Adaptive Vectorial Filter for Grid Synchronization of Power Converters Under Unbalanced and/or Distorted Grid Conditions

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new synchronization scheme for detecting multiple positive-/negative-sequence frequency harmonics in three-phase systems for grid-connected power converters. The proposed technique is called MAVF-FLL because it is based on the use of multiple adaptive vectorial filters (AVFs) working together inside a harmonic decoupling network, resting on a frequency-locked loop (FLL) which makes the system frequency adaptive. The method uses the vectorial properties of the three-phase input signal in the αβ reference frame in order to obtain the different harmonic components. The MAVF-FLL is fully designed and analyzed, addressing the tuning procedure in order to obtain the desired and predefined performance. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by both simulation and experimental results, demonstrating its ability to perform as required for detecting different harmonic components under a highly unbalanced and distorted input grid voltage

Low-pass filtering or gain tuning free simple DC offset rejection technique for single and three-phase systems

This paper aims to address the DC offset rejection problem in grid synchronization algorithm. A simple approach to estimate the unknown grid frequency in the presence of DC offset is proposed for this purpose. Some of the existing techniques available in the literature use either low-pass filter or an additional integrator to eliminate the DC offset. Both approaches require an additional parameter to tune. However, tuning the additional parameter is not straightforward. Moreover, tuning the overall system can be complicated due to the presence of DC offset rejection part. The proposed approach does not require any additional parameter to tune. By considering the orthogonal signal instead of the DC offset as an additional state, the proposed technique can efficiently estimate the unknown frequency of the grid. Application to both single and three-phase grids are provided. Comparative experimental results with DC offset rejection capable second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) phase-locked loop (PLL) (SOGI-PLL) demonstrate the effectiveness and suitability of the proposed technique

This paper presents a novel current control methodology for grid connected doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind energy conversion systems. Controller is based on a proportional controller with additional first order low pass filter disturbance observer which estimates the parameter dependent nonlinear feed-forward terms. The results in simulations and experimental test bed obviously demonstrate that decoupled control of active and reactive power is achieved without the necessity of additional machine parameter

Grid Voltage Synchronization for Unbalanced Voltages Using the Energy Operator

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel synchronization technique which can identify the grid voltage frequency and phase angle under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The method combines the features of two different energy operator schemes: the basic one for estimating the frequency of the grid voltages and the cross-energy operator for phase tracking. Using a moving data window of five samples the algorithm can track the fundamental frequency and phase angle quickly and accurately. The paper discusses the fundamental principles of the method, highlights its features and filter requirements in implementation. An experimental implementation of this method is presented which validates its performance for practical operation. The ability of the proposed method to enable a STATCOM riding-through unbalanced grid voltage condition is verified by the results from a power network simulation study

DSOGI-PLL based power control method to mitigate control errors under disturbances of grid connected hybrid renewable power systems

    Get PDF
The control of power converter devices is one of the main research lines in interfaced renewable energy sources, such as solar cells and wind turbines. Therefore, suitable control algorithms should be designed in order to regulate power or current properly and attain a good power quality for some disturbances, such as voltage sag/swell, voltage unbalances and fluctuations, long interruptions, and harmonics. Various synchronisation techniques based control strategies are implemented for the hybrid power system applications under unbalanced conditions in literature studies. In this paper, synchronisation algorithms based Proportional-Resonant (PR) power/current controller is applied to the hybrid power system (solar cell + wind turbine + grid), and Dual Second Order Generalized Integrator-Phase Locked Loop (DSOGI-PLL) based PR controller in stationary reference frame provides a solution to overcome these problems. The influence of various cases, such as unbalance, and harmonic conditions, is examined, analysed and compared to the PR controllers based on DSOGI-PLL and SRF-PLL. The results verify the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed DSOGI-PLL based power control method

Frequency Adaptive Parameter Estimation of Unbalanced and Distorted Power Grid

    Get PDF
Grid synchronization plays an important role in the grid integration of renewable energy sources. To achieve grid synchronization, accurate information of the grid voltage signal parameters are needed. Motivated by this important practical application, this paper proposes a state observer-based approach for the parameter estimation of unbalanced three-phase grid voltage signal. The proposed technique can extract the frequency of the distorted grid voltage signal and is able to quantify the grid unbalances. First, a dynamical model of the grid voltage signal is developed considering the disturbances. In the model, frequency of the grid is considered as a constant and/or slowly-varying but unknown quantity. Based on the developed dynamical model, a state observer is proposed. Then using Lyapunov function-based approach, a frequency adaptation law is proposed. The chosen frequency adaptation law guarantees the global convergence of the estimation error dynamics and as a consequence, ensures the global asymptotic convergence of the estimated parameters in the fundamental frequency case. Gain tuning of the proposed state observer is very simple and can be done using Matlab commands. Some guidelines are also provided in this regard. Matlab/Simulink based numerical simulation results and dSPACE 1104 board-based experimental results are provided. Test results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed approach over another state-of-the art technique
