    Stepping Stones to Inductive Synthesis of Low-Level Looping Programs

    Inductive program synthesis, from input/output examples, can provide an opportunity to automatically create programs from scratch without presupposing the algorithmic form of the solution. For induction of general programs with loops (as opposed to loop-free programs, or synthesis for domain-specific languages), the state of the art is at the level of introductory programming assignments. Most problems that require algorithmic subtlety, such as fast sorting, have remained out of reach without the benefit of significant problem-specific background knowledge. A key challenge is to identify cues that are available to guide search towards correct looping programs. We present MAKESPEARE, a simple delayed-acceptance hillclimbing method that synthesizes low-level looping programs from input/output examples. During search, delayed acceptance bypasses small gains to identify significantly-improved stepping stone programs that tend to generalize and enable further progress. The method performs well on a set of established benchmarks, and succeeds on the previously unsolved "Collatz Numbers" program synthesis problem. Additional benchmarks include the problem of rapidly sorting integer arrays, in which we observe the emergence of comb sort (a Shell sort variant that is empirically fast). MAKESPEARE has also synthesized a record-setting program on one of the puzzles from the TIS-100 assembly language programming game.Comment: AAAI 201

    Sciduction: Combining Induction, Deduction, and Structure for Verification and Synthesis

    Even with impressive advances in automated formal methods, certain problems in system verification and synthesis remain challenging. Examples include the verification of quantitative properties of software involving constraints on timing and energy consumption, and the automatic synthesis of systems from specifications. The major challenges include environment modeling, incompleteness in specifications, and the complexity of underlying decision problems. This position paper proposes sciduction, an approach to tackle these challenges by integrating inductive inference, deductive reasoning, and structure hypotheses. Deductive reasoning, which leads from general rules or concepts to conclusions about specific problem instances, includes techniques such as logical inference and constraint solving. Inductive inference, which generalizes from specific instances to yield a concept, includes algorithmic learning from examples. Structure hypotheses are used to define the class of artifacts, such as invariants or program fragments, generated during verification or synthesis. Sciduction constrains inductive and deductive reasoning using structure hypotheses, and actively combines inductive and deductive reasoning: for instance, deductive techniques generate examples for learning, and inductive reasoning is used to guide the deductive engines. We illustrate this approach with three applications: (i) timing analysis of software; (ii) synthesis of loop-free programs, and (iii) controller synthesis for hybrid systems.     Loop pipelining with resource and timing constraints

    Developing efficient programs for many of the current parallel computers is not easy due to the architectural complexity of those machines. The wide variety of machine organizations often makes it more difficult to port an existing program than to reprogram it completely. Therefore, powerful translators are necessary to generate effective code and free the programmer from concerns about the specific characteristics of the target machine. This work focuses on techniques to be used by an important class of translators, whose objective is to transform sequential programs into equivalent more parallel programs. The transformations are performed at instruction level in order to exploit low level parallelism and increase memory locality.Most of the current applications are programmed in languages which do not allow us to express parallelism between high-level sentences (as Pascal, C or Fortran). Furthermore, a lot of applications written ten or more years ago are still used today, and it is not feasible to rewrite such applications for many reasons (not only technical reasons, but also economic ones). Translators enable programmers to write the application in a familiar sequential programming language, without concerning their selves with the architecture of the target machine. Current compilers for parallel architectures not only translate a program written on a high-level language to the appropriate machine language, but also perform some transformations in the final code in order to execute the program in a more parallel way. The transformations improve the performance in the execution of the program by making use of the knowledge that the compiler has about the machine architecture. The semantics of the program remain intact after any transformation.Experiments show that limiting parallelization to basic blocks not included in loops limits maximum speedup. This is because loops often comprise a large portion of the parallelism available to be exploited in a program. For this reason, a lot of effort has been devoted in the recent years to parallelize loop execution. Several parallel computer architectures and compilation techniques have been proposed to exploit such a parallelism at different granularities. Multiprocessors exploit coarse grained parallelism by distributing entire loop iterations to different processors. Systems oriented to the high-level synthesis (HLS) of VLSI circuits, superscalar processors and very long instruction word (VLIW) processors exploit fine-grained parallelism at instruction level. This work addresses fine-grained parallelization of loops addressed to the HLS of VLSI circuits. Two algorithms are proposed for resource constraints and for timing constraints. An algorithm to reduce the number of registers required to execute a loop in a given architecture is also proposed.Postprint (published version

