    A hybrid genetic algorithm and tabu search approach for post enrolment course timetabling

All rights reserved.The post enrolment course timetabling problem (PECTP) is one type of university course timetabling problems, in which a set of events has to be scheduled in time slots and located in suitable rooms according to the student enrolment data. The PECTP is an NP-hard combinatorial optimisation problem and hence is very difficult to solve to optimality. This paper proposes a hybrid approach to solve the PECTP in two phases. In the first phase, a guided search genetic algorithm is applied to solve the PECTP. This guided search genetic algorithm, integrates a guided search strategy and some local search techniques, where the guided search strategy uses a data structure that stores useful information extracted from previous good individuals to guide the generation of offspring into the population and the local search techniques are used to improve the quality of individuals. In the second phase, a tabu search heuristic is further used on the best solution obtained by the first phase to improve the optimality of the solution if possible. The proposed hybrid approach is tested on a set of benchmark PECTPs taken from the international timetabling competition in comparison with a set of state-of-the-art methods from the literature.     INTEGRATED APPROACH OF SCHEDULING A FLEXIBLE JOB SHOP USING ENHANCED FIREFLY AND HYBRID FLOWER POLLINATION ALGORITHMS

    Manufacturing industries are undergoing tremendous transformation due to Industry 4.0. Flexibility, consumer demands, product customization, high product quality, and reduced delivery times are mandatory for the survival of a manufacturing plant, for which scheduling plays a major role. A job shop problem modified with flexibility is called flexible job shop scheduling. It is an integral part of smart manufacturing. This study aims to optimize scheduling using an integrated approach, where assigning machines and their routing are concurrently performed. Two hybrid methods have been proposed: 1) The Hybrid Adaptive Firefly Algorithm (HAdFA) and 2) Hybrid Flower Pollination Algorithm (HFPA). To address the premature convergence problem inherent in the classic firefly algorithm, the proposed HAdFA employs two novel adaptive strategies: employing an adaptive randomization parameter (α), which dynamically modifies at each step, and Gray relational analysis updates firefly at each step, thereby maintaining a balance between diversification and intensification. HFPA is inspired by the pollination strategy of flowers. Additionally, both HAdFA and HFPA are incorporated with a local search technique of enhanced simulated annealing to accelerate the algorithm and prevent local optima entrapment. Tests on standard benchmark cases have been performed to demonstrate the proposed algorithm’s efficacy. The proposed HAdFA surpasses the performance of the HFPA and other metaheuristics found in the literature. A case study was conducted to further authenticate the efficiency of our algorithm. Our algorithm significantly improves convergence speed and enables the exploration of a large number of rich optimal solutions.

    Parallel Genetic Algorithms with Application to Load Balancing for Parallel Computing

    A new coarse grain parallel genetic algorithm (PGA) and a new implementation of a data-parallel GA are presented in this paper. They are based on models of natural evolution in which the population is formed of discontinuous or continuous subpopulations. In addition to simulating natural evolution, the intrinsic parallelism in the two PGA\u27s minimizes the possibility of premature convergence that the implementation of classic GA\u27s often encounters. Intrinsic parallelism also allows the evolution of fit genotypes in a smaller number of generations in the PGA\u27s than in sequential GA\u27s, leading to superlinear speed-ups. The PGA\u27s have been implemented on a hypercube and a Connection Machine, and their operation is demonstrated by applying them to the load balancing problem in parallel computing. The PGA\u27s have found near-optimal solutions which are comparable to the solutions of a simulated annealing algorithm and are better than those produced by a sequential GA and by other load balancing methods. On one hand, The PGA\u27s accentuate the advantage of parallel computers for simulating natural evolution. On the other hand, they represent new techniques for load balancing parallel computations

    Scheduling Algorithms: Challenges Towards Smart Manufacturing

    Collecting, processing, analyzing, and driving knowledge from large-scale real-time data is now realized with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL). The breakthrough of Industry 4.0 lays a foundation for intelligent manufacturing. However, implementation challenges of scheduling algorithms in the context of smart manufacturing are not yet comprehensively studied. The purpose of this study is to show the scheduling No.s that need to be considered in the smart manufacturing paradigm. To attain this objective, the literature review is conducted in five stages using publish or perish tools from different sources such as Scopus, Pubmed, Crossref, and Google Scholar. As a result, the first contribution of this study is a critical analysis of existing production scheduling algorithms\u27 characteristics and limitations from the viewpoint of smart manufacturing. The other contribution is to suggest the best strategies for selecting scheduling algorithms in a real-world scenario

