    Target Tracking in Confined Environments with Uncertain Sensor Positions

    To ensure safety in confined environments such as mines or subway tunnels, a (wireless) sensor network can be deployed to monitor various environmental conditions. One of its most important applications is to track personnel, mobile equipment and vehicles. However, the state-of-the-art algorithms assume that the positions of the sensors are perfectly known, which is not necessarily true due to imprecise placement and/or dropping of sensors. Therefore, we propose an automatic approach for simultaneous refinement of sensors' positions and target tracking. We divide the considered area in a finite number of cells, define dynamic and measurement models, and apply a discrete variant of belief propagation which can efficiently solve this high-dimensional problem, and handle all non-Gaussian uncertainties expected in this kind of environments. Finally, we use ray-tracing simulation to generate an artificial mine-like environment and generate synthetic measurement data.     Scalable Approach to Uncertainty Quantification and Robust Design of Interconnected Dynamical Systems

    Development of robust dynamical systems and networks such as autonomous aircraft systems capable of accomplishing complex missions faces challenges due to the dynamically evolving uncertainties coming from model uncertainties, necessity to operate in a hostile cluttered urban environment, and the distributed and dynamic nature of the communication and computation resources. Model-based robust design is difficult because of the complexity of the hybrid dynamic models including continuous vehicle dynamics, the discrete models of computations and communications, and the size of the problem. We will overview recent advances in methodology and tools to model, analyze, and design robust autonomous aerospace systems operating in uncertain environment, with stress on efficient uncertainty quantification and robust design using the case studies of the mission including model-based target tracking and search, and trajectory planning in uncertain urban environment. To show that the methodology is generally applicable to uncertain dynamical systems, we will also show examples of application of the new methods to efficient uncertainty quantification of energy usage in buildings, and stability assessment of interconnected power networks

    Learning to Look Around: Intelligently Exploring Unseen Environments for Unknown Tasks

    It is common to implicitly assume access to intelligently captured inputs (e.g., photos from a human photographer), yet autonomously capturing good observations is itself a major challenge. We address the problem of learning to look around: if a visual agent has the ability to voluntarily acquire new views to observe its environment, how can it learn efficient exploratory behaviors to acquire informative observations? We propose a reinforcement learning solution, where the agent is rewarded for actions that reduce its uncertainty about the unobserved portions of its environment. Based on this principle, we develop a recurrent neural network-based approach to perform active completion of panoramic natural scenes and 3D object shapes. Crucially, the learned policies are not tied to any recognition task nor to the particular semantic content seen during training. As a result, 1) the learned "look around" behavior is relevant even for new tasks in unseen environments, and 2) training data acquisition involves no manual labeling. Through tests in diverse settings, we demonstrate that our approach learns useful generic policies that transfer to new unseen tasks and environments.     Using wireless sensors and networks program for chemical particle propagation mapping and chemical source localization

    Chemical source localization is a challenge for most of researchers. It has extensive applications, such as anti-terrorist military, Gas and oil industry, and environment engineering. This dissertation used wireless sensor and sensor networks to get chemical particle propagation mapping and chemical source localization. First, the chemical particle propagation mapping is built using interpolation and extrapolation methods. The interpolation method get the chemical particle path through the sensors, and the extrapolation method get the chemical particle beyond the sensors. Both of them compose of the mapping in the whole considered area. Second, the algorithm of sensor fusion is proposed. It smooths the chemical particle paths through integration of more sensors\u27 value and updating the parameters. The updated parameters are associated with including sensor fusion among chemical sensors and wind sensors at same positions and sensor fusion among sensors at different positions. This algorithm improves the accuracy and efficiency of chemical particle mapping. Last, the reasoning system is implemented aiming to detect the chemical source in the considered region where the chemical particle propagation mapping has been finished. This control scheme dynamically analyzes the data from the sensors and guide us to find the goal. In this dissertation, the novel algorithm of modelling chemical propagation is programmed using Matlab. Comparing the results from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software COMSOL, this algorithm have the same level of accuracy. However, it saves more computational times and memories.     CycleGAN for Interpretable Online EMT Compensation

    Purpose: Electromagnetic Tracking (EMT) can partially replace X-ray guidance in minimally invasive procedures, reducing radiation in the OR. However, in this hybrid setting, EMT is disturbed by metallic distortion caused by the X-ray device. We plan to make hybrid navigation clinical reality to reduce radiation exposure for patients and surgeons, by compensating EMT error. Methods: Our online compensation strategy exploits cycle-consistent generative adversarial neural networks (CycleGAN). 3D positions are translated from various bedside environments to their bench equivalents. Domain-translated points are fine-tuned to reduce error in the bench domain. We evaluate our compensation approach in a phantom experiment. Results: Since the domain-translation approach maps distorted points to their lab equivalents, predictions are consistent among different C-arm environments. Error is successfully reduced in all evaluation environments. Our qualitative phantom experiment demonstrates that our approach generalizes well to an unseen C-arm environment. Conclusion: Adversarial, cycle-consistent training is an explicable, consistent and thus interpretable approach for online error compensation.     Graceful Navigation for Mobile Robots in Dynamic and Uncertain Environments.

    The ability to navigate in everyday environments is a fundamental and necessary skill for any autonomous mobile agent that is intended to work with human users. The presence of pedestrians and other dynamic objects, however, makes the environment inherently dynamic and uncertain. To navigate in such environments, an agent must reason about the near future and make an optimal decision at each time step so that it can move safely toward the goal. Furthermore, for any application intended to carry passengers, it also must be able to move smoothly and comfortably, and the robot behavior needs to be customizable to match the preference of the individual users. Despite decades of progress in the field of motion planning and control, this remains a difficult challenge with existing methods. In this dissertation, we show that safe, comfortable, and customizable mobile robot navigation in dynamic and uncertain environments can be achieved via stochastic model predictive control. We view the problem of navigation in dynamic and uncertain environments as a continuous decision making process, where an agent with short-term predictive capability reasons about its situation and makes an informed decision at each time step. The problem of robot navigation in dynamic and uncertain environments is formulated as an on-line, finite-horizon policy and trajectory optimization problem under uncertainty. With our formulation, planning and control becomes fully integrated, which allows direct optimization of the performance measure. Furthermore, with our approach the problem becomes easy to solve, which allows our algorithm to run in real time on a single core of a typical laptop with off-the-shelf optimization packages. The work presented in this thesis extends the state-of-the-art in analytic control of mobile robots, sampling-based optimal path planning, and stochastic model predictive control.
