Astrometric telescope facility. Preliminary systems definition study. Volume 3: Cost estimate
The results of the Astrometric Telescope Facility (ATF) Preliminary System Definition Study conducted in the period between March and September 1986 are described. The main body of the report consists primarily of the charts presented at the study final review which was held at NASA Ames Research Center on July 30 and 31, 1986. The charts have been revised to reflect the results of that review. Explanations for the charts are provided on the adjoining pages where required. Note that charts which have been changed or added since the review are dated 10/1/86; unchanged charts carry the review date 7/30/86. In addition, a narrative summary is presented of the study results and two appendices. The first appendix is a copy of the ATF Characteristics and Requirements Document generated as part of the study. The second appendix shows the inputs to the Space Station Mission Requirements Data Base submitted in May 1986. The report is issued in three volumes. Volume 1 contains an executive summary of the ATF mission, strawman design, and study results. Volume 2 contains the detailed study information. Volume 3 has the ATF cost estimate, and will have limited distribution
Two-nucleon scattering in multiple partial waves
We determine scattering phase shifts for S,P,D, and F partial wave channels
in two-nucleon systems using lattice QCD methods. We use a generalization of
Luscher's finite volume method to determine infinite volume phase shifts from a
set of finite volume ground- and excited-state energy levels on two volumes,
V=(3.4 fm)^3 and V=(4.5 fm)^3. The calculations are performed in the
SU(3)-flavor limit, corresponding to a pion mass of approximately 800 MeV. From
the energy dependence of the phase shifts we are able to extract scattering

Seasat. Volume 3: Ground systems
The Seasat Project was a feasibility demonstration of the use of orbital remote sensing for global ocean observation. The satellite was launched in June of 1978 and was operated successfully until October 1978. A massive electrical failure occurred in the power system, terminating the mission prematurely. The ground systems using during the mission life are discussed. Descriptions of the operating organization, the system elements, and the testing program are included. The various phases of the mission: launch and orbit insertion; cruise; and calibration are discussed. A special section is included on the orbit maneuver activites. Operations during the satellite failure are reviewed and summarized
Geodesic systems of tunnels in hyperbolic 3-manifolds
It is unknown whether an unknotting tunnel is always isotopic to a geodesic
in a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold. In this paper, we address the
generalization of this problem to hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting tunnel
systems. We show that there exist finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds with a
single cusp, with a system of at least two tunnels, such that all but one of
the tunnels come arbitrarily close to self-intersecting. This gives evidence
that systems of unknotting tunnels may not be isotopic to geodesics in tunnel
number n manifolds. In order to show this result, we prove there is a
geometrically finite hyperbolic structure on a (1;n)-compression body with a
system of core tunnels such that all but one of the core tunnels
