Multi-dimensional Type Theory: Rules, Categories, and Combinators for Syntax and Semantics
We investigate the possibility of modelling the syntax and semantics of
natural language by constraints, or rules, imposed by the multi-dimensional
type theory Nabla. The only multiplicity we explicitly consider is two, namely
one dimension for the syntax and one dimension for the semantics, but the
general perspective is important. For example, issues of pragmatics could be
handled as additional dimensions.
One of the main problems addressed is the rather complicated repertoire of
operations that exists besides the notion of categories in traditional Montague
grammar. For the syntax we use a categorial grammar along the lines of Lambek.
For the semantics we use so-called lexical and logical combinators inspired by
work in natural logic. Nabla provides a concise interpretation and a sequent
calculus as the basis for implementations.Comment: 20 page
Logophors: looking outside of syntax. Evidence from real-time sentence comprehension
This paper capitalizes on psycholinguistic evidence from real-time sentence comprehension to choose between two opposing positions on reflexivity: The syntax-only field on the one hand, and the syntax+discourse field on the other hand. The study presented here utilized a cross-modal paradigm to measure the amount of processing resources required for interpretation. The obtained data are in favor of a syntax+discourse approach to reflexivity, thus suggesting that logophoricity goes beyond syntax. The data reveal a significant contrast between so-called coargument reflexives (whose interpretation is purely syntactic) and logophoric reflexives (implying that their interpretation requires access to syntactic and non-syntactic information)

The past decade of reseatch in Natural Language Processing has universally recognized that, since natural language input is almost always ambiguous with respect to its pragmatic implications, its syntactic parse, and even its lexical analysis (i.e., choice of correct word-sense for an ambiguous word), processing natural language input requires decisions about word meanings, syntactic structure, and pragmatic inferences. The lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic levels of inferencing are not as disparate as they have often been treated in both psychological and artificial intelligence research. In fact, these three levels of analysis interact to form a joint interpretation of text.ATLAST (A Three-level Language Analysis SysTem) is an implemented integration of human language understanding at the lexical, the syntactic, and the pragmatic levels. For psychological validity, ATLAST is based on results of experiments with human subjects. The ATLAST model uses a new architecture which was developed to incorporate three features: spreading activation memory, two-stage syntax, and parallel processing of syntax and semantics. It is also a new framework within which to interpret and tackle unsolved problems through implementation and experimentation
