    New synchronization criteria for an array of neural networks with hybrid coupling and time-varying delays

    This paper is concerned with the global exponential synchronization for an array of hybrid coupled neural networks with time-varying leakage delay, discrete and distributed delays. Applying a novel Lyapunov functional and the property of outer coupling matrices of the neural networks, sufficient conditions are obtained for the global exponential synchronization of the system. The derived synchronization criteria are closely related with the time-varying delays and the coupling structure of the networks. The maximal allowable upper bounds of the time-varying delays can be obtained guaranteeing the global synchronization for the neural networks. The method we adopt in this paper is different from the commonly used linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, and our synchronization conditions are new, which are easy to check in comparison with the previously reported LMI-based ones. Some examples are given to show the effectiveness of the obtained theoretical results

    Dynamical principles in neuroscience

    Dynamical modeling of neural systems and brain functions has a history of success over the last half century. This includes, for example, the explanation and prediction of some features of neural rhythmic behaviors. Many interesting dynamical models of learning and memory based on physiological experiments have been suggested over the last two decades. Dynamical models even of consciousness now exist. Usually these models and results are based on traditional approaches and paradigms of nonlinear dynamics including dynamical chaos. Neural systems are, however, an unusual subject for nonlinear dynamics for several reasons: (i) Even the simplest neural network, with only a few neurons and synaptic connections, has an enormous number of variables and control parameters. These make neural systems adaptive and flexible, and are critical to their biological function. (ii) In contrast to traditional physical systems described by well-known basic principles, first principles governing the dynamics of neural systems are unknown. (iii) Many different neural systems exhibit similar dynamics despite having different architectures and different levels of complexity. (iv) The network architecture and connection strengths are usually not known in detail and therefore the dynamical analysis must, in some sense, be probabilistic. (v) Since nervous systems are able to organize behavior based on sensory inputs, the dynamical modeling of these systems has to explain the transformation of temporal information into combinatorial or combinatorial-temporal codes, and vice versa, for memory and recognition.     The Stability and Control of Stochastically Switching Dynamical Systems

    Inherent randomness and unpredictability is an underlying property in most realistic phenomena. In this work, we present a new framework for introducing stochasticity into dynamical systems via intermittently switching between deterministic regimes. Extending the work by Belykh, Belykh, and Hasler, we provide analytical insight into how randomly switching network topologies behave with respect to their averaged, static counterparts (obtained by replacing the stochastic variables with their expectation) when switching is fast. Beyond fast switching, we uncover a highly nontrivial phenomenon by which a network can switch between two asynchronous regimes and synchronize against all odds. Then, we establish rigorous theory for this framework in discrete-time systems for arbitrary switching periods (not limited to switching at each time step). Using stability and ergodic theories, we are able to provide analytical criteria for the stability of synchronization for two coupled maps and the ability of a single map to control an arbitrary network of maps. This work not only presents new phenomena in stochastically switching dynamical systems, but also provides the first rigorous analysis of switching dynamical systems with an arbitrary switching period

    In Vitro Development of Human iPSC-Derived Functional Neuronal Networks on Laser-Fabricated 3D Scaffolds

    Neural progenitor cells generated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are the forefront of ″brain-on-chip″ investigations. Viable and functional hiPSC-derived neuronal networks are shaping powerful in vitro models for evaluating the normal and abnormal formation of cortical circuits, understanding the underlying disease mechanisms, and investigating the response to drugs. They therefore represent a desirable instrument for both the scientific community and the pharmacological industry. However, culture conditions required for the full functional maturation of individual neurons and networks are still unidentified. It has been recognized that three-dimensional (3D) culture conditions can better emulate in vivo neuronal tissue development compared to 2D cultures and thus provide a more desirable in vitro approach. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a 3D scaffold platform that supports and promotes intricate neuronal network development. 3D scaffolds were produced through direct laser writing by two-photon polymerization (2PP), a high-resolution 3D laser microstructuring technology, using the biocompatible and nondegradable photoreactive resin Dental LT Clear (DClear). Neurons developed and interconnected on a 3D environment shaped by vertically stacked scaffold layers. The developed networks could support different cell types. Starting at the day 50 of 3D culture, neuronal progenitor cells could develop into cortical projection neurons (CNPs) of all six layers, different types of inhibitory neurons, and glia. Additionally and in contrast to 2D conditions, 3D scaffolds supported the long-term culturing of neuronal networks over the course of 120 days. Network health and functionality were probed through calcium imaging, which revealed a strong spontaneous neuronal activity that combined individual and collective events. Taken together, our results highlight advanced microstructured 3D scaffolds as a reliable platform for the 3D in vitro modeling of neuronal functions.publishedVersio

    Application of Synchronization to Formation Flying Spacecraft: Lagrangian Approach

    This paper presents a unified synchronization framework with application to precision formation flying spacecraft. Central to the proposed innovation, in applying synchronization to both translational and rotational dynamics in the Lagrangian form, is the use of the distributed stability and performance analysis tool, called contraction analysis that yields exact nonlinear stability proofs. The proposed decentralized tracking control law synchronizes the attitude of an arbitrary number of spacecraft into a common time-varying trajectory with global exponential convergence. Moreover, a decentralized translational tracking control law based on oscillator phase synchronization is presented, thus enabling coupled translational and rotational maneuvers. Although the translational dynamics can be adequately controlled by linear control laws, the proposed method permits highly nonlinear systems with nonlinearly coupled inertia matrices such as the attitude dynamics of spacecraft whose large and rapid slew maneuvers justify the nonlinear control approach.     Mathematical modelling and brain dynamical networks

    In this thesis, we study the dynamics of the Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) model which studies the spike-bursting behaviour of the membrane potential of a single neuron. We study the stability of the HR system and compute its Lyapunov exponents (LEs). We consider coupled general sections of the HR system to create an undirected brain dynamical network (BDN) of Nn neurons. Then, we study the concepts of upper bound of mutual information rate (MIR) and synchronisation measure and their dependence on the values of electrical and chemical couplings. We analyse the dynamics of neurons in various regions of parameter space plots for two elementary examples of 3 neurons with two different types of electrical and chemical couplings. We plot the upper bound Ic and the order parameter rho (the measure of synchronisation) and the two largest Lyapunov exponents LE1 and LE2 versus the chemical coupling gn and electrical coupling gl. We show that, even for small number of neurons, the dynamics of the system depends on the number of neurons and the type of coupling strength between them. Finally, we evolve a network of Hindmarsh-Rose neurons by increasing the entropy of the system. In particular, we choose the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy: HKS (Pesin identity) as the evolution rule. First, we compute the HKS for a network of 4 HR neurons connected simultaneously by two undirected electrical and two undirected chemical links. We get different entropies with the use of different values for both the chemical and electrical couplings. If the entropy of the system is positive, the dynamics of the system is chaotic and if it is close to zero, the trajectory of the system converges to one of the fixed points and loses energy. Then, we evolve a network of 6 clusters of 10 neurons each. Neurons in each cluster are connected only by electrical links and their connections form small-world networks. The six clusters connect to each other only by chemical links. We compare between the combined effect of chemical and electrical couplings with the two concepts, the information flow capacity Ic and HKS in evolving the BDNs and show results that the brain networks might evolve based on the principle of the maximisation of their entropies
