The article advances a novel methodological approach to the study of language development, namely a diachronic synergetics. The purpose of the present research is, through disclosing synergetic features of the phonetic system, to reveal heuristic potency and applicability of principles of the synergetic paradigm to language studies. The authors claim that the phonetic system of language possesses synergetic features and it changes according to common principles of development of complex systems. The authors prove that changes in the phonetic system are neither chaotic nor random, since they are preconditioned by the features of the system itself. The theoretical significance of the present research lies in the widening of our knowledge of language as a synergetic system, and of synergetic features of the phonetic system of English, in particular. The obtained data can be fully employed practically into lectures and seminars on the history of English, theoretical phonetics, and historical linguistics. The linguistic view of the universe and the issue of the participation of the human factor in it are analyzed using philosophical categories of the theory of knowledge, as in the process of studying all other phenomena. The synergetic methodology, which has entered the science as a new approach to the process of understanding the world, also incorporates important aspects of these principles. Synergetics is also recognized as one of the most effective directions recognized in all areas at the current stage of scientific development. This article analyzes that the synergetic methodology can also be the basis for the study of linguistic problems as a methodology that can provide an in-depth analysis of the substantive essence of the object. It is also argued that the study of the phenomena of linguistic levels as a whole system on the basis of a synergetic paradigm is a prospective methodology of modern linguistics. Keywords: Methodology, method, synergetics, synergetic methodology, synergetic principle, attractor, instability, theory of knowledge, bifurcation, homeostatis, dialectics, dynamic hierarchy, dissipative structure, hierarchy, competition, cooperation, observability, nonlinearity, linguistic view of the universe, transparency, trajectory, philosophical category, fluctuation, emergenc

The relation between dependency distance and frequency

    Get PDF
International audienceThis present pilot study investigates the relationship between dependency distance and frequency based on the analysis of an English dependency treebank. The preliminary result shows that there is a non-linear relation between dependency distance and frequency. This relation between them can be further formalized as a power law function which can be used to predict the distribution of dependency distance in a treebank

This article encompasses a comprehensive consideration of the concept of EMPATHY (lexicalized by the word empathy) in modern English discourse. Therefore, the aim of the research is twofold: a) to gain an understanding of how EMPATHY (as a dynamic cognitive model) is used by speakers, i.e., its nature and scope; b) to introduce the idea of the self-organization of three conceptual dimensions of EMPATHY: logical, identifying, and structural

Стаття сприяє вивченню лінгвосинергетичного підходу та теорії фракталів і пропонує новий погляд на функціонування та динаміку концепту «DEATH».The article discusses the functioning of a concept from a linguosynergetic perspective as a spontaneous equipment of the structure of a homeostatic hierarchical complex organized as an open nonlinear system. The research is aimed to investigate the DEATH concept functioning from a linguosynergetic perspective and develop a model for understanding the synergistic interplay of linguistic and contextual factors in the conceptualization of death. To develop the main research hypothesis, general scientific methods like analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, abstraction, explanation, and description are used. This system is characterized as an open one because it constantly interacts with the external world and is nonlinear, meaning that it has various options for development at the bifurcation point, but only one is chosen. This continuous process of structuring is known as emergence, which means the concept can adapt to new meanings based on the realities of the world around it. Emergence is a result of the self organizing mechanism, where the system is reorganized and spontaneously equipped with elements that allow it to move to a new level of operation, while maintaining balance by outputting information from the system’s boundaries. However, the system is also influenced by external factors, which can cause conflict and lead to further reorganization. As a result, the emergence process is ongoing and dynamic, with the structure being both a consequence and a cause of the system`s development. Thus, the principle of self-organization, which is the key concept of synergetics, is founded on the notion of instability. In essence, self-organization refers to the spontaneous emergence of order in a system, which results from the interactions and interrelationships between the system`s components. As such, the concept of self-organization is closely linked to the idea of nonlinearity, which posits that small changes in the system`s components can lead to significant changes in the system`s behavior as a whole. In other words, the behavior of the system as a whole is not simply a sum of the behaviors of its individual components, but is instead an emergent property that arises from the complex interactions between those components. The formation of a new system is not merely a sum of its individual parts. This is, due to the way in which the components of the system connect with one another, a phenomenon known as coherence. Coherence acts as a means to coordinate the various components of the system so that they work together in harmony, rather than independently. Additionally, the system`s components change at different rates and are of varying quality. This process is responsible for the system`s evolutionary nature and reinforces the principle of evolutionary holism in synergetics. This principle is concerned with understanding the mechanisms by which the system`s components come together to form a whole. In summary, the concept is formed in the human mind through a collection of thoughts, which can take on various forms such as lexical and semantic fields, modes, frames, and emotions. The specific form the concept takes depends on the level at which the bifurcation point impacts the fluctuation of the conceptual structure and discursive environment. Essentially, the concept arises from a system that is in an unstable state and is subject to fluctuations that threaten its structure. When the system reaches the bifurcation point, the individual selects one of the possible models for the concept`s development, and this results in a transition from “chaos” to “order” as the concept gains verbal representation

A Dynamic Approach to Rhythm in Language: Toward a Temporal Phonology

It is proposed that the theory of dynamical systems offers appropriate tools to model many phonological aspects of both speech production and perception. A dynamic account of speech rhythm is shown to be useful for description of both Japanese mora timing and English timing in a phrase repetition task. This orientation contrasts fundamentally with the more familiar symbolic approach to phonology, in which time is modeled only with sequentially arrayed symbols. It is proposed that an adaptive oscillator offers a useful model for perceptual entrainment (or `locking in') to the temporal patterns of speech production. This helps to explain why speech is often perceived to be more regular than experimental measurements seem to justify. Because dynamic models deal with real time, they also help us understand how languages can differ in their temporal detail---contributing to foreign accents, for example. The fact that languages differ greatly in their temporal detail suggests that these effects are not mere motor universals, but that dynamical models are intrinsic components of the phonological characterization of language.Comment: 31 pages; compressed, uuencoded Postscrip
