    A review of multi-component maintenance models with economic dependence

    In this paper we review the literature on multi-component maintenance models with economic dependence. The emphasis is on papers that appeared after 1991, but there is an overlap with Section 2 of the most recent review paper by Cho and Parlar (1991). We distinguish between stationary models, where a long-term stable situation is assumed, and dynamic models, which can take information into account that becomes available only on the short term. Within the stationary models we choose a classification scheme that is primarily based on the various options of grouping maintenance activities: grouping either corrective or preventive maintenance, or combining preventive-maintenance actions with corrective actions. As such, this classification links up with the possibilities for grouped maintenance activities that exist in practice

    Analysis of consignment contracts for spare parts inventory systems

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.We study a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) partnership between a manufacturer and a retailer. More specifically, we consider a consignment contract, under which the manufacturer assumes the ownership of the inventory in retailer’s premises until the goods are sold, the retailer pays an annual fee to the manufacturer and the manufacturer pays the retailer backorder penalties. The main motivation of this research is our experience with a capital equipment manufacturer that manages the spare parts (for its systems) inventory of its customers in their stock rooms. We consider three factors that may potentially improve the supply chain efficiency under such a partnership: i-) reduction in inventory ownership costs (per unit holding cost) ii-) reduction in replenishment lead time and iii-) joint replenishment of multiple retailer installations. We consider two cases. In the first case, there are no setup costs; the retailer (before the contract) and the manufacturer (after the contract) both manage the stock following an (S − 1, S) policy. In the second case, there are setup costs; the retailer manages its inventories independently following an (r, Q) policy before the contract, and the manufacturer manages inventories of multiple retailer installations jointly following a (Q, S) policy. Through an extensive numerical study, we investigate the impact of the physical improvements above and the backorder penalties charged by the retailer on the total cost and the efficiency of the supply chain.Latifoğlu, ÇağrıM.S

    Theory and Practice of Supply Chain Synchronization

    In this dissertation, we develop strategies to synchronize component procurement in assemble-to-order (ATO) production and overhaul operations. We focus on the high-tech and mass customization industries which are not only considered to be very important to create or keep U.S. manufacturing jobs, but also suffer most from component inventory burden. In the second chapter, we address the deterministic joint replenishment inventory problem with batch size constraints (JRPB). We characterize system regeneration points, derive a closed-form expression of the average product inventory, and formulate the problem of finding the optimal joint reorder interval to minimize inventory and ordering costs per unit of time. Thereafter, we discuss exact solution approaches and the case of variable reorder intervals. Computational examples demonstrate the power of our methodology. In the third chapter, we incorporate stochastic demand to the JRPB. We propose a joint part replenishment policy that balances inventory and ordering costs while providing a desired service level. A case study and guided computational experiments show the magnitudes of savings that are possible using our methodology. In the fourth chapter, we show how lack of synchronization in assembly systems with long and highly variable component supply lead times can rapidly deteriorate system performance. We develop a full synchronization strategy through time buffering of component orders, which not only guarantees meeting planned production dates but also drastically reduces inventory holding costs. A case study has been carried out to prove the practical relevance, assess potential risks, and evaluate phased implementation policies. The fifth chapter explores the use of condition information from a large number of distributed working units in the field to improve the management of the inventory of spare parts required to maintain those units. Synchronization is again paramount here since spare part inventory needs to adapt to the condition of the engine fleet. All needed parts must be available to complete the overhaul of a unit. We develop a complex simulation environment to assess the performance of different inventory policies and the value of health monitoring.     Minimizing food waste in grocery store operations: literature review and research agenda

    Research on grocery waste in food retailing has recently attracted particular interest. Investigations in this area are relevant to address the problems of wasted resources and ethical concerns, as well as economic aspects from the retailer’s perspective. Reasons for food waste in retail are already well-studied empirically, and based on this, proposals for reduction are discussed. However, comprehensive approaches for preventing food waste in store operations using analytics and modeling methods are scarce. No work has yet systematized related research in this domain. As a result, there is neither any up-to-date literature review nor any agenda for future research. We contribute with the first structured literature review of analytics and modeling methods dealing with food waste prevention in retail store operations. This work identifies cross-cutting store-related planning areas to mitigate food waste, namely (1) assortment and shelf space planning, (2) replenishment policies, and (3) dynamic pricing policies. We introduce a common classification scheme of literature with regard to the depth of food waste integration and the characteristics of these planning problems. This builds our foundation to review analytics and modeling approaches. Current literature considers food waste mainly as a side effect in costing and often ignores product age dependent demand by customers. Furthermore, approaches are not integrated across planning areas. Future lines of research point to the most promising open questions in this field
