    SCALABLE TECHNIQUES FOR SCHEDULING AND MAPPING DSP APPLICATIONS ONTO EMBEDDED MULTIPROCESSOR PLATFORMS

    A variety of multiprocessor architectures has proliferated even for off-the-shelf computing platforms. To make use of these platforms, traditional implementation frameworks focus on implementing Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications using special platform features to achieve high performance. However, due to the fast evolution of the underlying architectures, solution redevelopment is error prone and re-usability of existing solutions and libraries is limited. In this thesis, we facilitate an efficient migration of DSP systems to multiprocessor platforms while systematically leveraging previous investment in optimized library kernels using dataflow design frameworks. We make these library elements, which are typically tailored to specialized architectures, more amenable to extensive analysis and optimization using an efficient and systematic process. In this thesis we provide techniques to allow such migration through four basic contributions: 1. We propose and develop a framework to explore efficient utilization of Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) cores and accelerators available in heterogeneous multiprocessor platforms consisting of General Purpose Processors (GPPs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). We also propose new scheduling techniques by applying extensive block processing in conjunction with appropriate task mapping and task ordering methods that match efficiently with the underlying architecture. The approach gives the developer the ability to prototype a GPU-accelerated application and explore its design space efficiently and effectively. 2. We introduce the concept of Partial Expansion Graphs (PEGs) as an implementation model and associated class of scheduling strategies. PEGs are designed to help realize DSP systems in terms of forms and granularities of parallelism that are well matched to the given applications and targeted platforms. PEGs also facilitate derivation of both static and dynamic scheduling techniques, depending on the amount of variability in task execution times and other operating conditions. We show how to implement efficient PEG-based scheduling methods using real time operating systems, and to re-use pre-optimized libraries of DSP components within such implementations. 3. We develop new algorithms for scheduling and mapping systems implemented using PEGs. Collectively, these algorithms operate in three steps. First, the amount of data parallelism in the application graph is tuned systematically over many iterations to profit from the available cores in the target platform. Then a mapping algorithm that uses graph analysis is developed to distribute data and task parallel instances over different cores while trying to balance the load of all processing units to make use of pipeline parallelism. Finally, we use a novel technique for performance evaluation by implementing the scheduler and a customizable solution on the programmable platform. This allows accurate fitness functions to be measured and used to drive runtime adaptation of schedules. 4. In addition to providing scheduling techniques for the mentioned applications and platforms, we also show how to integrate the resulting solution in the underlying environment. This is achieved by leveraging existing libraries and applying the GPP-GPU scheduling framework to augment a popular existing Software Defined Radio (SDR) development environment -- GNU Radio -- with a dataflow foundation and a stand-alone GPU-accelerated library. We also show how to realize the PEG model on real time operating system libraries, such as the Texas Instruments DSP/BIOS. A code generator that accepts a manual system designer solution as well as automatically configured solutions is provided to complete the design flow starting from application model to running system

    Improving the scalability of parallel N-body applications with an event driven constraint based execution model

    The scalability and efficiency of graph applications are significantly constrained by conventional systems and their supporting programming models. Technology trends like multicore, manycore, and heterogeneous system architectures are introducing further challenges and possibilities for emerging application domains such as graph applications. This paper explores the space of effective parallel execution of ephemeral graphs that are dynamically generated using the Barnes-Hut algorithm to exemplify dynamic workloads. The workloads are expressed using the semantics of an Exascale computing execution model called ParalleX. For comparison, results using conventional execution model semantics are also presented. We find improved load balancing during runtime and automatic parallelism discovery improving efficiency using the advanced semantics for Exascale computing.Comment: 11 figure