    High-level synthesis of fine-grained weakly consistent C concurrency

    High-level synthesis (HLS) is the process of automatically compiling high-level programs into a netlist (collection of gates). Given an input program, HLS tools exploit its inherent parallelism and pipelining opportunities to generate efficient customised hardware. C-based programs are the most popular input for HLS tools, but these tools historically only synthesise sequential C programs. As the appeal for software concurrency rises, HLS tools are beginning to synthesise concurrent C programs, such as C/C++ pthreads and OpenCL. Although supporting software concurrency leads to better hardware parallelism, shared memory synchronisation is typically serialised to ensure correct memory behaviour, via locks. Locks are safety resources that ensure exclusive access of shared memory, eliminating data races and providing synchronisation guarantees for programmers.  As an alternative to lock-based synchronisation, the C memory model also defines the possibility of lock-free synchronisation via fine-grained atomic operations (`atomics'). However, most HLS tools either do not support atomics at all or implement atomics using locks. Instead, we treat the synthesis of atomics as a scheduling problem. We show that we can augment the intra-thread memory constraints during memory scheduling of concurrent programs to support atomics. On average, hardware generated by our method is 7.5x faster than the state-of-the-art, for our set of experiments. Our method of synthesising atomics enables several unique possibilities. Chiefly, we are capable of supporting weakly consistent (`weak') atomics, which necessitate fewer ordering constraints compared to sequentially consistent (SC) atomics. However, implementing weak atomics is complex and error-prone and hence we formally verify our methods via automated model checking to ensure our generated hardware is correct. Furthermore, since the C memory model defines memory behaviour globally, we can globally analyse the entire program to generate its memory constraints. Additionally, we can also support loop pipelining by extending our methods to generate inter-iteration memory constraints. On average, weak atomics, global analysis and loop pipelining improve performance by 1.6x, 3.4x and 1.4x respectively, for our set of experiments. Finally, we present a case study of a real-world example via an HLS-based Google PageRank algorithm, whose performance improves by 4.4x via lock-free streaming and work-stealing.Open Acces

    Using Program Synthesis for Program Analysis

    In this paper, we identify a fragment of second-order logic with restricted quantification that is expressive enough to capture numerous static analysis problems (e.g. safety proving, bug finding, termination and non-termination proving, superoptimisation). We call this fragment the {\it synthesis fragment}. Satisfiability of a formula in the synthesis fragment is decidable over finite domains; specifically the decision problem is NEXPTIME-complete. If a formula in this fragment is satisfiable, a solution consists of a satisfying assignment from the second order variables to \emph{functions over finite domains}. To concretely find these solutions, we synthesise \emph{programs} that compute the functions. Our program synthesis algorithm is complete for finite state programs, i.e. every \emph{function} over finite domains is computed by some \emph{program} that we can synthesise. We can therefore use our synthesiser as a decision procedure for the synthesis fragment of second-order logic, which in turn allows us to use it as a powerful backend for many program analysis tasks.     Synthesis of Parametric Programs using Genetic Programming and Model Checking

    Formal methods apply algorithms based on mathematical principles to enhance the reliability of systems. It would only be natural to try to progress from verification, model checking or testing a system against its formal specification into constructing it automatically. Classical algorithmic synthesis theory provides interesting algorithms but also alarming high complexity and undecidability results. The use of genetic programming, in combination with model checking and testing, provides a powerful heuristic to synthesize programs. The method is not completely automatic, as it is fine tuned by a user that sets up the specification and parameters. It also does not guarantee to always succeed and converge towards a solution that satisfies all the required properties. However, we applied it successfully on quite nontrivial examples and managed to find solutions to hard programming challenges, as well as to improve and to correct code.
