    An Agent-Based Modelling Simulation Approach to Calculate Processing Delay of GEO Satellite Payload

    The global coverage of broadband multimedia and internet-based services in terrestrial-satellite networks demand particular interests for satellite providers in order to enhance services with low latencies and high signal quality to diverse users. In particular, the delay of on-board processing is an inherent source of latency in a satellite communication that sometimes is discarded for the end-to-end delay of the satellite link. The frame work for this paper includes modelling of an on-orbit satellite payload using an agent model that can reproduce the properties of processing delays. In essence, a comparison of different spatial interpolation methods is carried out to evaluate physical data obtained by an GEO satellite in order to define a discretization function for determining that delay. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed agent and the development of a delay discretization function are together validated by simulating an hybrid satellite and terrestrial network. Simulation results show high accuracy according to the characteristics of initial data points of processing delay for Ku bands

    Transport layer protocols and architectures for satellite networks

    Designing efficient transmission mechanisms for advanced satellite networks is a demanding task, requiring the definition and the implementation of protocols and architectures well suited to this challenging environment. In particular, transport protocols performance over satellite networks is impaired by the characteristics of the satellite radio link, specifically by the long propagation delay and the possible presence of segment losses due to physical channel errors. The level of impact on performance depends upon the link design (type of constellation, link margin, coding and modulation) and operational conditions (link obstructions, terminal mobility, weather conditions, etc.). To address these critical aspects a number of possible solutions have been presented in the literature, ranging from limited modifications of standard protocols (e.g. TCP, transmission control protocol) to completely alternative protocol and network architectures. However, despite the great number of different proposals (or perhaps also because of it), the general framework appears quite fragmented and there is a compelling need of an integration of the research competences and efforts. This is actually the intent of the transport protocols research line within the European SatNEx (Satellite Network of Excellence) project. Stemming from the authors' work on this project, this paper aims to provide the reader with an updated overview of all the possible approaches that can be pursued to overcome the limitations of current transport protocols and architectures, when applied to satellite communications. In the paper the possible solutions are classified in the following categories: optimization of TCP interactions with lower layers, TCP enhancements, performance enhancement proxies (PEP) and delay tolerant networks (DTN). Advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches, as well as their interactions, are investigated and discussed, taking into account performance improvement, complexity, and compliance to the standard semantics. From this analysis, it emerges that DTN architectures could integrate some of the most efficient solutions from the other categories, by inserting them in a new rigorous framework. These innovative architectures therefore may represent a promising solution for solving some of the important problems posed at the transport layer by satellite networks, at least in a medium-to-long-term perspective.     Enhancing QUIC over Satellite Networks

    The use of Satellite Communication (SATCOM) networks for broadband connectivity has recently seen an increase in popularity due to, among other factors, the rise of the latest generations of cellular networks (5G/6G) and the deployment of high-throughput satellites. In parallel, major advances have been witnessed in the context of the transport layer: first, the standardization and early deployment of QUIC, a new-generation and general-purpose transport protocol; and second, modern congestion control proposals such as the Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR) algorithm. Even though satellite links introduce several challenges for transport layer mechanisms, mainly due to their long propagation delay, satellite Internet providers have relied on TCP connection-splitting solutions implemented by Performance-Enhancing Proxies (PEPs) to greatly overcome many of these challenges. However, due to QUIC's fully encrypted nature, these performance-boosting solutions become nearly impossible for QUIC traffic, leaving it in great disadvantage when competing against TCP-PEP. In this context, IETF QUIC WG contributors are currently investigating this matter and suggesting new solutions that can help improve QUIC's performance over SATCOM.     Small satellites and CubeSats: survey of structures, architectures, and protocols

    The space environment is still challenging but is becoming more and more attractive for an increasing number of entities. In the second half of the 20th century, a huge amount of funds was required to build satellites and gain access to space. Nowadays, it is no longer so. The advancement of technologies allows producing very small hardware components able to survive the strict conditions of the outer space. Consequently, small satellites can be designed for a wide set of missions keeping low design times, production costs, and deployment costs. One widely used type of small satellite is the CubeSat, whose different aspects are surveyed in the following: mission goals, hardware subsystems and components, possible network topologies, channel models, and suitable communication protocols. We also show some future challenges related to the employment of CubeSat networks

    Study on Large-scale Terrestrial Relaying of Satellite Broadcasted Real-time Multimedia Streams

    none2The chapter describes an architecture to relay on demand a real-time IP multicast audio-video stream broadcasted by a satellite on a terrestrial link. The stream is received by suitably equipped sites and then relayed to other sites that are not equipped with satellite receiving hardware but are nonetheless willing to receive the stream. By exploiting the properties of satellite transmission and adopting a hybrid satellite/terrestrial, multicast/unicast approach, the described architecture allows to overcome the restrictions suffered by multicast traffic in the global Internet, allowing it to scale easily across autonomous systems.     Improving Network Performance, Security and Robustness in Hybrid Wireless Networks Using a Satellite Overlay

    In this thesis we propose that the addition of a satellite overlay to large or dense wireless networks will result in improvement in application performance and network reliability, and also enable efficient security solutions that are well-suited for wireless nodes with limited resources. We term the combined network as a hybrid wireless network. Through analysis, network modeling and simulation, we quantify the improvement in end-to-end performance in such networks, compared to flat wireless networks. We also propose a new analytical method for modeling and estimating the performance of hybrid wireless networks. We create a loss network model for hybrid networks using the hierarchical reduced loss network model, adapted for packet-switched networks. Applying a fixed point approximation method on the set of relations modeling the hierarchical loss network, we derive a solution that converges to a fixed point for the parameter set. We analyze the sensitivity of the performance metric to variations in the network parameters by applying Automatic Differentiation to the performance model. We thus develop a method for parameter optimization and sensitivity analysis of protocols for designing hybrid networks. We investigate how the satellite overlay can help to implement better solutions for secure group communications in hybrid wireless networks. We propose a source authentication protocol for multicast communications that makes intelligent use of the satellite overlay, by modifying and extending TESLA certificates. We also propose a probabilistic non-repudiation technique that uses the satellite as a proxy node. We describe how the authentication protocol can be integrated with a topology-aware hierarchical multicast routing protocol to design a secure multicast routing protocol that is robust to active attacks. Lastly, we examine how the end-to-end delay is adversely affected when IP Security protocol (IPSEC) and Secure Socket Layer protocol (SSL) are applied to unicast communications in hybrid networks. For network-layer security with low delay, we propose the use of the Layered IPSEC protocol, with a modified Internet Key Exchange protocol. For secure web browsing with low delay, we propose the Dual-mode SSL protocol. We present simulation results to quantify the performance improvement with our proposed protocols, compared to the traditional solutions

    TRANSPORT PROTOCOL AND FLOW CONTROL FOR IP-BASED BROADBAND AERONAUTICAL SATELLITE NETWORKS

    The IP-based broadband aeronautical satellite network will provide numerous new applications and services for both airspace system operations and passenger communications. However, the interoperation between a satellite system and the exiting terrestrial Internet infrastructure introduces new challenges. In this thesis, we recommend suitable transport protocols for an aeronautical network supporting Internet and data services via satellite. We study the future IP-based aeronautical satellite hybrid network and focus on the problems that cause dramatically degraded performance of the Transport Protocol. Based on the observation that it is difficult for an end-to-end TCP solution to solve the performance problem effectively, we proposed a new splitting based transport protocol, called Aeronautical Transport Control Protocol (AeroTCP). The main idea of AeroTCP is the fixed window flow control, adaptive congestion control, and super fast error control.