    MULTI-SCALE SCHEDULING TECHNIQUES FOR SIGNAL PROCESSING SYSTEMS

    A variety of hardware platforms for signal processing has emerged, from distributed systems such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) to parallel systems such as Multicore Programmable Digital Signal Processors (PDSPs), Multicore General Purpose Processors (GPPs), and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to heterogeneous combinations of parallel and distributed devices. When a signal processing application is implemented on one of those platforms, the performance critically depends on the scheduling techniques, which in general allocate computation and communication resources for competing processing tasks in the application to optimize performance metrics such as power consumption, throughput, latency, and accuracy. Signal processing systems implemented on such platforms typically involve multiple levels of processing and communication hierarchy, such as network-level, chip-level, and processor-level in a structural context, and application-level, subsystem-level, component-level, and operation- or instruction-level in a behavioral context. In this thesis, we target scheduling issues that carefully address and integrate scheduling considerations at different levels of these structural and behavioral hierarchies. The core contributions of the thesis include the following. Considering both the network-level and chip-level, we have proposed an adaptive scheduling algorithm for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) designed for event detection. Our algorithm exploits discrepancies among the detection accuracy of individual sensors, which are derived from a collaborative training process, to allow each sensor to operate in a more energy efficient manner while the network satisfies given constraints on overall detection accuracy. Considering the chip-level and processor-level, we incorporated both temperature and process variations to develop new scheduling methods for throughput maximization on multicore processors. In particular, we studied how to process a large number of threads with high speed and without violating a given maximum temperature constraint. We targeted our methods to multicore processors in which the cores may operate at different frequencies and different levels of leakage. We develop speed selection and thread assignment schedulers based on the notion of a core's steady state temperature. Considering the application-level, component-level and operation-level, we developed a new dataflow based design flow within the targeted dataflow interchange format (TDIF) design tool. Our new multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC)-oriented design flow, called TDIF-PPG, is geared towards analysis and mapping of embedded DSP applications on MPSoCs. An important feature of TDIF-PPG is its capability to integrate graph level parallelism and actor level parallelism into the application mapping process. Here, graph level parallelism is exposed by the dataflow graph application representation in TDIF, and actor level parallelism is modeled by a novel model for multiprocessor dataflow graph implementation that we call the Parallel Processing Group (PPG) model. Building on the contribution above, we formulated a new type of parallel task scheduling problem called Parallel Actor Scheduling (PAS) for chip-level MPSoC mapping of DSP systems that are represented as synchronous dataflow (SDF) graphs. In contrast to traditional SDF-based scheduling techniques, which focus on exploiting graph level (inter-actor) parallelism, the PAS problem targets the integrated exploitation of both intra- and inter-actor parallelism for platforms in which individual actors can be parallelized across multiple processing units. We address a special case of the PAS problem in which all of the actors in the DSP application or subsystem being optimized can be parallelized. For this special case, we develop and experimentally evaluate a two-phase scheduling framework with three work flows --- particle swarm optimization with a mixed integer programming formulation, particle swarm optimization with a simulated annealing engine, and particle swarm optimization with a fast heuristic based on list scheduling. Then, we extend our scheduling framework to support general PAS problem which considers the actors cannot be parallelized

    Intel Concurrent Collections for Haskell

    Intel Concurrent Collections (CnC) is a parallel programming model in which a network of steps (functions) communicate through message-passing as well as a limited form of shared memory. This paper describes a new implementation of CnC for Haskell. Compared to existing parallel programming models for Haskell, CnC occupies a useful point in the design space: pure and deterministic like Evaluation Strategies, but more explicit about granularity and the structure of the parallel computation, which affords the programmer greater control over parallel performance. We present results on 4, 8, and 32-core machines demonstrating parallel speedups over 20x on non-trivial benchmarks

