    Planet Superman: An ecocritical analysis of the Man of Steel from 1938-2017

    Planet Superman is a critical examination of the DC comic book superhero Superman as analyzed through an ecocritical lens. The primary argument is that, within the world of DC Comics, Superman is single-handedly capable of ending all of the Earth’s various ecological crises using his very existence as a solar battery or using his superhuman power to become a totalitarian despot that enforces the law through superior firepower. I calculate Superman’s greatest feat of energy output to prove how much solar energy is actively dormant within the Man of Steel. Using the several “versions” of Superman throughout his 79 year career (Golden Age, Silver/Bronze Age, and Modern/New Age), I argue how DC Comics has changed the character to meet the needs and values of the era he was being written in, but purposefully do not have him solve all of the world’s environmental problems for mankind. Using eco-critical theorists such as Cheryll Glotfelty, Ursula K. Le Guin, Glen Love, and Frederick Turner, this thesis poses and answers the questions of whether or not Superman saving humanity time and time again has actually made him antagonistic to the environment as a whole or if he is simply delaying the inevitable annihilation of man through their own wasteful and ecologically destructive methods—similar to how his own planet Krypton was destroyed. The question answered is whether or not human beings are a species that can save themselves or if they must be helpless bystanders as they wait on a “Superman” to do it for them

    Comic books & myths: the evolution of the mythological narratives in comic books for a contemporary myth

    This study will explore if mythological narratives are being retold and reimagined in comic books and how they are presented in film to a contemporary audience. Mainly focusing on the works of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (2004), The Táin (2008) and The Saga of the Volsungs (1999) to see how these myths are being reconstructed in the medium of comic books, and to understand why certain motifs from these myths are still being retold as they are written in the backdrop of the genre of science fiction, instead of being retold in the genre of fantasy. For myths explained the unknown to ancient cultures, this can help us understand what the contemporary audience sees as the new unknown. Moreover, this study will examine whether these mythological narratives are retold creating a single myth, and to what end have these mythological narratives taken on their new forms. Alongside the text, there is a video essay to help explore the use of myths being represented in films. The myths have been depicted in a static form, from cave paintings, to literature and various art movements, whereas in the present they can be exhibited as a moving image

    A pesar de su amplia oferta y disponibilidad a través de internet, muchas de las drogas de abuso emergentes siguen siendo desconocidas para un gran número de médicos y profesionales sanitarios. Las alternativas herbales a la marihuana (también conocidas como marihuana sintética), tales como el K2 o el spice, son un grupo de hierbas que contienen una mezcla de materia vegetal además de cannabinoides de origen sintético. El Kratom, es un producto vegetal derivado de Mitragyna speciosa Korth que tiene efectos similares a los de los opioides, y que se emplea para el tratamiento del dolor crónico y el alivio de los síntomas de retirada de los opiáceos. La Salvia divinorum es un alucinógeno con una farmacología muy singular que tiene cierto potencial terapéutico, pero que ha sido prohibido en muchos estados debido a las preocupaciones con respecto a sus efectos adversos de tipo psiquiátrico. La Metoxetamina se ha convertido recientemente en la 'ketamina legal' disponible a través de internet. Además, los derivados de la piperazina, una clase de compuestos similares a la anfetamina que incluyen la BZP y TMFPP, han aparecido como una versión legal del 'éxtasis'. Herbal marijuana alternatives (also known as synthetic marijuana), such as K2 or 'spice', are a group of herbal mixtures containing vegetable matter in addition to synthetic cannabinoids. Kratom is a plant product derived from Mitragyna speciosa Korth that has similar effects to opioids, and is used for the treatment of chronic pain and alleviating the symptoms of opioid withdrawal. Salvia divinorum is a hallucinogenic drug with a therapeutic potential, but has been banned in many states due to concerns about its psychiatric effects. Methoxetamine has recently become the 'legal ketamine' available over the Internet. In addition, piperazine derivatives, a class similar to amphetamine including BZP and TMFPP compounds have emerged as a legal version of 'ecstasy' All these psychoactive compounds are perceived as safe drugs for people and are available online. Unfortunately, these drugs have side effects depending on the dose and the mixture of drugs with health effects ranging from slight to serious.     “Superman’s Editor Mortimer Weisinger”: the Success and Extension of the Superman Brand in the Silver Age of Comics

