Foreword: Symposium on Forensic Expert Testimony, \u3ci\u3eDaubert\u3c/i\u3e, and Rule 702

On October 27, 2017, the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules held a Symposium to obtain input and guidance on critical matters involving the admissibility of expert testimony. The Symposium consisted of presentations and discussions by brilliant scientists, outstanding federal judges, academics with deep expertise in both evidence and science, and stellar practitioners from private and public practice. The transcript of the Symposium and the accompanying articles establish an important agenda for the Advisory Committee to tackle over the next few years

ESD Symposium Comittee Overview: Engineering Systems Research and Practice

This paper briefly introduces the field of Engineering Systems, and highlights its emergence from engineering practice and academic engineering. This paper was prepared by the ESD Symposium Committee based upon its own discussions, by an analysis of the other Internal Symposium papers, and by interactions with their authors. This paper discusses: a framework for describing the field of engineering systems, and emphasizes a three-dimensional view the challenges emerging in engineering practice that are associated with the design of complex systems the methods that address research and practice problems (most of these methods currently exist, some must be developed) principles and fundamentals of engineering systems "Engineering systems are increasing in size, scope, and complexity as a result of globalization, new technological capabilities, rising consumer expectations, and increasing social requirements. Engineering systems present difficult design problems and require different problem solving frameworks than those of the traditional engineering science paradigm: in particular, a more integrative approach in which engineering systems professionals view technological systems as part of a larger whole. Though engineering systems are very varied, they often display similar behavior. New approaches, frameworks, and theories need to be developed to understand better engineering systems behavior and design.

Public Accountability of Advisory Committees

The final paper from the symposium on public participation in Risk management discusses existing procedures for ensuring the integrity of advisory committee recommendations. It concludes that they are inadequate and argues that accountability would be better served if nonexperts were included. It also suggests that, in any event, measures need to be taken to indicate, e.g., the bases for committee conclusions

Themed issue on selected papers SEG2015: part II

This themed issue of Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment ‘SEG-2015-Part II’, presents papers selected from extended abstracts submitted to the Symposium on Energy Geotechnics (SEG-2015) held in the Civil Engineering School of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, between June 2nd and 4th, 2015. This symposium SEG-2015 was the first event organized by the Technical Committee TC308 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, which will have continuity in the next symposium SEG-2018 to be held in the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Lausanne, Switzerland). The first issue ‘SEG-2015-Part I’ appeared just before the 1st International Conference on Energy Geotechnics (ICEG-2016), which was held in Kiel (Germany) at the end of August 2016. This transcript is part of the published proceedings of a symposium convened by the American Bar Association’s Special Committee on Election Reform, which the ABA formed in 1973 and was chaired by John D. Feerick. The symposium took place at Fordham Law School on December 3, 1976. It occurred in the wake of the Watergate era, which saw the resignation of one vice president, the appointment of two vice presidents pursuant to the Twenty-Fifth Amendment’s Section 2, and a vice president’s succession to the presidency. The symposium’s purpose was to assemble experts on the vice-presidency to develop reform proposals related to the office.