    Dynamic Task Execution on Shared and Distributed Memory Architectures

    Multicore architectures with high core counts have come to dominate the world of high performance computing, from shared memory machines to the largest distributed memory clusters. The multicore route to increased performance has a simpler design and better power efficiency than the traditional approach of increasing processor frequencies. But, standard programming techniques are not well adapted to this change in computer architecture design. In this work, we study the use of dynamic runtime environments executing data driven applications as a solution to programming multicore architectures. The goals of our runtime environments are productivity, scalability and performance. We demonstrate productivity by defining a simple programming interface to express code. Our runtime environments are experimentally shown to be scalable and give competitive performance on large multicore and distributed memory machines. This work is driven by linear algebra algorithms, where state-of-the-art libraries (e.g., LAPACK and ScaLAPACK) using a fork-join or block-synchronous execution style do not use the available resources in the most efficient manner. Research work in linear algebra has reformulated these algorithms as tasks acting on tiles of data, with data dependency relationships between the tasks. This results in a task-based DAG for the reformulated algorithms, which can be executed via asynchronous data-driven execution paths analogous to dataflow execution. We study an API and runtime environment for shared memory architectures that efficiently executes serially presented tile based algorithms. This runtime is used to enable linear algebra applications and is shown to deliver performance competitive with state-of- the-art commercial and research libraries. We develop a runtime environment for distributed memory multicore architectures extended from our shared memory implementation. The runtime takes serially presented algorithms designed for the shared memory environment, and schedules and executes them on distributed memory architectures in a scalable and high performance manner. We design a distributed data coherency protocol and a distributed task scheduling mechanism which avoid global coordination. Experimental results with linear algebra applications show the scalability and performance of our runtime environment

    Skalabilna implementacija dekodera po normi MPEG korištenjem tokovnog programskog jezika

    In this paper, we describe a scalable and portable parallelized implementation of a MPEG decoder using a streaming computation paradigm, tailored to new generations of multi--core systems. A novel, hybrid approach towards parallelization of both new and legacy applications is described, where only data--intensive and performance--critical parts are implemented in the streaming domain. An architecture--independent \u27StreamIt\u27 language is used for design, optimization and implementation of parallelized segments, while the developed \u27StreamGate\u27 interface provides a communication mechanism between the implementation domains. The proposed hybrid approach was employed in re--factoring of a reference MPEG video decoder implementation; identifying the most performance--critical segments and re-implementing them in \u27StreamIt\u27 language, with \u27StreamGate\u27 interface as a communication mechanism between the host and streaming kernel. We evaluated the scalability of the decoder with respect to the number of cores, video frame formats, sizes and decomposition. Decoder performance was examined in the presence of different processor load configurations and with respect to the number of simultaneously processed frames.U ovom radu opisujemo skalabilnu i prenosivu implementaciju dekodera po normi MPEG ostvarenu korištenjem paradigme tokovnog računarstva, prilagođenu novim generacijama višejezgrenih računala. Opisan je novi, hibridni pristup paralelizaciji novih ili postojećih aplikacija, gdje se samo podatkovno intenzivni i računski zahtjevni dijelovi implementiraju u tokovnoj domeni. Arhitekturno neovisni jezik StreamIt koristi se za oblikovanje, optimiranje i izvedbu paraleliziranih segmenata aplikacije, dok razvijeno sučelje \u27StreamGate\u27 omogućava komunikaciju između domena implementacije. Predloženi hibridni pristup razvoju paraleliziranih aplikacija iskorišten je u preoblikovanju referentnog dekodera video zapisa po normi MPEG; identificirani su računski zahtjevni segmenti aplikacije i ponovno implementirani u jeziku StreamIt, sa sučeljem \u27StreamGate\u27 kao poveznicom između slijedne i tokovne domene. Ispitivana su svojstva skalabilnosti s obzirom na ciljani broj jezgri, format video zapisa i veličinu okvira te dekompoziciju ulaznih podataka. Svojstva dekodera  su praćena u prisustvu različitih opterećenja ispitnog računala, i s obzirom na broj istovremeno obrađivanih okvira