    My thesis examines the career of Detective Comics’ editor Mortimer Weisinger from 1957-1970, during which time Superman transitioned from a simple character to a complex brand. It details the creation of the character and subsequent growth into multiple mediums. Weisinger’s greatest contribution to the hero was an extended mythology and spin-off comic series. I analyze these series, as well as his other editorial tendencies, to understand the business strategies and management of the Superman brand. Another interest in this thesis is comic book fandom, as feedback from fans allowed National’s management to identify trends. Weisinger’s involvement with early science fiction fan communities preceded his career as an editor, putting him in a unique position as a fan that turned their passion into a career. His management of the Superman line of comics informed the treatment of superhero brands today

    A Case of Sesame Seeds: Growing and Nurturing Credentials in the Face of Mimicry

    The purpose of this paper is to put the study of mimicry on the information security research map. Mimicry in humans has received little scholarly attention. Sociologist Diego Gambetta has constructed a framework that enables reasoning about episodes of mimicry based on trust in signs. By looking at the problem of phishing the applicability of this framework to problems of mimicry in information security system was tested. It was found that while the framework offers valuable insights, it needs to be updated since the assumptions that it makes do not hold in practice. A new framework is proposed, built on the core ideas of Gambetta’s framework, and extended with results from a literature study of phishing and other sources. This framework has been used for finding possible solutions to problems in web browser interface design. Because the nature of authentication was found to be the observation of discriminatory signals the paper also discusses the ethical issues surrounding the use of credentials. We hope that this paper will help system designers in finding and choosing appropriate credentials for authentication. By using the proposed framework a system can be analysed for the presence of credentials that enable the discrimination between genuine users and impostors. The framework can also serve as a method for identifying the dynamics behind user verification of credentials. The two problems that the framework can help address are the impersonation of providers and the impersonation of users. Like much other security research the results of this paper can be misused by attackers. It is expected that the framework will be more useful for defenders than attackers, as it is of an analytical nature, and cannot be used directly in any attacks. Since this study is of an exploratory nature the findings of the study need to be verified through research with greater validity. The paper contains directions for further research

    From Superman to Superbland: The Man of Steel\u27s Popular Decline among Postmodern Youth

    Although immensely popular with American boys upon his debut in 1938, Superman has gradually lost relevance with the postmodern generation. DC Comics has rewritten the character numerous times in an attempt to regain lost popularity, but the problem lies in an aspect of his character they refuse to alter – his invulnerability. Superman’s invulnerable body was engineered to quell the fears America harbored towards technological progress, but his impervious physique now renders him obsolete. Boys in postmodern America, under the influence of post-Enlightenment body values, now connect with vulnerable comic book heroes whose bodies more closely match their own. This paper examines the sociological reasons for the shift in Superman’s popularity by comparing the body values of 1938 with those of today, and concludes that while Superman might have succeeded as a modern hero, he fails as a postmodern one

    Neutron Detection by Noble Gas Excimer Scintillation

    The field of neutron detection has many essential applications, from nuclear reactor instrumentation, oil-well logging, radiation safety, and, in recent years, homeland security. Due to the shortage and increasing cost of the neutron absorber used in most conventional gas-filled proportional counters, there has been an increased motivation for the development of alternative methods of neutron detection that do not rely on 3He. Excimer-based neutron detection (END) is a potential alternative with many advantages, notably the lack of dependence on 3He. Similar to traditional proportional counters, END operates on the interaction of a neutron with a neutron absorbing nucleus (10B, 6Li, or 3He). The energetic charged particles produced in these reactions lose energy in the surrounding gas background and cause ionization and excitation of the noble gas molecules. The difference between END and traditional gas-filled detectors, which collect the ionized charge to produce a detectable signal, is the formation of noble gas excimers (Ar2*, Kr2*, or Xe2*). These excited dimers decay from an excited state back to ground level and emit far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation in the form of photons which can be collected using a photomultiplier tube (PMT) or other photon detector. The most important advantage to these potential detectors is the fact that they do not rely on the use of 3He. The excimer scintillation yield from rare noble gases following the 10B neutron capture reaction in both 10B enriched BF3 gas and reticulated vitreous carbon foam (RVC) coated with a layer of B4C is the focus of this thesis. Experimental data were collected at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and on a recently established thermal neutron beamline at the Maryland University Training Reactor (MUTR). The comparison of these data to data from previous thin-film experiments provides the groundwork for the continuation of future END work using these materials, which will be used to develop and optimize a deployable neutron detector based on excimer emission
