    The 8th International Symposium "Monitoring of Mediterranean Coastal Areas. Problems and Measurements Techniques" was organized by CNR-IBE in collaboration with FCS Foundation, and Natural History Museum of the Mediterranean and under the patronage of University of Florence, Accademia dei Geogofili, Tuscany Region and Livorno Province. It is the occasion in which scholars can illustrate and exchange their activities and innovative proposals, with common aims to promote actions to preserve coastal marine environment. Considering Symposium interdisciplinary nature, the Scientific Committee, underlining this holistic view of Nature, decided to celebrate Alexander von Humboldt; a nature scholar that proposed the organic and inorganic nature’s aspects as a single system. It represents a sign of continuity considering that in-presence Symposium could not be carried out due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Subjects are related to coastal topics: morphology; flora and fauna; energy production; management and integrated protection; geography and landscape, cultural heritage and environmental assets, legal and economic aspects

    Detection and prediction of urban archetypes at the pedestrian scale: computational toolsets, morphological metrics, and machine learning methods

    Granular, dense, and mixed-use urban morphologies are hallmarks of walkable and vibrant streets. However, urban systems are notoriously complex and planned urban development, which grapples with varied interdependent and oft conflicting criteria, may — despite best intentions — yield aberrant morphologies fundamentally at odds with the needs of pedestrians and the resiliency of neighbourhoods. This work addresses the measurement, detection, and prediction of pedestrian-friendly urban archetypes by developing techniques for high-resolution urban analytics at the pedestrian scale. A spatial-analytic computational toolset, the cityseer-api Python package, is created to assess localised centrality, land-use, and statistical metrics using contextually sensitive workflows applied directly over the street network. cityseer-api subsequently facilitates a review of mixed-use and street network centrality methods to improve their utility concerning granular urban analysis. Unsupervised machine learning methods are applied to recover ‘signatures’ — urban archetypes — using Principal Component Analysis, Variational Autoencoders, and clustering methods from a high-resolution multi-variable and multi-scalar dataset consisting of centralities, land-uses, and population densities for Greater London. Supervised deep-learning methods applied to a similar dataset developed for 931 towns and cities in Great Britain demonstrate how, with the aid of domain knowledge, machine-learning classifiers can learn to discriminate between ‘artificial’ and ‘historical’ urban archetypes. These methods use complex systems thinking as a departure point and illustrate how high-resolution spatial-analytic quantitative methods can be combined with machine learning to extrapolate benchmarks in keeping with more qualitatively framed urban morphological conceptions. Such tools may aid urban design professionals in better anticipating the outcomes of varied design scenarios as part of iterative and scalable workflows. These techniques may likewise provide robust and demonstrable feedback as part of planning review and approvals processes

    Networks of Circular Economy Villages: Political Economic Principles and Spatial Potentials

    Faced with the challenges to restructure societies for long term sustainability, greater attention should be given to the design of human settlements and their relationship to each other. This thesis explores the pattern of human settlements and the possibility of finding a solution in the form of networks of Circular Economy Villages (CEVs). Each CEV would integrate energy, water, food and building infrastructure, aligning these with local ecological cycles. This would maximise local production and improve energy efficiency, while reducing both financial and ecological costs. The research question is: How would human habitats be structured in a political economic paradigm wherein populations were mobilised to regenerate natural systems and, through this, to rehabilitate and regenerate the human condition? Asking the question in reverse: How might a disruptive model for building human habitats enable the development of such a regenerative political economic paradigm? Critiques are most effective when accompanied by a viable alternative vision and an implementation strategy. The vision is therefore described at the outset, contrasting it with present political economic arrangements. The latter centralises production in densely populated cities, surrounded by less-densely populated towns and villages. The vision proposes a more even distribution of populations—a network of communities, each responsible for, and dependent on, the land upon which they are located. This thesis adopts a dialectical method, comparing centralised with distributed systems, extractive with regenerative processes, and linear with circular economies. Circular patterns underpin and connect all the chapters, exploring relational, temporal, spatial and holistic perspectives of circularity. By contrasting present circumstances with a possible future, various implementation strategies are developed—including town planning policies, a financial plan, and design principles for building networks of CEVs

