OFDM radar signal model to account for the target motion. As a result, the effect of migration is compensated implicitly for the entire radar measurement, which leads to an improved distance and velocity resolution. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in overcoming the two major limitations of the conventional OFDM radar signal processing. As multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is a well-established technology for improving the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, the second part of this work studies the multiplexing methods for OFDM radar that enable simultaneous use of multiple transmit antennas for MIMO radar processing. After discussing the drawbacks of known multiplexing methods, we introduce two advanced multiplexing schemes for OFDM-MIMO radar based on non-equidistant interleaving of OFDM subcarriers. These multiplexing approaches exploit the multicarrier structure of OFDM for generation of orthogonal waveforms that enable a simultaneous operation of multiple MIMO channels occupying the same bandwidth. The primary advantage of these methods is that despite multiplexing they maintain all original radar parameters (resolution and unambiguous range in distance and velocity) for each individual MIMO channel. To obtain favorable interleaving patterns with low sidelobes, we propose an optimization approach based on genetic algorithms. Furthermore, to overcome the drawback of increased sidelobes due to subcarrier interleaving, we study the applicability of sparse processing methods for the distance-velocity estimation from measurements of non-equidistantly interleaved OFDM-MIMO radar. We introduce a novel sparsity based frequency estimation algorithm designed for this purpose. The third topic addressed in this work is the robustness of OFDM radar to interference from other radar sensors. In this part of the work we study the interference robustness of OFDM radar and propose novel interference mitigation techniques. The first interference suppression algorithm we introduce exploits the robustness of OFDM to narrowband interference by dropping subcarriers strongly corrupted by interference from evaluation. To avoid increase of sidelobes due to missing subcarriers, their values are reconstructed from the neighboring ones based on linear prediction methods. As a further measure for increasing the interference robustness in a more universal manner, we propose the extension of OFDM radar with cognitive features. We introduce the general concept of cognitive radar that is capable of adapting to the current spectral situation for avoiding interference. Our work focuses mainly on waveform adaptation techniques; we propose adaptation methods that allow dynamic interference avoidance without affecting adversely the estimation performance. The final part of this work focuses on prototypical implementation of OFDM-MIMO radar. With the constructed prototype, the feasibility of OFDM for high-performance radar applications is demonstrated. Furthermore, based on this radar prototype the algorithms presented in this thesis are validated experimentally. The measurements confirm the applicability of the proposed algorithms and concepts for real world automotive radar implementations

    Spectrum sensing and occupancy prediction for cognitive machine-to-machine wireless networks

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in partial fulfil ment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) introduces an additional challenge to the existing spectrum under-utilisation problem as large scale deployments of thousands devices are expected to require wireless connectivity. Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) has been proposed as a means of improving the spectrum utilisation of wireless systems. Based on the Cognitive Radio (CR) paradigm, DSA enables unlicensed spectrum users to sense their spectral environment and adapt their operational parameters to opportunistically access any temporally unoccupied bands without causing interference to the primary spectrum users. In the same context, CR inspired Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications have recently been proposed as a potential solution to the spectrum utilisation problem, which has been driven by the ever increasing number of interconnected devices. M2M communications introduce new challenges for CR in terms of operational environments and design requirements. With spectrum sensing being the key function for CR, this thesis investigates the performance of spectrum sensing and proposes novel sensing approaches and models to address the sensing problem for cognitive M2M deployments. In this thesis, the behaviour of Energy Detection (ED) spectrum sensing for cognitive M2M nodes is modelled using the two-wave with dffi use power fading model. This channel model can describe a variety of realistic fading conditions including worse than Rayleigh scenarios that are expected to occur within the operational environments of cognitive M2M communication systems. The results suggest that ED based spectrum sensing fails to meet the sensing requirements over worse than Rayleigh conditions and consequently requires the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to be increased by up to 137%. However, by employing appropriate diversity and node cooperation techniques, the sensing performance can be improved by up to 11.5dB in terms of the required SNR. These results are particularly useful in analysing the eff ects of severe fading in cognitive M2M systems and thus they can be used to design effi cient CR transceivers and to quantify the trade-o s between detection performance and energy e fficiency. A novel predictive spectrum sensing scheme that exploits historical data of past sensing events to predict channel occupancy is proposed and analysed. This approach allows CR terminals to sense only the channels that are predicted to be unoccupied rather than the whole band of interest. Based on this approach, a spectrum occupancy predictor is developed and experimentally validated. The proposed scheme achieves a prediction accuracy of up to 93% which in turn can lead to up to 84% reduction of the spectrum sensing cost. Furthermore, a novel probabilistic model for describing the channel availability in both the vertical and horizontal polarisations is developed. The proposed model is validated based on a measurement campaign for operational scenarios where CR terminals may change their polarisation during their operation. A Gaussian approximation is used to model the empirical channel availability data with more than 95% confi dence bounds. The proposed model can be used as a means of improving spectrum sensing performance by using statistical knowledge on the primary users occupancy pattern
