    Tools for Real-Time Control Systems Co-Design : A Survey

    This report presents a survey of current simulation tools in the area of integrated control and real-time systems design. Each tool is presented with a quick overview followed by a more detailed section describing comparative aspects of the tool. These aspects describe the context and purpose of the tool (scenarios, development stages, activities, and qualities/constraints being addressed) and the actual tool technology (tool architecture, inputs, outputs, modeling content, extensibility and availability). The tools presented in the survey are the following; Jitterbug and TrueTime from the Department of Automatic Control at Lund University, Sweden, AIDA and XILO from the Department of Machine Design at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, Ptolemy II from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at Berkeley, California, RTSIM from the RETIS Laboratory, Pisa, Italy, and Syndex and Orccad from INRIA, France. The survey also briefly describes some existing commercial tools related to the area of real-time control systems

    IDEA '15 held at HiPEAC 2015, Amsterdam, The Netherlands on January 21st, 2015 is the rst workshop on Investigating Data ow in Embedded computing Architectures. This technical report comprises of the proceedings of IDEA '15. Over the years, data ow has been gaining popularity among Embedded Systems researchers around Europe and the world. However, research on data ow is limited to small pockets in dierent communities without a common forum for discussion. The goal of the workshop was to provide a platform to researchers and practitioners to present work on modelling and analysis of present and future high performance embedded computing architectures using data ow. Despite being the rst edition of the workshop, it was very pleasant to see a total of 14 submissions, out of which 6 papers were selected following a thorough reviewing process. All the papers were reviewed by at least 5 reviewers. This workshop could not have become a reality without the help of a Technical Program Committee (TPC). The TPC members not only did the hard work to give helpful reviews in time, but also participated in extensive discussion following the reviewing process, leading to an excellent workshop program and very valuable feedback to authors. Likewise, the Organisation Committee also deserves acknowledgment to make this workshop a successful event. We take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed in making this workshop a success

    Conformance Testing as Falsification for Cyber-Physical Systems

    In Model-Based Design of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), it is often desirable to develop several models of varying fidelity. Models of different fidelity levels can enable mathematical analysis of the model, control synthesis, faster simulation etc. Furthermore, when (automatically or manually) transitioning from a model to its implementation on an actual computational platform, then again two different versions of the same system are being developed. In all previous cases, it is necessary to define a rigorous notion of conformance between different models and between models and their implementations. This paper argues that conformance should be a measure of distance between systems. Albeit a range of theoretical distance notions exists, a way to compute such distances for industrial size systems and models has not been proposed yet. This paper addresses exactly this problem. A universal notion of conformance as closeness between systems is rigorously defined, and evidence is presented that this implies a number of other application-dependent conformance notions. An algorithm for detecting that two systems are not conformant is then proposed, which uses existing proven tools. A method is also proposed to measure the degree of conformance between two systems.     NON-LINEAR MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR PROCESS PLANTS USING SOFT COMPUTING APPROACHES

    The developments of advanced non-linear control strategies have attracted a considerable research interests over the past decades especially in process control. Rather than an absolute reliance on mathematical models of process plants which often brings discrepancies especially owing to design errors and equipment degradation, non-linear models are however required because they provide improved prediction capabilities but they are very difficult to derive. In addition, the derivation of the global optimal solution gets more difficult especially when multivariable and non-linear systems are involved. Hence, this research investigates soft computing techniques for the implementation of a novel real time constrained non-linear model predictive controller (NMPC). The time-frequency localisation characteristics of wavelet neural network (WNN) were utilised for the non-linear models design using system identification approach from experimental data and improve upon the conventional artificial neural network (ANN) which is prone to low convergence rate and the difficulties in locating the global minimum point during training process. Salient features of particle swarm optimisation and a genetic algorithm (GA) were combined to optimise the network weights. Real time optimisation occurring at every sampling instant is achieved using a GA to deliver results both in simulations and real time implementation on coupled tank systems with further extension to a complex quadruple tank process in simulations. The results show the superiority of the novel WNN-NMPC approach in terms of the average controller energy and mean squared error over the conventional ANN-NMPC strategies and PID control strategy for both SISO and MIMO systemsPetroleum Training Development Fun
