Agent Based Approaches to Engineering Autonomous Space Software
Current approaches to the engineering of space software such as satellite
control systems are based around the development of feedback controllers using
packages such as MatLab's Simulink toolbox. These provide powerful tools for
engineering real time systems that adapt to changes in the environment but are
limited when the controller itself needs to be adapted.
We are investigating ways in which ideas from temporal logics and agent
programming can be integrated with the use of such control systems to provide a
more powerful layer of autonomous decision making. This paper will discuss our

Principles and Concepts of Agent-Based Modelling for Developing Geospatial Simulations
The aim of this paper is to outline fundamental concepts and principles of the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) paradigm, with particular reference to the development of geospatial simulations. The paper begins with a brief definition of modelling, followed by a classification of model types, and a comment regarding a shift (in certain circumstances) towards modelling systems at the individual-level. In particular, automata approaches (e.g. Cellular Automata, CA, and ABM) have been particularly popular, with ABM moving to the fore. A definition of agents and agent-based models is given; identifying their advantages and disadvantages, especially in relation to geospatial modelling. The potential use of agent-based models is discussed, and how-to instructions for developing an agent-based model are provided. Types of simulation / modelling systems available for ABM are defined, supplemented with criteria to consider before choosing a particular system for a modelling endeavour. Information pertaining to a selection of simulation / modelling systems (Swarm, MASON, Repast, StarLogo, NetLogo, OBEUS, AgentSheets and AnyLogic) is provided, categorised by their licensing policy (open source, shareware / freeware and proprietary systems). The evaluation (i.e. verification, calibration, validation and analysis) of agent-based models and their output is examined, and noteworthy applications are discussed.Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a particularly useful medium for representing model input and output of a geospatial nature. However, GIS are not well suited to dynamic modelling (e.g. ABM). In particular, problems of representing time and change within GIS are highlighted. Consequently, this paper explores the opportunity of linking (through coupling or integration / embedding) a GIS with a simulation / modelling system purposely built, and therefore better suited to supporting the requirements of ABM. This paper concludes with a synthesis of the discussion that has proceeded. Modelling and simulating change in reforesting mountain landscapes using a social-ecological framework
Natural reforestation of European mountain landscapes raises major environmental and societal issues. With local stakeholders in the Pyrenees National Park area (France), we studied agricultural landscape colonisation by ash (Fraxinus excelsior) to enlighten its impacts on biodiversity and other landscape functions of importance for the valley socio-economics. The study comprised an integrated assessment of land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) since the 1950s, and a scenario analysis of alternative future policy. We combined knowledge and methods from landscape ecology, land change and agricultural sciences, and a set of coordinated field studies to capture interactions and feedback in the local landscape/land-use system. Our results elicited the hierarchically-nested relationships between social and ecological processes. Agricultural change played a preeminent role in the spatial and temporal patterns of LUCC. Landscape colonisation by ash at the parcel level of organisation was merely controlled by grassland management, and in fact depended on the farmer's land management at the whole-farm level. LUCC patterns at the landscape level depended to a great extent on interactions between farm household behaviours and the spatial arrangement of landholdings within the landscape mosaic. Our results stressed the need to represent the local SES function at a fine scale to adequately capture scenarios of change in landscape functions. These findings orientated our modelling choices in the building an agent-based model for LUCC simulation (SMASH - Spatialized Multi-Agent System of landscape colonization by ASH). We discuss our method and results with reference to topical issues in interdisciplinary research into the sustainability of multifunctional landscapes
Data-driven modelling of biological multi-scale processes
Biological processes involve a variety of spatial and temporal scales. A
holistic understanding of many biological processes therefore requires
multi-scale models which capture the relevant properties on all these scales.
In this manuscript we review mathematical modelling approaches used to describe
the individual spatial scales and how they are integrated into holistic models.
We discuss the relation between spatial and temporal scales and the implication
of that on multi-scale modelling. Based upon this overview over
state-of-the-art modelling approaches, we formulate key challenges in
mathematical and computational modelling of biological multi-scale and
multi-physics processes. In particular, we considered the availability of
analysis tools for multi-scale models and model-based multi-scale data
integration. We provide a compact review of methods for model-based data
integration and model-based hypothesis testing. Furthermore, novel approaches
and recent trends are discussed, including computation time reduction using
reduced order and surrogate models, which contribute to the solution of
inference problems. We conclude the manuscript by providing a few ideas for the

Learning Representations in Model-Free Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning
Common approaches to Reinforcement Learning (RL) are seriously challenged by
large-scale applications involving huge state spaces and sparse delayed reward
feedback. Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (HRL) methods attempt to address
this scalability issue by learning action selection policies at multiple levels
of temporal abstraction. Abstraction can be had by identifying a relatively
small set of states that are likely to be useful as subgoals, in concert with
the learning of corresponding skill policies to achieve those subgoals. Many
approaches to subgoal discovery in HRL depend on the analysis of a model of the
environment, but the need to learn such a model introduces its own problems of
scale. Once subgoals are identified, skills may be learned through intrinsic
motivation, introducing an internal reward signal marking subgoal attainment.
In this paper, we present a novel model-free method for subgoal discovery using
incremental unsupervised learning over a small memory of the most recent
experiences (trajectories) of the agent. When combined with an intrinsic
motivation learning mechanism, this method learns both subgoals and skills,
based on experiences in the environment. Thus, we offer an original approach to
HRL that does not require the acquisition of a model of the environment,
suitable for large-scale applications. We demonstrate the efficiency of our
method on two RL problems with sparse delayed feedback: a variant of the rooms
environment and the first screen of the ATARI 2600 Montezuma's Revenge game
