    3E: Energy-Efficient Elastic Scheduling for Independent Tasks in Heterogeneous Computing Systems

    Reducing energy consumption is a major design constraint for modern heterogeneous computing systems to minimize electricity cost, improve system reliability and protect environment. Conventional energy-efficient scheduling strategies developed on these systems do not sufficiently exploit the system elasticity and adaptability for maximum energy savings, and do not simultaneously take account of user expected finish time. In this paper, we develop a novel scheduling strategy named energy-efficient elastic (3E) scheduling for aperiodic, independent and non-real-time tasks with user expected finish times on DVFS-enabled heterogeneous computing systems. The 3E strategy adjusts processors’ supply voltages and frequencies according to the system workload, and makes trade-offs between energy consumption and user expected finish times. Compared with other energy-efficient strategies, 3E significantly improves the scheduling quality and effectively enhances the system elasticity

    Fault Tolerant Scheduling of Precedence Task Graphs on Heterogeneous Platforms

    Fault tolerance and latency are important requirements in several applications which are time critical in nature: such applications require guaranties in terms of latency, even when processors are subject to failures. In this paper, we propose a fault tolerant scheduling heuristic for mapping precedence task graphs on heterogeneous systems. Our approach is based on an active replication scheme, capable of supporting ε\varepsilon arbitrary fail-silent (fail-stop) processor failures, hence valid results will be provided even if ε\varepsilon processors fail. We focus on a bi-criteria approach, where we aim at minimizing the latency given a fixed number of failures supported in the system, or the other way round. Major achievements include a low complexity, and a drastic reduction of the number of additional communications induced by the replication mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate that our heuristics, despite their lower complexity, outperform their direct competitor, the FTBAR scheduling algorithm[8].La tolérance aux pannes et la latence sont deux critères importants pour plusieurs applications qui sont critiques par nature. Ce type d’applications exige des garanties en terme de temps de latence, même lorsque les processeurs sont sujets aux pannes. Dans ce rapport, nous proposons une heuristique tolérante aux pannes pour l’ordonnancement de graphes de tâches sur des systèmes hétérogènes. Notre approche est basée sur un mécanisme de réplication active, capable de supporter " pannes arbitraires de type silence sur défaillance. En d’autres termes, des résultats valides seront fournis même si " processeurs tombent en panne. Nous nous concentrons sur une approche bi-critère, où nous avons pour objectif de minimiser le temps de latence pour un nombre donné (fixé) de pannes tolérées dans le système, ou l’inverse. Les principales contributions incluent une faible complexité en temps d’exécution, et une réduction importante du nombre de communications induites par le mécanisme de réplication.Les résultats expérimentaux montrent que notre algorithme, en dépit de sa faible complexité temporelle, est meilleur que son direct compétiteur,l’algorithme FTBA

    Evaluation and comparison of integer programming solvers for hard real-time scheduling

    [EN] In order to obtain a feasible schedule of a hard real-time system, heuristic based techniques are the solution of choice. In the last few years, optimization solvers have gained attention from research communities due to their capability of handling large number of constraints. Recently, some works have used integer linear programming (ILP) for solving mono processor scheduling of real-time systems. In fact, ILP is commonly used for static scheduling of multiprocessor systems. However, two main solvers are used to solve the problem indistinctly. But, which one is the best for obtaining a schedulable system for hard real-time systems?     Scheduling in Grid Computing Environment

    Scheduling in Grid computing has been active area of research since its beginning. However, beginners find very difficult to understand related concepts due to a large learning curve of Grid computing. Thus, there is a need of concise understanding of scheduling in Grid computing area. This paper strives to present concise understanding of scheduling and related understanding of Grid computing system. The paper describes overall picture of Grid computing and discusses important sub-systems that enable Grid computing possible. Moreover, the paper also discusses concepts of resource scheduling and application scheduling and also presents classification of scheduling algorithms. Furthermore, the paper also presents methodology used for evaluating scheduling algorithms including both real system and simulation based approaches.     Combined Scheduling of Time-Triggered Plans and Priority Scheduled Task Sets

Both have their advantages and drawbacks with respect to the other, and are commonly adopted in mutual exclusion. In a previous paper, we proposed a software architecture that enables the combined and controlled execution of time-triggered plans and priority-scheduled tasks. The goal was to take advantage of the best of both approaches by providing deterministic, jitter-controlled execution of time-triggered tasks (e.g., control tasks), coexisting with a set of priority-scheduled tasks, with less demanding jitter requirements. In this paper, we briefly describe the approach, in which the time-triggered plan is executed at the highest priority level, controlled by scheduling decisions taken only at particular points in time, signalled by recurrent timing events. The rest of priority levels are used by a set of concurrent tasks scheduled by static or dynamic priorities.     Energy-Aware Scheduling for Streaming Applications

    Streaming applications have become increasingly important and widespread,with application domains ranging from embedded devices to server systems.Traditionally, researchers have been focusing on improving the performanceof streaming applications to achieve high throughput and low response time.However, increasingly more attention is being shifted topower/performance trade-offbecause power consumption has become a limiting factor on system designas integrated circuits enter the realm of nanometer technology.This work addresses the problem of scheduling a streaming application(represented by a task graph)with the goal of minimizing its energy consumptionwhile satisfying its two quality of service (QoS) requirements,namely, throughput and response time.The available power management mechanisms are dynamic voltage scaling (DVS),which has been shown to be effective in reducing dynamic power consumption, andvary-on/vary-off, which turns processors on and off to save static power consumption.Scheduling algorithms are proposed for different computing platforms (uniprocessor and multiprocessor systems),different characteristics of workload (deterministic and stochastic workload),and different types of task graphs (singleton and general task graphs).Both continuous and discrete processor power models are considered.The highlights are a unified approach for obtaining optimal (or provably close to optimal)uniprocessor DVS schemes for various DVS strategies anda novel multiprocessor scheduling algorithm that exploits the differencebetween the two QoS requirements to perform processor allocation,task mapping, and task speedscheduling simultaneously
