    Adolescent technology usage during sleep-time: does it influence their quality of sleep, attention difficulties and academic performance?

    Many adolescents use the Internet, cell phones, television, and computer and video games on a daily basis. Therefore, an important question for educators is: how is technology affecting adolescents\u27 quality and quantity of sleep, their attention difficulties, and their academic performance? The purpose of the current project was to examine the relationships between adolescent self-reports of technology usage, sleep patterns, attention difficulties and academic achievement. Results indicated that nocturnal technology use has a negative impact on adolescents\u27 quality and quantity of sleep. Furthermore both technology use in general and reported attention difficulties have a negative impact on adolescents\u27 academic achievement. Finally, general technology use was not found to have a significant impact on adolescents\u27 academic achievement or reported sleep quantity. Since technology is such an integral part of most adolescents\u27 lives, it is important to understand the impact it has on their sleep, attention difficulties and academic achievement

Devices used to create our “smart home” have done a great deal in making our lives at home less burdensome, but sadly, these devices have secured our personal lives to be more accessible to outsiders. In this paper, the security of home smart devices and their communication will be researched by using other academic articles to support facts found. The operation of the devices will be discussed along with security risks and future trends on security attacks. The results found will be crucial to knowing exactly how well our own home is protected. After understanding where the risks lie and a demonstration of how hackers can take control of our smart home, solutions will be given to shield ourselves from security attacks. We protect our homes from physical threats by locking doors, but it is time we guard ourselves from cyber threats as well

    Assessing the Information Literacy Skills Among Undergraduate Students at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, Ghana

    Information literacy skills have become a topical issue in the academic lives of university students. It is a skill needed to be able to identify an information need, knowing the sources of information, effectively searching for information and ethically using information in this era of the information age. Various studies have observed that university students lack the basic skills needed to make them effectively search for academic information and how to apply them. This situation, if not checked, would negatively affect the academic lives of students. This paper, therefore, sought to examine the level of information literacy skills among incoming first-year undergraduate students of the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa so as to suggest ways of improving upon them. The level of information literacy skill, possession of basic information and communication technology (ICT) skills, awareness of various search strategies were examined by analyzing responses obtained from the administration of the questionnaire. It was found out that the majority of the students possessed basic ICT skills, however, their knowledge of various search strategies was low. Again, there was no course designed to introduce them to the acquisition of information retrieval skills. Various ways of improving information literacy skills among students have also been suggested

    Over the past decade, the video camera has become a commonplace household technology. With falling prices on compact and easy-to-use cameras, as well as mobile phones and digital still cameras with video recording capabilities, access to moving image production technology is becoming virtually universal. Home Truths? represents one of the few academic research studies exploring this everyday, popular use of video production technology, looking particularly at how families use and engage with the technology and how it fits into the routines of everyday life. The authors draw on interviews, observations, and the participants' videos themselves, seeking to paint a comprehensive picture of the role of video making in their everyday lives. While readers gain a sense of the individual characters involved in the project and the complexities and diversities of their lives, the analysis also raises a range of broader issues about the nature of learning and creativity, subjectivity and representation, and the ""domestication"" of technology—issues that are of interest to many in the fields of sociology and media/cultural studies

    The article describes how the library team supporting the Faculty of Organisation and Management at Sheffield Hallam University (O&M Library team) developed and delivered a new information literacy initiative for the undergraduate Business and Management first year cohort. Research has shown that although the Net Generation confidently uses technology to acquire information, little care is taken to judge the quality and accuracy of the resources they find. In addition, there is little understanding of how shallow their information seeking behaviours actually are. This causes difficulties in their academic studies and in their professional lives. Further research suggested that an active learning approach would be the most appropriate for this initiative. Technological limitations imposed by the teaching space and time constraints imposed by the faculty led the O&M Library team to develop an initiative that comprised a modular, practical, active learning approach that could be delivered by any academic librarian, regardless of subject speciality, in any teaching space. This article details the initiative and its components, particularly the modular activities, including a Google based icebreaker, an information behaviour typology using animals, and examples of different types of business information. It also shares the positive feedback from lecturers and students and describes possible enhancements that the team will include in the next iteration of this programme
