Effective video multicast over wireless internet
With the rapid growth of wireless networks and great success of Internet video, wireless video services are expected to be widely deployed in the near future. As different types of wireless networks are converging into all IP networks, i.e., the Internet, it is important to study video delivery over the wireless Internet. This paper proposes a novel end-system based adaptation protocol calledWireless Hybrid Adaptation Layered Multicast (WHALM) protocol for layered video multicast over wireless Internet. In WHALM the sender dynamically collects bandwidth distribution from the receivers and uses an optimal layer rate allocation mechanism to reduce the mismatches between the coarse-grained layer subscription levels and the heterogeneous and dynamic rate requirements from the receivers, thus maximizing the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers in a multicast session. Based on sampling theory and theory of probability, we reduce the required number of bandwidth feedbacks to a reasonable degree and use a scalable feedback mechanism to control the feedback process practically. WHALM is also tuned to perform well in wireless networks by integrating an end-to-end loss differentiation algorithm (LDA) to differentiate error losses from congestion losses at the receiver side. With a series of simulation experiments over NS platform, WHALM has been proved to be able to greatly improve the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers while avoiding congestion collapse on the wireless Internet
Simultaneous Transmission and Reception: Algorithm, Design and System Level Performance
Full Duplex or Simultaneous transmission and reception (STR) in the same
frequency at the same time can potentially double the physical layer capacity.
However, high power transmit signal will appear at receive chain as echoes with
powers much higher than the desired received signal. Therefore, in order to
achieve the potential gain, it is imperative to cancel these echoes. As these
high power echoes can saturate low noise amplifier (LNA) and also digital
domain echo cancellation requires unrealistically high resolution
analog-to-digital converter (ADC), the echoes should be cancelled or suppressed
sufficiently before LNA. In this paper we present a closed-loop echo
cancellation technique which can be implemented purely in analogue domain. The
advantages of our method are multiple-fold: it is robust to phase noise, does
not require additional set of antennas, can be applied to wideband signals and
the performance is irrelevant to radio frequency (RF) impairments in transmit
chain. Next, we study a few protocols for STR systems in carrier sense multiple
access (CSMA) network and investigate MAC level throughput with realistic
assumptions in both single cell and multiple cells. We show that STR can reduce
hidden node problem in CSMA network and produce gains of up to 279% in maximum
throughput in such networks. Finally, we investigate the application of STR in
cellular systems and study two new unique interferences introduced to the
system due to STR, namely BS-BS interference and UE-UE interference. We show
that these two new interferences will hugely degrade system performance if not
treated appropriately. We propose novel methods to reduce both interferences

Fast micro-differential evolution for topological active net optimization
This paper studies the optimization problem of topological active net (TAN), which is often seen in image segmentation and shape modeling. A TAN is a topological structure containing many nodes, whose positions must be optimized while a predefined topology needs to be maintained. TAN optimization is often time-consuming and even constructing a single solution is hard to do. Such a problem is usually approached by a ``best improvement local search'' (BILS) algorithm based on deterministic search (DS), which is inefficient because it spends too much efforts in nonpromising probing. In this paper, we propose the use of micro-differential evolution (DE) to replace DS in BILS for improved directional guidance. The resultant algorithm is termed deBILS. Its micro-population efficiently utilizes historical information for potentially promising search directions and hence improves efficiency in probing. Results show that deBILS can probe promising neighborhoods for each node of a TAN. Experimental tests verify that deBILS offers substantially higher search speed and solution quality not only than ordinary BILS, but also the genetic algorithm and scatter search algorithm
The Relative Costs of Local Telephony Across Five Countries
In this paper we take three steps towards evaluating the relative performanceof the telecommunications markets in these five countries. First weidentify and then limit our examination to only those components of thetelecommunications network that may generate market power concerns. Wedetermine that market power concerns where they exist at all are limited tothose facilities connecting a customer with its neighboring central officecollectively called the local loop. Second we identify regional factors that maysignificantly affect relative costs for the local loop. Using data and a cost modelfrom the US to examine these regional factors we find that customer density is the most significant. Third using this same cost model along with regional data we estimate local loop costs relative to the US for New Zealand Australia the UK and Sweden
