Learning flexibility: the environment and a case study
This paper outlines the flexible student learning environment in the Faculty of Engineering and Surveying, before concentrating on evaluating one online learning option. This Faculty provides a variety of high quality on-campus, distance education and on-line academic programmes and various learning strategies for the heterogeneous student cohort (national and international). By accessing appropriate flexible learning and different learning experiences, students are empowered to determine learning opportunities and methodologies to suit their personal needs.
The off-campus mode study may disadvantage students since they don’t have the benefit of face-to-face instructions or to participate in formative assessments delivered informally in lectures. This may lead to feelings of remoteness and isolation leading to poorer learning, lower results in assessments, and may also contribute to drop-out rates, particularly in first year courses. To overcome this inequity, the usual training materials presented for a first year course in 2005 were supplemented with PowerPoint lectures, enhanced with synchronous audio, and a series of quizzes to be used as formative assessments. The lectures and quizzes were presented online via a course web site and were designed to become an integral part of the learning experience. An evaluation of the effectiveness of these strategy demonstrated improved students' learning, a positive contribution to the learning experience, increased enjoyment of the course, and a strong learning motivator. Students reported feeling less disenfranchised with the university and having a greater affinity with the lecturer
UCL (University College London) Libraries Masterplan: Masterplanning Report
BDP were appointed to undertake a Masterplan for the UCL Main Library and the
UCL Science Library and to identify how these buildings could be re-ordered to
significantly improve the quality of the library environment and to facilitate the
delivery of library services.
An initial brief was agreed with UCL’s Estates Management Committee and a
Masterplan Steering Group established including academic representatives,
library staff and design consultants. To inform the development of this brief, UCL
Library Services undertook a number of consultation exercises with users of the
Library; students, academic staff and external users, together with Library staff.
A number of visits to exemplar library buildings in the UK and continental Europe
were also undertaken to inform the development of options for the buildings.
Following the development and review of initial options for both the Main Library
and Science Library, it was agreed a further, hypothetical New Build Central
Library Option should be reviewed, to accommodate a relocated and consolidated
library service encompassing 7 of the 16 existing libraries currently distributed
across the UCL Estate
Microalgae production in fresh market wastewater and its utilization as a protein substitute in formulated fish feed for oreochromis spp.
Rapid growing of human population has led to increasing demand of aquaculture production. Oreochromis niloticus or known as tilapia is one of the most globally cultured freshwater fish due to its great adaptation towards extreme environment. Besides, farming of tilapia not only involves small scales farming for local consumption but also larger scales for international market which contributes to a foreign currency earning. Extensive use of fishmeal as feed for fish and for other animals indirectly caused an increasing depletion of the natural resource and may consequently cause economic and environmental unstable. Microalgae biomass seems to be a promising feedstock in aquaculture industry. It can be used for many purposes such as live food for fish larvae and dried microalgae to substitute protein material in fish feed. The microalgae replacement in fish feed formulation as protein alternative seem potentially beneficial for long term aqua-business sustainability. Supporting community engagement through teaching, student projects and research
The Education Acts statutory obligations for ITPs are not supported by the Crown funding model. Part of the statutory role of an ITP is “... promotes community learning and by research, particularly applied and technological research ...” [The education act 1989]. In relation to this a 2017 TEC report highlighted impaired business models and an excessive administrative burden as restrictive and impeding success. Further restrictions are seen when considering ITPs attract < 3 % of the available TEC funding for research, and ~ 20 % available TEC funding for teaching, despite having overall student efts of ~ 26 % nationally.
An attempt to improve performance and engage through collaboration (community, industry, tertiary) at our institution is proving successful. The cross-disciplinary approach provides students high level experience and the technical stretch needed to be successful engineers, technologists and technicians.

The writer writes the final project report based on doing the job training.
The final project report discussed teaching vocabulary to the 4th grade students in
SDN Purwosuman 5 Sidoharjo Sragen. In writing final project report the writer
also collected the data by interviewing the teacher and the students, observing
class, and teaching directly in the classroom.
In doing the job training, the writer gave the material from the LKS and
followed what the teacher said to the writer. The writer also gave the material
such as concrete words (animal, fruit, shape, etc) because their level is the
Elementary School.
The final project report also discussed problems and solutions faced by the
writer when teaching vocabulary to the 4th grade students in SDN Purwosuman 5
