A Software Radio Challenge Accelerating Education and Innovation in Wireless Communications
This Innovative Practice Full Paper presents our methodology and tools for
introducing competition in the electrical engineering curriculum to accelerate
education and innovation in wireless communications. Software radio or
software-defined radio (SDR) enables wireless technology, systems and standards
education where the student acts as the radio developer or engineer. This is
still a huge endeavor because of the complexity of current wireless systems and
the diverse student backgrounds. We suggest creating a competition among
student teams to potentiate creativity while leveraging the SDR development
methodology and open-source tools to facilitate cooperation. The proposed
student challenge follows the European UEFA Champions League format, which
includes a qualification phase followed by the elimination round or playoffs.
The students are tasked to build an SDR transmitter and receiver following the
guidelines of the long-term evolution standard. The metric is system
performance. After completing this course, the students will be able to (1)
analyze alternative radio design options and argue about their benefits and
drawbacks and (2) contribute to the evolution of wireless standards. We discuss
our experiences and lessons learned with particular focus on the suitability of
the proposed teaching and evaluation methodology and conclude that competition

Designing experiments using digital fabrication in structural dynamics
In engineering, traditional approaches aimed at teaching concepts of dynamics to engineering students include the study of a dense yet sequential theoretical development of proofs and exercises. Structural dynamics are seldom taught experimentally in laboratories since these facilities should be provided with expensive equipment such as wave generators, data-acquisition systems, and heavily wired deployments with sensors. In this paper, the design of an experimental experience in the classroom based upon digital fabrication and modeling tools related to structural dynamics is presented. In particular, all experimental deployments are conceived with low-cost, open-source equipment. The hardware includes Arduino-based open-source electronics whereas the software is based upon object-oriented open-source codes for the development of physical simulations. Improving the Quality of Technology-Enhanced Learning for Computer Programming Courses
Teaching computing courses is a major challenge for the majority of lecturers in Libyan higher learning institutions. These courses contain numerous abstract concepts that cannot be easily explained using traditional educational methods. This paper describes the rationale, design, development and implementation stages of an e-learning package (including multimedia resources such as simulations, animations, and videos) using the ASSURE model. This training package can be used by students before they attend practical computer lab sessions, preparing them by developing technical skills and applying concepts and theories presented in lecture through supplementary study and exercises
Practicing at Home: Computers, Pianos, and Cultural Capital
Part of the Volume on Digital Young, Innovation, and the Unexpected Bourdieu focused attention on the role of education and the influence of status distinctions on the selection and valorization of particular forms of cultural capital. Although Bourdieu did not write about digital media, he was a keen observer of status distinctions in education and how these translate into job markets. Through an extended analogy between learning the piano and learning the computer, I demonstrate Bourdieu's relevance for an expanded vision of digital literacy -- one that would forefront the material and social inequalities in U.S. domestic Internet access and in public education. High Tech High School, supported by the Gates Foundation, provides a case of why it is important to examine current digital pedagogy in terms of unarticulated and implicit models of entrepreneurial labor, both because these set up unrealistic expectations and because they can express corporate norms rather than critical pedagogy
Digital, memory and mixed-signal test engineering education: five centres of competence in Europe
The launching of the EuNICE-Test project was announced two years ago at the first DELTA Conference. This project is now completed and the present paper describes the project actions and outcomes. The original idea was to build a long-lasting European Network for test engineering education using both test resource mutualisation and remote experiments. This objective is fully fulfilled and we have now, in Europe, five centres of competence able to deliver high-level and high-specialized training courses in the field of test engineering using a high-performing industrial ATE. All the centres propose training courses on digital testing, three of them propose mixed-signal trainings and three of them propose memory trainings. Taking into account the demand in test engineering, the network is planned to continue in a stand alone mode after project end. Nevertheless a new European proposal with several new partners and new test lessons is under construction
