    Sonic Explorations in Divergent Landscapes

This document presents a portfolio of ten composition projects produced between September 2010 and June 2014 created by composer Jon Hughes working in collaboration with a number of artists and researchers. Each individual chapter deals with a separate project, and is accompanied by a Data Drive presented alongside the text as an integral part of the submission. This contains audio, video and other supplementary material. There is also an introductory essay, Chapter 1: Footprints and Philosophy: Sonic Explorations in Divergent Landscapes, designed to set the composition portfolio in context. Although contrasting in terms of content and media, the ten works presented here share a number of common conceptual threads. They all involve the use of sound to reveal, uncover, communicate, and to map hidden aspects of the subject matter explored with each individual project, whether that be mathematical principles (Phase Revival), the shared experience of landscape (Terrarium, Hydrology, Another Place), principles from evolutionary biology (Transmission), or the rich complexity of shared acoustic space (A Dip in the Lake). A further related common thread is the use of large-scale ambisonic speaker arrays (Terrarium, A Dip in the Lake, Phase Revival, Sonic Horizons, Hydrology). This gave production teams the ability to create fully immersive audio/visual environments in which hidden themes and concepts referred to above could be better communicated. Working together with fellow collaborators, it thus became possible to create cultural interventions in the form of portable, immersive public spaces. Other themes explored in the portfolio include the use of found sound, and the exploration of landscape narrative. Found sound is used extensively, in combination with instrumental and vocal material

    Diskursus Musik Dalam Pendidikan

The book contains essays on current issues in arts and humanities in which peoples and cultures compete as well as collaborate in globalizing the world while maintaining their uniqueness as viewed from cross- and inter-disciplinary perspectives. The book covers areas such as literature, cultural studies, archaeology, philosophy, history, language studies, information and literacy studies, and area studies. Asia and the Pacific are the particular regions that the conference focuses on as they have become new centers of knowledge production in arts and humanities and, in the future, seem to be able to grow significantly as a major contributor of culture, science and arts to the globalized world. The book will help shed light on what arts and humanities scholars in Asia and the Pacific have done in terms of research and knowledge development, as well as the new frontiers of research that have been explored and opening up, which can connect the two regions with the rest of the globe

Risky hospitality: mission in the aftermath of religious communal violence in Indonesia

Dissertation (Th. D.)--Boston University, 2011.This dissertation argues that in the aftermath of religious communal violence in Indonesia, Christian mission practice should take the form of hospitality. A fundamental Christian tradition, hospitality has been theologically reclaimed in recent decades and has become central to the contemporary discourse on mission and religious pluralism. This dissertation particularizes the broader discourse by identifying the missiological dimension of local Indonesian hospitality as a vital Christian interreligious practice in the aftermath of religious communal violence. A Standardized Approach to Analyzing Multi-cultural Presentations of Christian Worship

    Get PDF
With the growth of the internet, worship pastors can share fine art presentations of the gospel message from cultures worldwide. Since all cultures belong in the kingdom of God, pastors may struggle to validate fine arts performances according to scriptural standards. One of the concerns is the range of interpretations that come from a lack of formal analysis in the literature. Some critics write about fine arts performances based on their own experience and opinion. This may indicate a gap in literature where there is no uniform standard for evaluating those works. Rather than take time to research presentations, a worship pastor may accept the opinion of a person who is not trained to make artistic or scriptural judgments. This lack of a coherent standard may lead to interpretations that allow syncretism to flourish or a misunderstood biblical message. This research shows that the Bible is the authority over artistic presentations and that a person can use a systematic approach to validate these presentations. Individuals in the fine arts field will argue that all work is created as a matter of personal aesthetics. While this may be true in the secular world, a worship leader must maintain a proper discipline of biblical authority. In this study, an ethnographic, qualitative/correlational method will be used to demonstrate the need for a uniform approach to describing, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating works of Christian fine arts

The purpose of this research is to develop learning tools as well as test the effectiveness of the implementation of anti-corruption education. The research method refers to the development of procedural models, which is descriptive, that shows the steps to produce a product that is effectively used at schools, not to test theories. The research procedures of every stage of development were done through expert assessment, individual assessment, group assessment, and field assessment. The model system approach, which was done to the formative evaluation measures, was developed by Dick & Carey. The trials included learning experts assessment, content experts assessment, learning media experts assessment, individual assessment, group assessment, and field assessment. The results of the assessment trials were used as an input to improve product development which was conducted using the t test (Paired Samples Test) to determine the effectiveness of the teaching materials. Descriptive quantitative analysis techniques were used to compare the competence of students before and after the use of teaching materials through the pretest and posttest which showed significant results, namely the difference in the value of pretest and posttest. It means anti-corruption education teaching materials are very effectively implemented to the students

The Javanese local wisdom described in Murwakala performed in the oral tradition of ruwatan

Abstract: This paper discusses the local wisdom described in Murwakala performed in the oral tradition of Ruwatan . Ruwatan is the Javanese traditional ceremony done in order to release the Sukerta ’s life from Bathara Kala ’s threat. There are certain groups of people who believe that ruwatan is a ceremony that has to be done by the Sukerta ; if they have not done it, they think that they have not done their responsibility and if they cannot do that, they will suffer from Bathara Kala ’s threat (Subalidinata, 1985: 3). Ruwatan was done for the first time in the 17th century; then, it has been done continually every year, from generation to generation up to recent days. It shows the interesting literary phenomenon that Murwakala which was rooted in Javanese culture can be understood and believed by not only Javanese but also other tribes in Indonesia. It is reasonable because Murwakala is assumed to show the Javanese local wisdom related to human existence and it is described through the characters of Murwakala . To find out this local wisdom, the writer used the theory of post-structuralism of narrative proposed by Jonathan Culler in which there are two steps of analyzing the narration. These steps are usually called double logic: by considering the text as a discourse and revealing the significance of the text based on the text’s thematic structure
