Group project work from the outset: an in-depth teaching experience report
This article is an extended version of a paper that was submitted to 24th IEEE Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training, Honolulu, May 2011CONTEXT - we redesigned our undergraduate computing programmes to address problems of motivation and outdated content.
METHOD - the primary vehicle for the new curriculum was the group project which formed a central spine for the entire degree right from the first year.
RESULTS - so far this programme has been successfully run once. Failures, drop outs and students required to retake modules have been halved (from an average of 21.6% from the previous 4 years to 9.5%) and students obtaining the top two grades have increased from 25.2% to 38.9%.
CONCLUSIONS - whilst we cannot be certain that all improvement is due to the group projects informally the change has been well received, however, we are looking for areas to improve including the possibility of more structured support for student metacognitive awareness

Going on-line on a shoestring: An experiment in concurrent development of requirements and architecture
A number of on-line applications were built for a small university using a micro-sized development team. Four ideas were tested during the project: the Twin Peaks development model, using fully functional prototypes in the requirements elicitation process, some core practices of Extreme Programming, and the use of open-source software in a production environment. Certain project management techniques and their application to a micro-sized development effort were also explored. These ideas and techniques proved effective in developing many significant Internet and networked applications in a short time and at very low cost
Early experiences of computer‐aided assessment and administration when teaching computer programming
This paper describes early experiences with the Ceilidh system currently being piloted at over 30 institutions of higher education. Ceilidh is a course‐management system for teaching computer programming whose core is an auto‐assessment facility. This facility automatically marks students programs from a range of perspectives, and may be used in an iterative manner, enabling students to work towards a target level of attainment. Ceilidh also includes extensive course‐administration and progress‐monitoring facilities, as well as support for other forms of assessment including short‐answer marking and the collation of essays for later hand‐marking. The paper discusses the motivation for developing Ceilidh, outlines its major facilities, then summarizes experiences of developing and actually using it at the coal‐face over three years of teaching
Introductory programming: a systematic literature review
As computing becomes a mainstream discipline embedded in the school curriculum and acts as an enabler for an increasing range of academic disciplines in higher education, the literature on introductory programming is growing. Although there have been several reviews that focus on specific aspects of introductory programming, there has been no broad overview of the literature exploring recent trends across the breadth of introductory programming.
This paper is the report of an ITiCSE working group that conducted a systematic review in order to gain an overview of the introductory programming literature. Partitioning the literature into papers addressing the student, teaching, the curriculum, and assessment, we explore trends, highlight advances in knowledge over the past 15 years, and indicate possible directions for future research
Project based learning on industrial informatics: applying IoT to urban garden

trade content off for self-learning. PBL is one of the best ways
to promote self-learning and simultaneously boost motivation. In
this paper, we present our experience introducing project-based
learning in the last year subject. New Internet of Things (IoT) topic
allows us to carry out complete projects, integrating different
technologies and tools. Moreover, the selection of open-source and
standard free technologies makes easy and cheap the access to
hardware and software platforms used. We carefully have picked
communication, data management, and programming tools that
we think would be attractive to our students. They can start
making fast prototyping with little initial skills and, at the same
time, these are serious and popular tools widely used in the
industry. In this paper, we report on the design of a project-based
learning for our course and the impact this has on the
student satisfaction and motivation. Surveys taught us that tuning
the courses towards developing real projects on the field, has a
large impact on acceptance, learning objectives achievements and
