    Large-scale educational telecommunications systems for the US: An analysis of educational needs and technological opportunities

    The needs to be served, the subsectors in which the system might be used, the technology employed, and the prospects for future utilization of an educational telecommunications delivery system are described and analyzed. Educational subsectors are analyzed with emphasis on the current status and trends within each subsector. Issues which affect future development, and prospects for future use of media, technology, and large-scale electronic delivery within each subsector are included. Information on technology utilization is presented. Educational telecommunications services are identified and grouped into categories: public television and radio, instructional television, computer aided instruction, computer resource sharing, and information resource sharing. Technology based services, their current utilization, and factors which affect future development are stressed. The role of communications satellites in providing these services is discussed. Efforts to analyze and estimate future utilization of large-scale educational telecommunications are summarized. Factors which affect future utilization are identified. Conclusions are presented

    Development of a Comprehensive Digital Avionics Curriculum for the Aeronautical Engineer

    The purpose of this research was to develop a comprehensive digital avionics curriculum for aeronautical engineering students at AFIT. Due to the closing of the aeronautical engineering program at the Naval Postgraduate School, and the subsequent requirement to establish a digital avionics specialty course sequence at AFIT, a mature avionics curriculum does not yet exist that satisfies the needs of graduates who will serve as aeronautical engineers involved with the development, integration, testing, fielding, and supporting of military avionics systems as part of the overall aircraft system. Research was conducted through a comprehensive literature review and the use of a Delphi Technique survey process. 28 panel members representing the military, academe, and industry participated in a three round survey process that sought to identify the desired attributes of a newly graduated engineer and the specific subject areas of study that should be included within the avionics curriculum. The result of this research was the development of a proposed three course curriculum that will instill the desired attributes within the aeronautical engineers and provide them with the avionics knowledge required at the correct level of proficiency. Recommendations on how to implement the proposed curriculum in an effective and timely manner are presented

    Teaching embedded systems for energy harvesting applications: a comparison of teaching methods adopted in UESTC and KTH

    Further to China’s plan that was introduced in 2017 for attracting more students into engineering, many Chinese universities have started to explore new teaching methods that can be adopted into their programs. This shift was geared towards developing student-centred teaching materials rather than traditional teacher centred instruction. In this manuscript, we compare two different methods of instruction for a course on energy harvesting using embedded systems. We describe the learning materials and showcase the impact that project-based learning has had on a cohort of Chinese students that were enrolled in a joint master’s program between the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). KTH has made remarkable progress in the teaching of embedded systems technology for energy harvesting applications, with great emphasis on active as well as collaborative learning. We demonstrate two examples of projects that Chinese students have completed in KTH and present evaluative data regarding their experiences. Our results show that KTH’s approach in teaching this module has had a positive impact on student learning, with an average of 80% of students think that teaching in KTH is conducive to students’ independent exploration

    Journal ArticleThis paper describes an NSF-sponsored department level curriculum reform project in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Utah. The project focuses on developing system-level design projects (mostly labs, but a few software-only projects) that integrate ideas within a class, between classes, and in some cases between disciplines.
