    Towards Intelligent Telerobotics: Visualization and Control of Remote Robot

    Human-machine cooperative or co-robotics has been recognized as the next generation of robotics. In contrast to current systems that use limited-reasoning strategies or address problems in narrow contexts, new co-robot systems will be characterized by their flexibility, resourcefulness, varied modeling or reasoning approaches, and use of real-world data in real time, demonstrating a level of intelligence and adaptability seen in humans and animals. The research I focused is in the two sub-field of co-robotics: teleoperation and telepresence. We firstly explore the ways of teleoperation using mixed reality techniques. I proposed a new type of display: hybrid-reality display (HRD) system, which utilizes commodity projection device to project captured video frame onto 3D replica of the actual target surface. It provides a direct alignment between the frame of reference for the human subject and that of the displayed image. The advantage of this approach lies in the fact that no wearing device needed for the users, providing minimal intrusiveness and accommodating users eyes during focusing. The field-of-view is also significantly increased. From a user-centered design standpoint, the HRD is motivated by teleoperation accidents, incidents, and user research in military reconnaissance etc. Teleoperation in these environments is compromised by the Keyhole Effect, which results from the limited field of view of reference. The technique contribution of the proposed HRD system is the multi-system calibration which mainly involves motion sensor, projector, cameras and robotic arm. Due to the purpose of the system, the accuracy of calibration should also be restricted within millimeter level. The followed up research of HRD is focused on high accuracy 3D reconstruction of the replica via commodity devices for better alignment of video frame. Conventional 3D scanner lacks either depth resolution or be very expensive. We proposed a structured light scanning based 3D sensing system with accuracy within 1 millimeter while robust to global illumination and surface reflection. Extensive user study prove the performance of our proposed algorithm. In order to compensate the unsynchronization between the local station and remote station due to latency introduced during data sensing and communication, 1-step-ahead predictive control algorithm is presented. The latency between human control and robot movement can be formulated as a linear equation group with a smooth coefficient ranging from 0 to 1. This predictive control algorithm can be further formulated by optimizing a cost function. We then explore the aspect of telepresence. Many hardware designs have been developed to allow a camera to be placed optically directly behind the screen. The purpose of such setups is to enable two-way video teleconferencing that maintains eye-contact. However, the image from the see-through camera usually exhibits a number of imaging artifacts such as low signal to noise ratio, incorrect color balance, and lost of details. Thus we develop a novel image enhancement framework that utilizes an auxiliary color+depth camera that is mounted on the side of the screen. By fusing the information from both cameras, we are able to significantly improve the quality of the see-through image. Experimental results have demonstrated that our fusion method compares favorably against traditional image enhancement/warping methods that uses only a single image

    The Empirical Foundations of Teleradiology and Related Applications: A Review of the Evidence

    Introduction: Radiology was founded on a technological discovery by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. Teleradiology also had its roots in technology dating back to 1947 with the successful transmission of radiographic images through telephone lines. Diagnostic radiology has become the eye of medicine in terms of diagnosing and treating injury and disease. This article documents the empirical foundations of teleradiology. Methods: A selective review of the credible literature during the past decade (2005?2015) was conducted, using robust research design and adequate sample size as criteria for inclusion. Findings: The evidence regarding feasibility of teleradiology and related information technology applications has been well documented for several decades. The majority of studies focused on intermediate outcomes, as indicated by comparability between teleradiology and conventional radiology. A consistent trend of concordance between the two modalities was observed in terms of diagnostic accuracy and reliability.     Augmented Reality (AR) is a natural development from virtual reality (VR), which was developed several decades earlier. AR complements VR in many ways. Due to the advantages of the user being able to see both the real and virtual objects simultaneously, AR is far more intuitive, but it's not completely detached from human factors and other restrictions. AR doesn't consume as much time and effort in the applications because it's not required to construct the entire virtual scene and the environment.     Automated shape analysis and visualization of the human back.

