The Implementation of Emi (English Medium Instruction) in Indonesian Universities: Its Opportunities, Its Threats, Its Problems, and Its Possible Solutions
In this paper, I attempt to find out whether EMI (English Medium Instruction) can be an effective means of enhancing students\u27 and teachers\u27 language proficiency at university (bilingualism) and whether bilingualism necessarily leads to biliteracy. In addition, I would like to propose a model on which a smooth transition to a full EMI implementation can be achieved, should it be adopted. From literature reviews, I conclude that EMI (using English to teach content subjects) can be a better means of solving learners\u27 language problems than teaching English as a subject, because it allows learners more exposure to the language (comprehensible input) and more opportunity to use it (comprehensible output). However, due to its classroom-based nature, EMI is not likely to develop the four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, & writing) equally for both students and teachers. On the other hand, the assumption that EMI will automatically result in biliteracy is unsupported, because only bilinguals competent in both languages can take a full advantage of their bilingualism. Students or teachers who are not adequately developed in the language are likely to suffer academically, socially, and psychologically instead.
Since research has found that total/full immersion is not the right method for language-incompetent students, the writer believes that both a bridging program and a partial EMI program are necessary at least at the initial stage of EMI implementation. The bridging program should be based on students\u27 and teachers\u27 academic and linguistic needs (EAP); the partial EMI program may be based on limitations on three factors: the participants, the scope of use, and the settings. Finally, in order for the program to run smoothly, mixed-mode teaching in the classroom should be discouraged and a conducive atmosphere for second language acquisition should be established both in the classroom and outside the classroo
A Low-Overhead Script Language for Tiny Networked Embedded Systems
With sensor networks starting to get mainstream acceptance, programmability is of increasing importance.
Customers and field engineers will need to reprogram existing deployments and software developers
will need to test and debug software in network testbeds. Script languages, which are a popular
mechanism for reprogramming in general-purpose computing, have not been considered for wireless sensor
networks because of the perceived overhead of interpreting a script language on tiny sensor nodes.
In this paper we show that a structured script language is both feasible and efficient for programming
tiny sensor nodes. We present a structured script language, SCript, and develop an interpreter for the
language. To reduce program distribution energy the SCript interpreter stores a tokenized representation
of the scripts which is distributed through the wireless network. The ROM and RAM footprint of the
interpreter is similar to that of existing virtual machines for sensor networks. We show that the interpretation
overhead of our language is on par with that of existing virtual machines. Thus script languages,
previously considered as too expensive for tiny sensor nodes, are a viable alternative to virtual machines

The requirements are identified for a very high order natural language to be used by crew members on board the Space Station. The hardware facilities, databases, realtime processes, and software support are discussed. The operations and capabilities that will be required in both normal (routine) and abnormal (nonroutine) situations are evaluated. A structure and syntax for an interface (front-end) language to satisfy the above requirements are recommended
Aquaculture research: technology transfer for rural development in Nigeria
Conventional aquaculture has been promoted in Nigeria for the past five decades with minimal impact on rural communities: from the findings of Maclearen (1949) where he popularized the use of culturable fish predators Lutjanus sp; Pomades sp; Tarpon adanticus; Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus in earthen ponds near Onikan-Lagos, Nigeria; to the finding of Zwilling, 1963, who reported common carp, Cyprinus carpio propagation and culture in Panyan Fish Farm, near Jos; to the findings of FAO, 1965, when the potential culture of marine mullets culture in brackish water ponds in Buguma, Rivers State was presented. The work of other researchers Sivalingam, (1970; 1973), Ezenwa (1976), development officers and extension officers contributed to the development of aquaculture in few rural areas of the country and informed on public and private owned fish farm infrastructures. Despite a moderate long history of aquaculture research and development in Nigeria, an annual production level of 25,000 metric tons was recorded in 1999. This situation calls for a more sustainable approach for a stronger link between aquaculture research and technology transfer for the development of rural communities of Nigeria. The Usage of Personal Data as Content in Integrated Marketing Communications
Personal user data has proven extremely valuable for firms in the digital age. The wealth of data available to firms has provided unprecedented access into the world of the consumer. Companies hoping to capitalize on their user's data have turned to several interesting outlets. This research addresses the repurposing of user data as content in marketing. By analyzing four cases of data presented as marketing communications across two companies, this research provides new insights into the public release of private user data for marketing purposes. Four cases of personal data used in marketing communications were chosen specifically for their time proximity, characteristics of the sending firms, and their disparate outcomes. These instances of marketing communications, two by Spotify and two by Netflix, were released during November and December of 2017 and each resulted in a diverse range of public opinion. An analysis of these cases was conducted using the comprehensive framework of integrated marketing communications (Tafesse & Kitchen, 2017). There is a significant difference in the perceptual outcomes of integrated marketing communication campaigns which display user data as content. This analysis provides insights into the characteristics of marketing communications and how their outcomes fit into broader marketing strategies. These case studies provide opportunities for marketers to improve their campaigns in line with their desired audience outcome. Formulating Consciousness: A Comparative Analysis of Searle’s and Dennett’s Theory of Consciousness
This research will argue about which theory of mind between
Searle’s and Dennett’s can better explain human consciousness. Initially,
distinctions between dualism and materialism will be discussed ranging from
substance dualism, property dualism, physicalism, and functionalism. In this
part, the main issue that is tackled in various theories of mind is revealed. It
is the missing connection between input stimulus (neuronal reactions) and
behavioral disposition: consciousness. Then, the discussion will be more
specific on Searle’s biological naturalism and Dennett’s multiple drafts
model as the two attempted to answer the issue. The differences between
them will be highlighted and will be analyzed according to their relation to
their roots: dualism and materialism. The two theories will be examined on
how each answer the questions on consciousness
Distance learning of foreign languages
doi: 10.1017/S0261444806003727This article provides a critical overview of the field of distance language learning, challenging the way in which the field is often narrowly conceptualised as the development of technology-mediated language learning opportunities. Early sections focus on issues of concept and definition and both theoretical and pedagogical perspectives on the field. Emphasis is placed on evident shifts from a concern with structural and organisational issues to a focus on transactional issues associated with teaching/learning opportunities within emerging paradigms for distance language learning. The next section reviews choices and challenges in incorporating technology into distance language learning environments, foregrounding decisions about technology made in particular sociocultural contexts, the contribution of ‘low-end’ technologies and research directions in developing new learning spaces and in using online technologies. The investigation of learner contributions to distance language learning is an important avenue of enquiry in the field, given the preoccupation with technology and virtual learning environments, and this is the subject of section six. The two final sections identify future research directions and provide a series of conclusions about research and practice in distance language learning as technology-mediated interactions increasingly come to influence the way we think about the processes of language learning and teaching
