Synthesis of a simple self-stabilizing system
With the increasing importance of distributed systems as a computing
paradigm, a systematic approach to their design is needed. Although the area of
formal verification has made enormous advances towards this goal, the resulting
functionalities are limited to detecting problems in a particular design. By
means of a classical example, we illustrate a simple template-based approach to
computer-aided design of distributed systems based on leveraging the well-known

Distinguishing sequences for partially specified FSMs
Distinguishing Sequences (DSs) are used inmany Finite State Machine (FSM) based test techniques. Although Partially Specified FSMs (PSFSMs) generalise FSMs, the computational complexity of constructing Adaptive and Preset DSs (ADSs/PDSs) for PSFSMs has not been addressed. This paper shows that it is possible to check the existence of an ADS in polynomial time but the corresponding problem for PDSs is PSPACE-complete. We also report on the results of experiments with benchmarks and over 8 * 106 PSFSMs. © 2014 Springer International Publishing

Explicit connection actions in multiparty session types
This work extends asynchronous multiparty session types (MPST) with explicit connection actions to support protocols with op- tional and dynamic participants. The actions by which endpoints are connected and disconnected are a key element of real-world protocols that is not treated in existing MPST works. In addition, the use cases motivating explicit connections often require a more relaxed form of mul- tiparty choice: these extensions do not satisfy the conservative restric- tions used to ensure safety in standard syntactic MPST. Instead, we de- velop a modelling-based approach to validate MPST safety and progress for these enriched protocols. We present a toolchain implementation, for distributed programming based on our extended MPST in Java, and a core formalism, demonstrating the soundness of our approach. We discuss key implementation issues related to the proposed extensions: a practi- cal treatment of choice subtyping for MPST progress, and multiparty correlation of dynamic binary connections

Multiparty compatibility in communicating automata: characterisation and synthesis of global session types
Multiparty session types are a type system that can ensure the safety and liveness of distributed peers via the global specification of their interactions. To construct a global specification from a set of distributed uncontrolled behaviours, this paper explores the problem of fully characterising multiparty session types in terms of communicating automata. We equip global and local session types with labelled transition systems (LTSs) that faithfully represent asynchronous communications through unbounded buffered channels. Using the equivalence between the two LTSs, we identify a class of communicating automata that exactly correspond to the projected local types. We exhibit an algorithm to synthesise a global type from a collection of communicating automata. The key property of our findings is the notion of multiparty compatibility which non-trivially extends the duality condition for binary session types
Learning-Based Synthesis of Safety Controllers
We propose a machine learning framework to synthesize reactive controllers
for systems whose interactions with their adversarial environment are modeled
by infinite-duration, two-player games over (potentially) infinite graphs. Our
framework targets safety games with infinitely many vertices, but it is also
applicable to safety games over finite graphs whose size is too prohibitive for
conventional synthesis techniques. The learning takes place in a feedback loop
between a teacher component, which can reason symbolically about the safety
game, and a learning algorithm, which successively learns an overapproximation
of the winning region from various kinds of examples provided by the teacher.
We develop a novel decision tree learning algorithm for this setting and show
that our algorithm is guaranteed to converge to a reactive safety controller if
a suitable overapproximation of the winning region can be expressed as a
decision tree. Finally, we empirically compare the performance of a prototype
implementation to existing approaches, which are based on constraint solving
and automata learning, respectively