    Model-Based Design for High-Performance Signal Processing Applications

    Developing high-performance signal processing applications requires not only effective signal processing algorithms but also efficient software design methods that can take full advantage of the available processing resources. An increasingly important type of hardware platform for high-performance signal processing is a multicore central processing unit (CPU) combined with a graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerator. Efficiently coordinating computations on both the host (CPU) and device (GPU), and managing host-device data transfers are critical to utilizing CPU-GPU platforms effectively. However, such coordination is challenging for system designers, given the complexity of modern signal processing applications and the stringent constraints under which they must operate. Dataflow models of computation provide a useful framework for addressing this challenge. In such a modeling approach, signal processing applications are represented as directed graphs that can be viewed intuitively as high-level signal flow diagrams. The formal, high-level abstraction provided by dataflow principles provides a useful foundation to investigate model-based analysis and optimization for new challenges in design and implementation of signal processing systems. This thesis presents a new model-based design methodology and an evolution of three novel design tools. These contributions provide an automated design flow for high performance signal processing. The design flow takes high-level dataflow representations as input and systematically derives optimized implementations on CPU-GPU platforms. The proposed design flow and associated design methodology are inspired by a previously-developed application programming interface (API) called the Hybrid Task Graph Scheduler (HTGS). HTGS was developed for implementing scalable workflows for high-performance computing applications on compute nodes that have large numbers of processing cores, and that may be equipped with multiple GPUs. However, HTGS has a limitation due to its relatively loose use of dataflow techniques (or other forms of model-based design), which results in a significant designer effort being required to apply the provided APIs effectively. The main contributions of the thesis are summarized as follows: (1) Development of a companion tool to HTGS that is called the HTGS Model-based Engine (HMBE). HMBE introduces novel capabilities to automatically analyze application dataflow graphs and generate efficient schedules for these graphs through hybrid compile-time and runtime analysis. The systematic, model-based approaches provided by HMBE enable the automation of complex tasks that must be performed manually when using HTGS alone. We have demonstrated the effectiveness of HMBE and the associated model-based design methodology through extensive experiments involving two case studies: an image stitching application for large scale microscopy images, and a background subtraction application for multispectral video streams. (2) Integration of HMBE with HTGS to develop a new design tool for the design and implementation of high-performance signal processing systems. This tool, called HMBE-Integrated-HTGS (HI-HTGS), provides novel capabilities for model-based system design, memory management, and scheduling targeted to multicore platforms. HMBE takes as input a single- or multi-dimensional dataflow model of the given signal processing application. The tool then expands the dataflow model into an expanded representation that exposes more parallelism and provides significantly more detail on the interactions between different application tasks (dataflow actors). This expanded representation is derived by HI-HTGS at compile-time and provided as input to the HI-HTGS runtime system. The runtime system in turn applies the expanded representation to guide dynamic scheduling decisions throughout system execution. (3) Extension of HMBE to the class of CPU-GPU platforms motivated above. We call this new model-based design tool the CPU-GPU Model-Based Engine (CGMBE). CGMBE uses an unfolded dataflow graph representation of the application along with thread-pool-based executors, which are optimized for efficient operation on the targeted CPU-GPU platform. This approach automates complex aspects of the design and implementation process for signal processing system designers while maximizing the utilization of computational power, reducing the memory footprint for both the CPU and GPU, and facilitating experimentation for tuning performance-oriented designs

    Reconfigurable Video Coding on multicore : an overview of its main objectives

    International audienceThe current monolithic and lengthy scheme behind the standardization and the design of new video coding standards is becoming inappropriate to satisfy the dynamism and changing needs of the video coding community. Such scheme and specification formalism does not allow the clear commonalities between the different codecs to be shown, at the level of the specification nor at the level of the implementation. Such a problem is one of the main reasons for the typically long interval elapsing between the time a new idea is validated until it is implemented in consumer products as part of a worldwide standard. The analysis of this problem originated a new standard initiative within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/ International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) committee, namely Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC). The main idea is to develop a video coding standard that overcomes many shortcomings of the current standardization and specification process by updating and progressively incrementing a modular library of components. As the name implies, flexibility and reconfigurability are new attractive features of the RVC standard. Besides allowing for the definition of new codec algorithms, such features, as well as the dataflow-based specification formalism, open the way to define video coding standards that expressly target implementations on platforms with multiple cores. This article provides an overview of the main objectives of the new RVC standard, with an emphasis on the features that enable efficient implementation on platforms with multiple cores. A brief introduction to the methodologies that efficiently map RVC codec specifications to multicore platforms is accompanied with an example of the possible breakthroughs that are expected to occur in the design and deployment of multimedia services on multicore platforms
