An analysis of the application of AI to the development of intelligent aids for flight crew tasks
This report presents the results of a study aimed at developing a basis for applying artificial intelligence to the flight deck environment of commercial transport aircraft. In particular, the study was comprised of four tasks: (1) analysis of flight crew tasks, (2) survey of the state-of-the-art of relevant artificial intelligence areas, (3) identification of human factors issues relevant to intelligent cockpit aids, and (4) identification of artificial intelligence areas requiring further research
Will this work for Susan? Challenges for delivering usable and useful generic linked data browsers
While we witness an explosion of exploration tools for simple datasets on Web 2.0 designed for use by ordinary citizens, the goal of a usable interface for supporting navigation and sense-making over arbitrary linked data has remained elusive. The purpose of this paper is to analyse why - what makes exploring linked data so hard? Through a user-centered use case scenario, we work through requirements for sense making with data to extract functional requirements and to compare these against our tools to see what challenges emerge to deliver a useful, usable knowledge building experience with linked data. We present presentation layer and heterogeneous data integration challenges and offer practical considerations for moving forward to effective linked data sensemaking tools
A Time-Triggered Constraint-Based Calculus for Avionic Systems
The Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architec- ture and the Time-Triggered
Ethernet (TTEthernet) network have emerged as the key components of a typical
architecture model for recent civil aircrafts. We propose a real-time
constraint-based calculus targeted at the analysis of such concepts of avionic
embedded systems. We show our framework at work on the modelisation of both the
(IMA) architecture and the TTEthernet network, illustrating their behavior by
the well-known Flight Management System (FMS)
Transdisciplinarity seen through Information, Communication, Computation, (Inter-)Action and Cognition
Similar to oil that acted as a basic raw material and key driving force of
industrial society, information acts as a raw material and principal mover of
knowledge society in the knowledge production, propagation and application. New
developments in information processing and information communication
technologies allow increasingly complex and accurate descriptions,
representations and models, which are often multi-parameter, multi-perspective,
multi-level and multidimensional. This leads to the necessity of collaborative
work between different domains with corresponding specialist competences,
sciences and research traditions. We present several major transdisciplinary
unification projects for information and knowledge, which proceed on the
descriptive, logical and the level of generative mechanisms. Parallel process
of boundary crossing and transdisciplinary activity is going on in the applied
domains. Technological artifacts are becoming increasingly complex and their
design is strongly user-centered, which brings in not only the function and
various technological qualities but also other aspects including esthetic, user
experience, ethics and sustainability with social and environmental dimensions.
When integrating knowledge from a variety of fields, with contributions from
different groups of stakeholders, numerous challenges are met in establishing
common view and common course of action. In this context, information is our
environment, and informational ecology determines both epistemology and spaces
for action. We present some insights into the current state of the art of
transdisciplinary theory and practice of information studies and informatics.
We depict different facets of transdisciplinarity as we see it from our
different research fields that include information studies, computability,
human-computer interaction, multi-operating-systems environments and

ChimpCheck: Property-Based Randomized Test Generation for Interactive Apps
We consider the problem of generating relevant execution traces to test rich
interactive applications. Rich interactive applications, such as apps on mobile
platforms, are complex stateful and often distributed systems where
sufficiently exercising the app with user-interaction (UI) event sequences to
expose defects is both hard and time-consuming. In particular, there is a
fundamental tension between brute-force random UI exercising tools, which are
fully-automated but offer low relevance, and UI test scripts, which are manual
but offer high relevance. In this paper, we consider a middle way---enabling a
seamless fusion of scripted and randomized UI testing. This fusion is
prototyped in a testing tool called ChimpCheck for programming, generating, and
executing property-based randomized test cases for Android apps. Our approach
realizes this fusion by offering a high-level, embedded domain-specific
language for defining custom generators of simulated user-interaction event
sequences. What follows is a combinator library built on industrial strength
frameworks for property-based testing (ScalaCheck) and Android testing (Android
JUnit and Espresso) to implement property-based randomized testing for Android
development. Driven by real, reported issues in open source Android apps, we
show, through case studies, how ChimpCheck enables expressing effective testing
