    Teach-and-repeat path following for an autonomous underwater vehicle

    This paper presents a teach-and-repeat path-following method for an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) navigating long distances in environments where external navigation aides are denied. This method utilizes sonar images to construct a series of reference views along a path,stored as a topological map. The AUV can then renavigate along this path, either to return to the start location or to repeat the route. Utilizing unique assumptions about the sonar image-generation process, this system exhibits robust image-matching capabilities, providing observations to a discrete Bayesian filter that maintains an estimate of progress along the path. Image-matching also provides an estimate of offset from the path, allowing the AUV to correct its heading and effectively close the gap. Over a series of field trials, this system demonstrated online control of an AUV in the ocean environment of Holyrood Arm, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The system was implemented on an International Submarine Engineering Ltd. Explorer AUV and per-formed multiple path completions over both a 1 and 5 km track. These trials illustrated an AUV operating in a fully autonomous mode, in which navigation was driven solely by sensor feedback and adaptive control. The definitive version was published in Journal of Field Robotics 33 (2016): 994-1012, doi:10.1002/rob.21640.In this field note we detail the operations and discuss the results of an experiment conducted in the unstructured environment of an underwater cave complex, using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). For this experiment the AUV was equipped with two acoustic sonar to simultaneously map the caves’ horizontal and vertical surfaces. Although the caves’ spatial complexity required AUV guidance by a diver, this field deployment successfully demonstrates a scan matching algorithm in a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework that significantly reduces and bounds the localization error for fully autonomous navigation.     Progressive Underwater Exploration with a Corridor-Based Navigation System

    The present work focuses on the exploration of underwater environments by means of autonomous submarines like AUVs using vision-based navigation. An approach called Corridor SLAM (C-SLAM) was developed for this purpose. It implements a global exploration strategy that consists of first creating a trunk corridor on the seabed and then branching as far as possible in different directions to increase the explored region. The system guarantees the safe return of the vehicle to the starting point by taking into account a metric of the corridor lengths that are related to their energy autonomy. Experimental trials in a basin with underwater scenarios demonstrated the feasibility of the approach

    Field Testing of a Stochastic Planner for ASV Navigation Using Satellite Images

    We introduce a multi-sensor navigation system for autonomous surface vessels (ASV) intended for water-quality monitoring in freshwater lakes. Our mission planner uses satellite imagery as a prior map, formulating offline a mission-level policy for global navigation of the ASV and enabling autonomous online execution via local perception and local planning modules. A significant challenge is posed by the inconsistencies in traversability estimation between satellite images and real lakes, due to environmental effects such as wind, aquatic vegetation, shallow waters, and fluctuating water levels. Hence, we specifically modelled these traversability uncertainties as stochastic edges in a graph and optimized for a mission-level policy that minimizes the expected total travel distance. To execute the policy, we propose a modern local planner architecture that processes sensor inputs and plans paths to execute the high-level policy under uncertain traversability conditions. Our system was tested on three km-scale missions on a Northern Ontario lake, demonstrating that our GPS-, vision-, and sonar-enabled ASV system can effectively execute the mission-level policy and disambiguate the traversability of stochastic edges. Finally, we provide insights gained from practical field experience and offer several future directions to enhance the overall reliability of ASV navigation systems.Comment: 33 pages, 20 figures.     Design and testing of a position adaptation system for KUKA robots using photoelectric sensors

    This thesis presents the development and analysis of a position monitoring and adaptation system to be used in conjunction with a KUKA KR16-2 articulated robot using components readily available in most manufacturing settings. This system could be beneficial in the manufacturing sector in areas such as polymer welding and spray painting. In the former it could be used to maintain an effective distance between a welding end effector laying molten plastic and the surface area of the parts being welded, or in the case of the latter the system would be useful in painting objects of unknown shape or objects with unknown variations in the surface level. In the case of spray painting if you spray to close to an object you will get an inconsistent amount of paint applied to an area. This system would maintain the programmed distance between the robot system and target object. Typically, systems that achieve this level of control rely on expensive sensors such as force torque sensors. This research proposes to take the first step in trying to address the technical problems by introducing a novel way of adapting to a target surface deformation using comparably low cost photoelectric diffuse sensors. The key outcomes of this thesis can be found in the form of a software package to interface the photo-electric sensors to the KUKA robot system. This system is operated by a custom-built algorithm which is capable of dynamically calculating robot movements based off the sensor input. Additionally, an optimum system setup is developed with different configurations of sensor mounting and speeds of robot operation discussed and tested. The viability of the photo-electric diffuses sensors used in this application is also considered with further works suggested. Finally, a secondary application is developed for recording and analysing KUKA robot movements for use in other research activities

    Augmented Terrain-Based Navigation to Enable Persistent Autonomy for Underwater Vehicles in GPS-Denied Environments

    Aquatic robots, such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), play a major role in the study of ocean processes that require long-term sampling efforts and commonly perform navigation via dead-reckoning using an accelerometer, a magnetometer, a compass, an IMU and a depth sensor for feedback. However, these instruments are subjected to large drift, leading to unbounded uncertainty in location. Moreover, the spatio-temporal dynamics of the ocean environment, coupled with limited communication capabilities, make navigation and localization difficult, especially in coastal regions where the majority of interesting phenomena occur. To add to this, the interesting features are themselves spatio-temporally dynamic, and effective sampling requires a good understanding of vehicle localization relative to the sampled feature. Therefore, our work is motivated by the desire to enable intelligent data collection of complex dynamics and processes that occur in coastal ocean environments to further our understanding and prediction capabilities. The study originated from the need to localize and navigate aquatic robots in a GPS-denied environment and examine the role of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the ocean into the localization and navigation processes. The methods and techniques needed range from the data collection to the localization and navigation algorithms used on-board of the aquatic vehicles. The focus of this work is to develop algorithms for localization and navigation of AUVs in GPS-denied environments. We developed an Augmented terrain-based framework that incorporates physical science data, i.e., temperature, salinity, pH, etc., to enhance the topographic map that the vehicle uses to navigate. In this navigation scheme, the bathymetric data are combined with the physical science data to enrich the uniqueness of the underlying terrain map and increase the accuracy of underwater localization. Another technique developed in this work addresses the problem of tracking an underwater vehicle when the GPS signal suddenly becomes unavailable. The methods include the whitening of the data to reveal the true statistical distance between datapoints and also incorporates physical science data to enhance the topographic map. Simulations were performed at Lake Nighthorse, Colorado, USA, between April 25th and May 2nd 2018 and at Big Fisherman\u27s Cove, Santa Catalina Island, California, USA, on July 13th and July 14th 2016. Different missions were executed on different environments (snow, rain and the presence of plumes). Results showed that these two methodologies for localization and tracking work for reference maps that had been recorded within a week and the accuracy on the average error in localization can be compared to the errors found when using GPS if the time in which the observations were taken are the same period of the day (morning, afternoon or night). The whitening of the data had positive results when compared to localizing without whitening
