Trajectory Aware Macro-cell Planning for Mobile Users
We design and evaluate algorithms for efficient user-mobility driven
macro-cell planning in cellular networks. As cellular networks embrace
heterogeneous technologies (including long range 3G/4G and short range WiFi,
Femto-cells, etc.), most traffic generated by static users gets absorbed by the
short-range technologies, thereby increasingly leaving mobile user traffic to
macro-cells. To this end, we consider a novel approach that factors in the
trajectories of mobile users as well as the impact of city geographies and
their associated road networks for macro-cell planning. Given a budget k of
base-stations that can be upgraded, our approach selects a deployment that
impacts the most number of user trajectories. The generic formulation
incorporates the notion of quality of service of a user trajectory as a
parameter to allow different application-specific requirements, and operator
choices.We show that the proposed trajectory utility maximization problem is
NP-hard, and design multiple heuristics. We evaluate our algorithms with real
and synthetic data sets emulating different city geographies to demonstrate
their efficacy. For instance, with an upgrade budget k of 20%, our algorithms
perform 3-8 times better in improving the user quality of service on
trajectories in different city geographies when compared to greedy
location-based base-station upgrades.Comment: Published in INFOCOM 201
Massive MIMO-based Localization and Mapping Exploiting Phase Information of Multipath Components
In this paper, we present a robust multipath-based localization and mapping
framework that exploits the phases of specular multipath components (MPCs)
using a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array at the base
station. Utilizing the phase information related to the propagation distances
of the MPCs enables the possibility of localization with extraordinary accuracy
even with limited bandwidth. The specular MPC parameters along with the
parameters of the noise and the dense multipath component (DMC) are tracked
using an extended Kalman filter (EKF), which enables to preserve the
distance-related phase changes of the MPC complex amplitudes. The DMC comprises
all non-resolvable MPCs, which occur due to finite measurement aperture. The
estimation of the DMC parameters enhances the estimation quality of the
specular MPCs and therefore also the quality of localization and mapping. The
estimated MPC propagation distances are subsequently used as input to a
distance-based localization and mapping algorithm. This algorithm does not need
prior knowledge about the surrounding environment and base station position.
The performance is demonstrated with real radio-channel measurements using an
antenna array with 128 ports at the base station side and a standard cellular
signal bandwidth of 40 MHz. The results show that high accuracy localization is

Indoor wireless communications and applications
Chapter 3 addresses challenges in radio link and system design in indoor scenarios. Given the fact that most human activities take place in indoor environments, the need for supporting ubiquitous indoor data connectivity and location/tracking service becomes even more important than in the previous decades. Specific technical challenges addressed in this section are(i), modelling complex indoor radio channels for effective antenna deployment, (ii), potential of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radios for supporting higher data rates, and (iii), feasible indoor localisation and tracking techniques, which are summarised in three dedicated sections of this chapter
A synthetic library of RNA control modules for predictable tuning of gene expression in yeast
Advances in synthetic biology have resulted in the development of genetic tools that support the design of complex biological systems encoding desired functions. The majority of efforts have focused on the development of regulatory tools in bacteria, whereas fewer tools exist for the tuning of expression levels in eukaryotic organisms. Here, we describe a novel class of RNA-based control modules that provide predictable tuning of expression levels in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A library of synthetic control modules that act through posttranscriptional RNase cleavage mechanisms was generated through an in vivo screen, in which structural engineering methods were applied to enhance the insulation and modularity of the resulting components. This new class of control elements can be combined with any promoter to support titration of regulatory strategies encoded in transcriptional regulators and thus more sophisticated control schemes. We applied these synthetic controllers to the systematic titration of flux through the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway, providing insight into endogenous control strategies and highlighting the utility of this control module library for manipulating and probing biological systems

The GPS Assimilator: a Method for Upgrading Existing GPS User Equipment to Improve Accuracy, Robustness, and Resistance to Spoofing

Portland, OR, September 21–24, 2010A conceptual method is presented for upgrading existing GPS user equipment, without requiring hardware or software modifications to the equipment, to improve the equipment’s position, velocity, and time (PVT) accuracy, to increase its PVT robustness in weak-signal or jammed environments, and to protect the equipment from counterfeit GPS signals (GPS spoofing). The method is embodied in a device called the GPS Assimilator that couples to the radio frequency (RF) input of an existing GPS receiver. The Assimilator extracts navigation and timing information from RF signals in its environment—including non-GNSS signals—and from direct baseband aiding provided, for example, by an inertial navigation system, a
frequency reference, or the GPS user. The Assimilator optimally fuses the collective navigation and timing information to produce a PVT solution which, by virtue of the diverse navigation and timing sources on which it is based, is highly accurate and inherently robust to GPS signal obstruction and jamming. The Assimilator embeds the PVT solution in a synthesized set of GPS signals and injects
