A Unified Solution for the Integration of Media Applications and Products in Broadcaster Environments-The ASSET Architecture
The ASSET project, an European funded project, is defining and developing a
software architecture that will be made available to manufacturers for allowing easy
interfacing between digital television equipment and applications. The project partners
(Compaq-HP Group, THOMSON, Dalet ann, INESC Porto, INRIA, Institut fuer
Rundfunktechnik, Front Porch Digital International, SHS Multimedia) are creating an
universal and unified system architecture that shall make the integration of different systems
easier. This paper gives an overview of the project approach, describes the system
architecture and the prototype under development.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Software for configuration of a video server
A video server is the multimedia equivalent of a data file server. As video goes digital video servers that support digital media are required for production and broadcasting in television companies. Grass Valley Group provides comprehensive digital video solutions through a range of video servers called Profiles.
The Profile Media Platform provides a multi-channel, high bandwidth platform for the storage and manipulation of video and audio in professional applications. It has a wide range of capabilities, from a stand-alone digital disk recorder to being part of a large network of video servers.
In this project, I have designed and implemented software to add new functionality to software used for the configuration of the Profile. A Profile system administrator uses this software to set up a Profile before it can be used for production and broadcasting.2001 best estimate for issue date and commencement year based on available information

Challenges of digital innovations : a set-top box based approach
The chapter analyses the challenges of digital technology for television audience measurement systems. First, the current state of audience measurement in Belgium is described. In the Belgian case, the traditional television audience measurement system is contested by small broadcasters and challenged by the opportunities that the emergence of digital television and, more specifically, the widespread diffusion of set-top boxes provide. Second, three major challenges for traditional measurement techniques are analysed. This section deals with people’s changing viewing habits, for example on-demand and time-shifted viewing, the provision of more accurate data by set-top boxes, and the increasing interests of platform operators acting as gatekeepers to access to this data. In the final section, conclusions are made
Interactive television or enhanced televisiion? : the Dutch users interest in applications of ITV via set-top boxes
This paper is both an analysis of the phenomenon of interactive television with background concepts of interactivity and television and a report of an empirical investigation among Dutch users of set-top-box ITV. In the analytic part a distinction is made between levels of interactivity in the applications of ITV. Activities labelled as selection, customisation, transaction and reaction reveal low levels of interactivity. They may be called ‘enhanced television’. They are extensions of existing television programmes that keep their linear character. Activities called production and conversation have the potential of higher interactivity. They may lead to ‘real’ interactive television as the user input makes a difference to programmes. It is suggested that so-called hybrid ITV– TV combined with telephone and email reply channels- and (broadband) Internet ITV offer better opportunities for high interactivity than set-top-box ITV. \ud
The empirical investigation shows that the demand of subscribers to set-top-box ITV in the Netherlands matches supply. They favour the less interactive applications of selection and reaction. Other striking results are that young subscribers appreciate interactive applications more than the older ones and that those with a low level of education prefer these applications more than high educated subscribers. No significant gender differences were found
Wireless Play and Unexpected Innovation
Part of the Volume on Digital Young, Innovation, and the Unexpected. This chapter considers play as leading to unexpected innovation in advanced wireless technologies. It concludes that much of the potential for new media to enhance innovation actually echoes much older patterns, as evidenced by comparisons to wireless history. These are patterns of privilege, particularly class and gender privilege, reinforced by strict intellectual property protections. Detailed case studies are presented of the "wardrivers," young male computer enthusiasts who helped map wi-fi signals over the past decade, and of earlier analog wireless enthusiasts. The chapter offers a solid critique of many present-day celebrations of technology-driven innovation and of the rhetoric of participatory culture
