Keeping Nine Eyes on the Weather

    Get PDF
This classroom activity explains how clouds and pollution in the atmosphere are important to climate, and the need to study whether pollution may be changing Earth's climate in undesirable ways. It introduces NASA's Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) mission. The activity includes building a MISR-lite model to demonstrate how looking at the same thing (i.e., Earth's atmosphere) from different angles produces a 3-dimensional effect that gives much more information than just viewing it from one angle and helps scientists establish a baseline of information about current conditions in the atmosphere. The activity was originally published in Technology Teacher, a magazine published by the International Technology Education Association (ITEA). Educational levels: Middle school

    Carbon in soils

    Get PDF
Carbon is the fourth most common element in the galaxy(by mass) but does not even rank in the twelve most abundant elements on Earth. By far the most abundant source of carbon on Earth is in the crust as inorganic rocks such as calcite and limestone in marine and sedimentary deposits. These rocks have taken many millions of years to form. Other major inorganic sources are in the oceans and atmosphere

Fermi Paper Model (Formerly GLAST Paper Model)

    Get PDF
This paper model provides a short description of the scientific instruments on board GLAST as well as links to other resources about the GLAST instruments. There is also a short description of how GLAST detects gamma-rays with the Large Area Telescope as well as the GLAST Burst Monitor detectors. The product includes three pages of parts that can be cut out and easily assembled using common household items. Note: In 2008, the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) was renamed Fermi, for the physicist Enrico Fermi. Educational levels: Informal education, General public

    Lifelong science learning

    Get PDF
The author discusses the incorporation of lifelong learning in the study of science in New Zealand. He explains two preliminary thoughts related to the creation of a setting for lifelong learning in the field of science including the sustained enrichment necessary to enhance school science experiences of students. He also explores three major capabilities such as the understanding of the nature of science and engaging in socio-scientific issues that lifelong learning might entail

    Nitrogen, soils and environment

The article discusses the risk of damaging the environment brought by nitrogen fertilisers which are used for increasing agricultural productivity. The oxidation of ammonium allows for the formation of nitrate. Troposphere ozone and aerosols are produced through the increase of reactive nitrogen in the atmosphere