    Knowledge Capturing in Design Briefing Process for Requirement Elicitation and Validation

    Knowledge capturing and reusing are major processes of knowledge management that deal with the elicitation of valuable knowledge via some techniques and methods for use in actual and further studies, projects, services, or products. The construction industry, as well, adopts and uses some of these concepts to improve various construction processes and stages. From pre-design to building delivery knowledge management principles and briefing frameworks have been implemented across project stakeholders: client, design teams, construction teams, consultants, and facility management teams. At pre-design and design stages, understanding the client’s needs and users’ knowledge are crucial for identifying and articulating the expected requirements and objectives. Due to underperforming results and missed goals and objectives, many projects finish with highly dissatisfied clients and loss of contracts for some organizations. Knowledge capturing has beneficial effects via its principles and methods on requirement elicitation and validation at the briefing stage between user, client and designer. This paper presents the importance and usage of knowledge capturing and reusing in briefing process at pre-design and design stages especially the involvement of client and user, and explores the techniques and technologies that are usable in briefing process for requirement elicitation

    An Investigation on Benefit-Cost Analysis of Greenhouse Structures in Antalya

    Significant population increase across the world, loss of cultivable land and increasing demand for food put pressure on agriculture. To meet the demand, greenhouses are built, which are, light structures with transparent cladding material in order to provide controlled microclimatic environment proper for plant production. Conceptually, greenhouses are similar with manufacturing buildings where a controlled environment for manufacturing and production have been provided and proper spaces for standardized production processes have been enabled. Parallel with the trends in the world, particularly in southern regions, greenhouse structures have been increasingly constructed and operated in Turkey. A significant number of greenhouses are located at Antalya. The satellite images demonstrated that for over last three decades, there has been a continuous invasion of greenhouses on all cultivable land. There are various researches and attempts for the improvement of greenhouse design and for increasing food production by decreasing required energy consumption. However, the majority of greenhouses in Turkey are very rudimentary structures where capital required for investment is low, but maintenance requirements are high when compared with new generation greenhouse structures. In this research paper, life-long capital requirements for construction and operation of greenhouse buildings in Antalya has been investigated by using benefit-cost analysis study

    The Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade and the Society for Aesthetics of Architecture and Visual Arts of Serbia (DEAVUS) are proud to be able to organize the 21st ICA Congress on “Possible Worlds of Contemporary Aesthetics: Aesthetics Between History, Geography and Media”. We are proud to announce that we received over 500 submissions from 56 countries, which makes this Congress the greatest gathering of aestheticians in this region in the last 40 years. The ICA 2019 Belgrade aims to map out contemporary aesthetics practices in a vivid dialogue of aestheticians, philosophers, art theorists, architecture theorists, culture theorists, media theorists, artists, media entrepreneurs, architects, cultural activists and researchers in the fields of humanities and social sciences. More precisely, the goal is to map the possible worlds of contemporary aesthetics in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australia. The idea is to show, interpret and map the unity and diverseness in aesthetic thought, expression, research, and philosophies on our shared planet. Our goal is to promote a dialogue concerning aesthetics in those parts of the world that have not been involved with the work of the International Association for Aesthetics to this day. Global dialogue, understanding and cooperation are what we aim to achieve. That said, the 21st ICA is the first Congress to highlight the aesthetic issues of marginalised regions that have not been fully involved in the work of the IAA. This will be accomplished, among others, via thematic round tables discussing contemporary aesthetics in East Africa and South America. Today, aesthetics is recognized as an important philosophical, theoretical and even scientific discipline that aims at interpreting the complexity of phenomena in our contemporary world. People rather talk about possible worlds or possible aesthetic regimes rather than a unique and consistent philosophical, scientific or theoretical discipline
