    Fast Shoreline Erosion Induced by Ship Wakes in a Coastal Lagoon: Field Evidence and Remote Sensing Analysis

    An investigation based on in-situ surveys combined with remote sensing and GIS analysis revealed fast shoreline retreat on the side of a major waterway, the Malamocco Marghera Channel, in the Lagoon of Venice, Italy. Monthly and long-term regression rates caused by ship wakes in a reclaimed industrial area were considered. The short-term analysis, based on field surveys carried out between April 2014 and January 2015, revealed that the speed of shoreline regression was insignificantly dependent on the distance from the navigation channel, but was not constant through time. Periods of high water levels due to tidal forcing or storm surges, more common in the winter season, are characterized by faster regression rates. The retreat is a discontinuous process in time and space depending on the morpho-stratigraphy and the vegetation cover of the artificial deposits. A GIS analysis performed with the available imagery shows an average retreat of 3˗4 m/yr in the period between 1974 and 2015. Digitization of historical maps and bathymetric surveys made in April 2015 enabled the construction of two digital terrain models for both past and present situations. The two models have been used to calculate the total volume of sediment lost during the period 1968˗2015 (1.19×106 m3). The results show that in the presence of heavy ship traffic, ship-channel interactions can dominate the morphodynamics of a waterway and its margins. The analysis enables a better understanding of how shallow-water systems react to the human activities in the post-industrial period. An adequate evaluation of the temporal and spatial variation of shoreline position is also crucial for the development of future scenarios and for the sustainable management port traffic worldwide

    SHIPWORMS AND THE MAKING OF THE AMERICAN COASTLINE

    This dissertation tells the forgotten history of the American teredo epidemic. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, an assortment of native and invasive wood-boring marine organisms, known collectively as “teredo,” swept through the ports and harbors of the United States. Teredo’s penchant for wood, both for shelter and sustenance, made wharves and wooden ships easy targets. Because teredo enters timber as tiny juveniles, and grows to maturity beyond view, it was often detectable only after a wharf had collapsed or a ship had sunk. Teredo’s unpredictability grated on people so much so that the borer was rarely mentioned apart from the ominous saying, “the ravages of the teredo.” At the turn of the twentieth century, teredo frustrated coastal people immensely, and they responded to the epidemic in a variety of ways. Developing freshwater estuaries and filling tidelands were common adaptations to borers, and have given many coastal landscapes the look they have today. But the epidemic wasn’t only about people fighting borers; shipworms also drove a wedge between people. For instance, teredo-free port communities liked to criticize teredo-infested harbors. This sort of “teredo-slandering” became common along the west coast, where cities all tried to stand out. So reviled were borers that the word “teredo” even became a widely used pejorative metaphor that captured the resentment that people felt towards society. “Teredo” could mean everything from “furtive” to “ruthless” and could be flung at people of different political leanings and even ethnicities. The epidemic, in short, was just as much about people as teredo. By the mid-twentieth century, science and technology caught up to teredo. Steel hulled ships, improved timber treatments, and better understandings of woodborer biology and ecology all helped to lessen teredo’s ravages. After San Francisco Bay and New England were hit with costly woodborer attacks, the federal government finally stepped in and organized research, first through the National Research Council, and then by the Bureau of Docks and Yards. After WWII, professional woodborer researchers helped bring the teredo epidemic to an end. Resurrecting this forgotten epidemic underscores the need for more marine and coastal environmental histories

    We used satellite-derived sea-surface-temperature (SST) data along with in-situ data collected along a meridional transect between 18.85 and 20.25°N along 69.2°E to describe the evolution of an SST filament and front during 25 November to 1 December in the northeastern Arabian Sea (NEAS). Both features were &#8764; 100 km long, lasted about a week and were associated with weak temperature gradients (&#8764; 0.07°C km<sup>−1</sup>). The in-situ data were collected first using a suite of surface sensors during a north–south mapping of this transect and showed the existence of a chlorophyll maximum within the filament. This surface data acquisition was followed by a high-resolution south–north CTD (conductivity–temperature–depth) sampling along the transect. In the two days that elapsed between the two in-situ measurements, the filament had shrunk in size and moved northward. In general, the current direction was northwestward and advected these mesoscale features. The CTD data also showed an SST front towards the northern end of the transect. In both these features, the chlorophyll concentration was higher than in the surrounding waters. The temperature and salinity data from the CTD suggest upward mixing or pumping of water from the base of the mixed layer, where a chlorophyll maximum was present, into the mixed layer that was about 60 m thick. A striking diurnal cycle was evident in the chlorophyll concentration, with higher values tending to occur closer to the surface during the night. The in-situ data from both surface sensors and CTD, and so also satellite-derived chlorophyll data, showed higher chlorophyll concentration, particularly at sub-surface levels, between the filament and the front, but there was no corresponding signature in the temperature and salinity data. Analysis of the SST fronts in the satellite data shows that fronts weaker than those associated with the filament and the front had crossed the transect in this region a day or two preceding the sampling of the front