    Reliable and efficient material transport is one of the basic requirements that affect productivity in industry. For that reason, in this paper two approaches are proposed for the task of intelligent material transport by using a mobile robot. The first approach is based on applying genetic algorithms for optimizing process plans. Optimized process plans are passed to the genetic algorithm for scheduling which generate an optimal job sequence by using minimal makespan as criteria. The second approach uses graph theory for generating paths and neural networks for learning generated paths. The Matlab© software package is used for developing genetic algorithms, manufacturing process simulation, implementing search algorithms and neural network training. The obtained paths are tested by means of the Khepera II mobile robot system within a static laboratory model of manufacturing environment. The experiment results clearly show that an intelligent mobile robot can follow paths generated by using genetic algorithms as well as learn and predict optimal material transport flows thanks to using neural networks. The achieved positioning error of the mobile robot indicates that the conceptual design approach based on the axiomatic design theory can be used for designing the material transport and handling tasks in intelligent manufacturing systems.Pouzdan i efikasan transport materijala je jedan od ključnih zahtjeva koji utječe na povećanje produktivnosti u industriji. Iz tog razloga, u radu su predložena dva pristupa za inteligentan transport materijala korištenjem mobilnog robota. Prvi pristup se zasniva na primjeni genetskih algoritama za optimizaciju tehnoloških procesa. Optimalna putanja se dobiva korištenjem optimalnih tehnoloških procesa i genetskih algoritama za vremensko planiranje, uz minimalno vrijeme kao kriterij. Drugi pristup je temeljen na primjeni teorije grafova za generiranje putanja i neuronskih mreža za učenje generirane putanje. Matlab© softverski paket je korišten za razvoj genetskih algoritama, simulaciju tehnoloških procesa, implementaciju algoritama pretraživanja i obučavanje neuronskih mreža. Dobivene putanje su testirane pomoću Khepera II mobilnog robota u statičkom laboratorijskom modelu tehnološkog okruženja. Eksperimentalni rezultati pokazuju kako inteligentni mobilni robot prati putanje generirane korištenjem genetskih algoritama, kao i da uči i predviđa optimalne tokove materijala zahvaljujući neuronskim mrežama. Ostvarena pogreška pozicioniranja mobilnog robota ukazuje da se koncepcijski pristup baziran na aksiomatskoj teoriji projektiranja može koristiti u projektiranju transporta i manipulacije u inteligentnom tehnološkom sustavu

    Model for assigning roles automatically in egovernment virtual organizations

    When working in conjunction with multiagent systems, virtual organizations attempt to simulate the functions and interactions of entities in different environments. Recent studies have addressed the problem of assigning roles to agents that form part of the organization, and incorporating new agents to carry out certain tasks. However, these studies are limited to defining the norms and rules that determine the behavior of the organization. The present study proposes a virtual organization model for egovernment environments to assign resources and minimize the required personnel by forecasting workloads. To this end, a neural network, queuing theory, and CBR are used to obtain an efficient distribution. Queuing theory can establish the number of agents with a specific role that are necessary to maximize profits, while the network distributes roles among agents according to their respective efficiency. The final part of the paper is focused on validating the plan developed inside a case study centered on e-government in order to obtain empirical results

    Bus driver rostering by hybrid methods based on column generation

    Tese de doutoramento, Informática (Engenharia Informática), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2018Rostering problems arise in a diversity of areas where, according to the business and labor rules, distinct variants of the problem are obtained with different constraints and objectives considered. The diversity of existing rostering problems, allied with their complexity, justifies the activity of the research community addressing them. The current research on rostering problems is mainly devoted to achieving near-optimal solutions since, most of the times, the time needed to obtain optimal solutions is very high. In this thesis, a Bus Driver Rostering Problem is addressed, to which an integer programming model is adapted from the literature, and a new decomposition model with three distinct subproblems representations is proposed. The main objective of this research is to develop and evaluate a new approach to obtain solutions to the problem in study. The new approach follows the concept of search based on column generation, which consists in using the column generation method to solve problems represented by decomposition models and, after, applying metaheuristics to search for the best combination of subproblem solutions that, when combined, result in a feasible integer solution to the complete problem. Besides the new decomposition models proposed for the Bus Driver Rostering Problem, this thesis proposes the extension of the concept of search by column generation to allow using population-based metaheuristics and presents the implementation of the first metaheuristic using populations, based on the extension, which is an evolutionary algorithm. There are two additional contributions of this thesis. The first is an heuristic allowing to obtain solutions for the subproblems in an individual or aggregated way and the second is a repair operator which can be used by the metaheuristics to repair infeasible solutions and, eventually, generate missing subproblem solutions needed. The thesis includes the description and results from an extensive set of computational tests. Multiple configurations of the column generation with three decomposition models are tested to assess the best configuration to use in the generation of the search space for the metaheuristic. Additional tests compare distinct single-solution metaheuristics and our basic evolutionary algorithm in the search for integer solutions in the search space obtained by the column generation. A final set of tests compares the results of our final algorithm (with the best column generation configuration and the evolutionary algorithm using the repair operator) and the solutions obtained by solving the problem represented by the integer programming model with a commercial solver.Programa de Apoio à Formação Avançada de Docentes do Ensino Superior Politécnico (PROTEC), SFRH/PROTEC/67405/201
