    The design and simulation of an autonomous system for aircraft maintenance scheduling

    International audienceOperational support is a key issue for aircraft maintenance, which aims to improve operational efficiency and reduce operating costs under the premise of ensuring flight safety. Although many works have emerged to achieve this aim, they mostly address the concept of maintenance systems, the relationship between stakeholders and the loop of maintenance information separately. Hence, the cooperation between stakeholders could be impeded especially when urgent decisions should be made, relying on historical data and real-time data. In this paper, we propose an innovative design of an autonomous system supporting the automatic decision-making for maintenance scheduling. The design starts from the proposition of the analysis framework, to concept formulation of the system, to information transitional level interface, and ends with an instance of system module interactions. The underlying architecture illustrates the high-level fusion of technical and business drives; optimizes strategies and plans with regard to maintenance costs, service level and reliability. An agent-based simulation system is developed as a proof to illustrate the feasibility of the system principle and algorithms. Furthermore, the simulation experiment analyzing the impact of maintenance sequence strategies on maintenance costs and service level has demonstrated the algorithm functionality and the feasibility of the proposed approach

    Decision-making for unmanned aerial vehicle operation in icing conditions

    With the increased use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for civil and commercial applications, there is a strong demand for new regulations and technology that will eventually permit for the integration of UAS in unsegregated airspace. This requires new technology to ensure sufficient safety and a smooth integration process. The absence of a pilot on board a vehicle introduces new problems that do not arise in manned flight. One challenging and safety-critical issue is flight in known icing conditions. Whereas in manned flight, dealing with icing is left to the pilot and his appraisal of the situation at hand; in unmanned flight, this is no longer an option and new solutions are required. To address this, an icing-related decision-making system (IRDMS) is proposed. The system quantifies in-flight icing based on changes in aircraft performance and measurements of environmental properties, and evaluates what the effects on the aircraft are. Based on this, it determines whether the aircraft can proceed, and whether and which available icing protection systems should be activated. In this way, advice on an appropriate response is given to the operator on the ground, to ensure safe continuation of the flight and avoid possible accidents

    A multi-agent autonomous system for exploration of hazardous or inaccessible locations. The multi-agent autonomous system includes simple surface-based agents or craft controlled by an airborne tracking and command system. The airborne tracking and command system includes an instrument suite used to image an operational area and any craft deployed within the operational area. The image data is used to identify the craft, targets for exploration, and obstacles in the operational area. The tracking and command system determines paths for the surface-based craft using the identified targets and obstacles and commands the craft using simple movement commands to move through the operational area to the targets while avoiding the obstacles. Each craft includes its own instrument suite to collect information about the operational area that is transmitted back to the tracking and command system. The tracking and command system may be further coupled to a satellite system to provide additional image information about the operational area and provide operational and location commands to the tracking and command system

    A Localized Autonomous Control Algorithm For Robots With Heterogeneous Capabilities In A Multi-Tier Architecture

    This dissertation makes two contributions to the use of the Blackboard Architecture for command. The use of boundary nodes for data abstraction is introduced and the use of a solver-based blackboard system with pruning is proposed. It also makes contributions advancing the engineering design process in the area of command system selection for heterogeneous robotic systems. It presents and analyzes data informing decision making between centralized and distributed command systems and also characterizes the efficacy of pruning across different experimental scenarios, demonstrating when it is effective or not. Finally, it demonstrates the operations of the system, raising the technology readiness level (TRL) of the technology towards a level suitable for actual mission use. The context for this work is a multi-tier mission architecture, based on prior work by Fink on a “tier scalable” architecture. This work took a top-down approach where the superior tiers (in terms of scope of visibility) send specific commands to craft in lower tiers. While benefitting from the use of a large centralized processing center, this approach is limited in responding to failures and interference. The work presented herein has involved developing and comparatively characterizing centralized and decentralized (where superior nodes provide information and goals to the lower-level craft, but decisions are made locally) Blackboard Architecture based command systems. Blackboard Architecture advancements (a solver, pruning, boundary nodes) have been made and tested under multiple experimental conditions

    Service-oriented agent architecture for autonomous maritime vehicles

    Advanced ocean systems are increasing their capabilities and the degree of autonomy more and more in order to perform more sophisticated maritime missions. Remotely operated vehicles are no longer cost-effective since they are limited by economic support costs, and the presence and skills of the human operator. Alternatively, autonomous surface and underwater vehicles have the potential to operate with greatly reduced overhead costs and level of operator intervention. This Thesis proposes an Intelligent Control Architecture (ICA) to enable multiple collaborating marine vehicles to autonomously carry out underwater intervention missions. The ICA is generic in nature but aimed at a case study where a marine surface craft and an underwater vehicle are required to work cooperatively. They are capable of cooperating autonomously towards the execution of complex activities since they have different but complementary capabilities. The architectural foundation to achieve the ICA lays on the flexibility of service-oriented computing and agent technology. An ontological database captures the operator skills, platform capabilities and, changes in the environment. The information captured, stored as knowledge, enables reasoning agents to plan missions based on the current situation. The ICA implementation is verified in simulation, and validated in trials by means of a team of autonomous marine robots. This Thesis also presents architectural details and evaluation scenarios of the ICA, results of simulations and trials from different maritime operations, and future research directions

    Novelty Accommodating Multi-Agent Planning in High Fidelity Simulated Open World

    Autonomous agents acting in real-world environments often need to reason with unknown novelties interfering with their plan execution. Novelty is an unexpected phenomenon that can alter the core characteristics, composition, and dynamics of the environment. Novelty can occur at any time in any sufficiently complex environment without any prior notice or explanation. Previous studies show that novelty has catastrophic impact on agent performance. Intelligent agents reason with an internal model of the world to understand the intricacies of their environment and to successfully execute their plans. The introduction of novelty into the environment usually renders their internal model inaccurate and the generated plans no longer applicable. Novelty is particularly prevalent in the real world where domain-specific and even predicted novelty-specific approaches are used to mitigate the novelty's impact. In this work, we demonstrate that a domain-independent AI agent designed to detect, characterize, and accommodate novelty in smaller-scope physics-based games such as Angry Birds and Cartpole can be adapted to successfully perform and reason with novelty in realistic high-fidelity simulator of the military domain