    Spinal and back deformities can lead to pain and discomfort, disrupting productivity, and may require prolonged treatment. The conventional method of assessing and monitoring tile de-formity using radiographs has known radiation hazards. An alternative approach for monitoring the deformity is to base the assessment on the shape of back surface. Though three-dimensional data acquisition methods exist, techniques to extract relevant information for clinical use have not been widely developed. Thi's thesis presentsthe content and progression of research into automated analysis and visu-alization of three-dimensional laser scans of the human back. Using mathematical shape analysis, methods have been developed to compute stable curvature of the back surface and to detect the anatomic landmarks from the curvature maps. Compared with manual palpation, the landmarks have been detected to within accuracy of 1.15mm and precision of 0.8111m.Based on the detected spinous process landmarks, the back midline which is the closest surface approximation of the spine, has been derived using constrained polynomial fitting and statistical techniques. Three-dimensional geometric measurementsbasedon the midline were then corn-puted to quantify the deformity. Visualization plays a crucial role in back shape analysis since it enables the exploration of back deformities without the need for physical manipulation of the subject. In the third phase,various visualization techniques have been developed, namely, continuous and discrete colour maps, contour maps and three-dimensional views. In the last phase of the research,a software system has been developed for automating the tasks involved in analysing, visualizing and quantifying of the back shape. The novel aspectsof this research lie in the development of effective noise smoothing methods for stable curvature computation; improved shape analysis and landmark detection algorithm; effective techniques for visualizing the shape of the back; derivation of the back midline using constrained polynomials and computation of three dimensional surface measurements.

    Enabling Technologies for Co-Robotic Translational Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging

    Among many medical imaging modalities, medical ultrasound possesses its unique advantages of non-ionizing, real-time, and non-invasive properties. With its safeness, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness, ultrasound imaging has been used in a wide variety of diagnostic applications. Photoacoustic imaging is a hybrid imaging modality merging light and ultrasound, and reveals the tissue metabolism and molecular distribution with the utilization of endo- and exogenous contrast agents. With the emergence of photoacoustic imaging, ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging can comprehensively depict not only anatomical but also functional information of biological tissue. To broaden the impact of translational ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging, this dissertation focuses on the development of enabling technologies and the exploration of associated applications. The goals of these technologies are; (1) Enabling Technologies for Translational Photoacoustic Imaging. We investigated the potential of maximizing the access to translational photoacoustic imaging using a clinical ultrasound scanner and a low-cost light source, instead of widely used customized data acquisition system and expensive high power laser. (2) Co-robotic Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging. We introduced a co-robotic paradigm to make ultrasound/photoacoustic imaging more comprehensive and capable of imaging deeper with higher resolution and wider field-of-view.(3) Advancements on Translational Photoacoustic Imaging. We explored the new use of translational photoacoustic imaging for molecular-based cancer detection and the sensing of neurotransmitter activity in the brain.     Medical robots with potential applications in participatory and opportunistic remote sensing: A review

    Among numerous applications of medical robotics, this paper concentrates on the design, optimal use and maintenance of the related technologies in the context of healthcare, rehabilitation and assistive robotics, and provides a comprehensive review of the latest advancements in the foregoing field of science and technology, while extensively dealing with the possible applications of participatory and opportunistic mobile sensing in the aforementioned domains. The main motivation for the latter choice is the variety of such applications in the settings having partial contributions to functionalities such as artery, radiosurgery, neurosurgery and vascular intervention. From a broad perspective, the aforementioned applications can be realized via various strategies and devices benefiting from detachable drives, intelligent robots, human-centric sensing and computing, miniature and micro-robots. Throughout the paper tens of subjects, including sensor-fusion, kinematic, dynamic and 3D tissue models are discussed based on the existing literature on the state-of-the-art technologies. In addition, from a managerial perspective, topics such as safety monitoring, security, privacy and evolutionary optimization of the operational efficiency are reviewed
