    High-resolution distributed sampling of bandlimited fields with low-precision sensors

    The problem of sampling a discrete-time sequence of spatially bandlimited fields with a bounded dynamic range, in a distributed, communication-constrained, processing environment is addressed. A central unit, having access to the data gathered by a dense network of fixed-precision sensors, operating under stringent inter-node communication constraints, is required to reconstruct the field snapshots to maximum accuracy. Both deterministic and stochastic field models are considered. For stochastic fields, results are established in the almost-sure sense. The feasibility of having a flexible tradeoff between the oversampling rate (sensor density) and the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) precision, while achieving an exponential accuracy in the number of bits per Nyquist-interval per snapshot is demonstrated. This exposes an underlying ``conservation of bits'' principle: the bit-budget per Nyquist-interval per snapshot (the rate) can be distributed along the amplitude axis (sensor-precision) and space (sensor density) in an almost arbitrary discrete-valued manner, while retaining the same (exponential) distortion-rate characteristics. Achievable information scaling laws for field reconstruction over a bounded region are also derived: With N one-bit sensors per Nyquist-interval, Θ(logN)\Theta(\log N) Nyquist-intervals, and total network bitrate Rnet=Θ((logN)2)R_{net} = \Theta((\log N)^2) (per-sensor bitrate Θ((logN)/N)\Theta((\log N)/N)), the maximum pointwise distortion goes to zero as D=O((logN)2/N)D = O((\log N)^2/N) or D=O(Rnet2βRnet)D = O(R_{net} 2^{-\beta \sqrt{R_{net}}}). This is shown to be possible with only nearest-neighbor communication, distributed coding, and appropriate interpolation algorithms.     A scheme on indoor tracking of ship dynamic positioning based on distributed multi-sensor data fusion

    Investigating the model ship dynamic positioning system by simulating the actual sea conditions in the laboratory can not only avoid the risks caused by the directly experiments on a true ship, but also reduce the costs. With the purpose of realizing the high accuracy control of the dynamic positioning, besides a high accuracy mathematical model of the ship, an important condition is that the position information provided by the position detection system must be accurate, reliable and continuous. The global positioning system (GPS) signal is restricted when the model ship dynamic positioning system is set indoors. This paper describes a novel scheme for ship target tracking based on the multi-sensor data fusion techniques. To improve the accuracy of indoor positioning and ship target tracking, the characteristics of many sensors are systematically analyzed, such as radar, difference global positioning system (DGPS) and ultrasonic sensors. Other important factors, including the indoor temperature, position and environment, are also taken into account to further optimize the performance. Combining the Kalman filter method, the time alignment method, the coordinate transformation method and the optimal fusion criterion method, the core algorithm of our framework employs the track correlation as the performance index of the optimal fusion. The experimental results indicate that our method outperforms the methods based on a single ultrasonic sensor. The maximum error between the estimated location and the real location is only 1.32 cm, which meets the standard for engineering applications

    Investigation of Non-coherent Discrete Target Range Estimation Techniques for High-precision Location

    Ranging is an essential and crucial task for radar systems. How to solve the range-detection problem effectively and precisely is massively important. Meanwhile, unambiguity and high resolution are the points of interest as well. Coherent and non-coherent techniques can be applied to achieve range estimation, and both of them have advantages and disadvantages. Coherent estimates offer higher precision but are more vulnerable to noise and clutter and phase wrap errors, particularly in a complex or harsh environment, while the non-coherent approaches are simpler but provide lower precision. With the purpose of mitigating inaccuracy and perturbation in range estimation, miscellaneous techniques are employed to achieve optimally precise detection. Numerous elegant processing solutions stemming from non-coherent estimate are now introduced into the coherent realm, and vice versa. This thesis describes two non-coherent ranging estimate techniques with novel algorithms to mitigate the instinct deficit of non-coherent ranging approaches. One technique is based on peak detection and realised by Kth-order Polynomial Interpolation, while another is based on Z-transform and realised by Most-likelihood Chirp Z-transform. A two-stage approach for the fine ranging estimate is applied to the Discrete Fourier transform domain of both algorithms. An N-point Discrete Fourier transform is implemented to attain a coarse estimation; an accurate process around the point of interest determined in the first stage is conducted. For KPI technique, it interpolates around the peak of Discrete Fourier transform profiles of the chirp signal to achieve accurate interpolation and optimum precision. For Most-likelihood Chirp Z-transform technique, the Chirp Z-transform accurately implements the periodogram where only a narrow band spectrum is processed. Furthermore, the concept of most-likelihood estimator is introduced to combine with Chirp Z-transform to acquire better ranging performance. Cramer-Rao lower bound is presented to evaluate the performance of these two techniques from the perspective of statistical signal processing. Mathematical derivation, simulation modelling, theoretical analysis and experimental validation are conducted to assess technique performance. Further research will be pushed forward to algorithm optimisation and system development of a location system using non-coherent techniques and make a comparison to a coherent approach
