PSPACE Bounds for Rank-1 Modal Logics
For lack of general algorithmic methods that apply to wide classes of logics,
establishing a complexity bound for a given modal logic is often a laborious
task. The present work is a step towards a general theory of the complexity of
modal logics. Our main result is that all rank-1 logics enjoy a shallow model
property and thus are, under mild assumptions on the format of their
axiomatisation, in PSPACE. This leads to a unified derivation of tight
PSPACE-bounds for a number of logics including K, KD, coalition logic, graded
modal logic, majority logic, and probabilistic modal logic. Our generic
algorithm moreover finds tableau proofs that witness pleasant proof-theoretic
properties including a weak subformula property. This generality is made
possible by a coalgebraic semantics, which conveniently abstracts from the
details of a given model class and thus allows covering a broad range of logics
in a uniform way
Admissibility of cut in congruent modal logics
We present a detailed proof of the admissibility of cut in sequent calculus for some congruent modal logics. The result was announced much earlier during the Trends in Logic Conference, Toruń 2006 and the proof for monotonic modal logics was provided already in Indrzejczak [5]. Also some tableau and natural deduction formalizations presented in Indrzejczak [6] and Indrzejczak [7] were based on this result but the proof itself was not published so far. In this paper we are going to fill this gap. The delay was partly due to the fact that the author from time to time was trying to improve the result and extend it to some additional logics by testing other methods of proving cut elimination. Unfortunately all these attempts failed and cut elimination holds only for these logics which were proved to satisfy this property already in 2005
Grafting Hypersequents onto Nested Sequents
We introduce a new Gentzen-style framework of grafted hypersequents that
combines the formalism of nested sequents with that of hypersequents. To
illustrate the potential of the framework, we present novel calculi for the
modal logics and , as well as for extensions of the
modal logics and with the axiom for shift
reflexivity. The latter of these extensions is also known as
in the context of deontic logic. All our calculi enjoy syntactic cut
elimination and can be used in backwards proof search procedures of optimal
complexity. The tableaufication of the calculi for and
yields simplified prefixed tableau calculi for these logic
reminiscent of the simplified tableau system for , which might be
of independent interest
Automated Synthesis of Tableau Calculi
This paper presents a method for synthesising sound and complete tableau
calculi. Given a specification of the formal semantics of a logic, the method
generates a set of tableau inference rules that can then be used to reason
within the logic. The method guarantees that the generated rules form a
calculus which is sound and constructively complete. If the logic can be shown
to admit finite filtration with respect to a well-defined first-order semantics
then adding a general blocking mechanism provides a terminating tableau
calculus. The process of generating tableau rules can be completely automated
and produces, together with the blocking mechanism, an automated procedure for
generating tableau decision procedures. For illustration we show the
workability of the approach for a description logic with transitive roles and
propositional intuitionistic logic.Comment: 32 page
