    Teaching with infographics: practising new digital competencies and visual literacies

    This position paper examines the use of infographics as a teaching assignment in the online college classroom. It argues for the benefits of adopting this type of creative assignment for teaching and learning, and considers the pedagogic and technical challenges that may arise in doing so. Data and insights are drawn from two case studies, both from the communications field, one online class and a blended one, taught at two different institutions. The paper demonstrates how incorporating a research-based graphic design assignment into coursework challenges and encourages students' visual digital literacies. The paper includes practical insights and identifies best practices emerging from the authors' classroom experience with the infographic assignment, and from student feedback. The paper suggests that this kind of creative assignment requires students to practice exactly those digital competencies required to participate in an increasingly visual digital culture

    [Abstract]: Historically at USQ we have taught information literacy classes in a very traditional instructional format. The training labs have rows of seating facing forward, and large computer monitors in front of participants. The trainer stands at the front with a whiteboard and projection screen. With innovations in teaching styles and developments in learning spaces, we are this year initiating a change to information literacy classes. Traditional training labs and teaching styles have been replaced by collaborative group learning spaces and a guided teaching style. As part of a refurbishment project, one of our training labs and an office area of the library have been set up to support collaborative learning. Subsequently in Semester 1, 2009 we will begin using the new collaborative learning facilities for all generic information literacy classes, and some faculty classes. In the past our training has focussed on the transmission of information and we have not fully engaged our students in the learning process. We have used PowerPoint’s and the Library website to conduct classes. Whilst the basic information we want to impart to students will be the same, the way we do this and hopefully the learning outcomes will change significantly with the shift to a collaborative teaching style and environment

    Challenging Assumptions about IT skills in Higher Education

    This paper challenges the idea of 'the digital native' and the subsequent assumption of digital literacy skills amongst higher education students. It offers clear evidence that current student populations come from a wider range of backgrounds than the theory allows for and that the younger student population is also more complex with varying levels of digital literacy experience. It argues that treating students as a homogenous mass is problematic and challenges the idea that generic technology skills are instantly transferable to academic study. The paper concludes with a warning that we are letting down some of our students by the ‘Information Technology (IT) barrier’ within higher education and that we should be focusing on identification of Information Technology (IT) need and IT skills acquisition support rather than assuming it is something students can ‘pick up as they go along’. This will only happen once IT is given the status of a core academic skill along with maths, information literacy and academic communication

Due to the global nature of this channel of communication, the world has shrunk and members of the internet may share similar cultural norms of thinking and behaving. Yet, paradoxically, the Internet is personal in that each individual has an interactive opportunity in choosing the options that can expand the breadth and depth of the information they are reading, who they interact with, and the means to achieve that interaction.
